we play hardcourt on monday/thursday nights and play grass polo wednesday nights.
103 is nothing, thats like a cold front for us. it got up to 118 a week ago.

Pete didn't pay attention at the meeting, but it's hard when your entire family is there. We have plenty of indoor housing. Yes this is a one horse/three college town, but there is no 'polohaus' so there are lots of different addresses. As for the least college like house Lucky, don't hold your breathe.

actually Missouri has a law that says if the driver doesn't have alcohol on his breathe the rest in the car my imbibe the sweet sweet nectar. So feel free to get some 40's on the way in/out of town.
On the highways. Municipalities have their own laws regarding open container in vehicles..and I believe all of them say no. But yes, I suggest getting booze around STL for the ride over to CoMo.

Lexington also has a set, mostly used for an extra roller hockey rink by the parks dept., but we borrow it whenever we are able to use them downtown for polo demo's. Usually playing on the street (which makes for a very slick court btw).

Yeah, those "Border Patrol" padded rink systems work pretty well for polo. We use it for polo demonstrations here, even though we technically do not have full access to them. The ones we use belong to the Parks Dept. roller hockey program. Seems like we use 24-30 pieces to create a decent sized polo court, with 4-5 of the taller sections on the goal ends.

That 180 court is too big, in my opinion.
I really gotta measure the one we play in to get some perspective but damn, 180 is too big.
It is the city's hockey rink. It cannot be changed without jackhammers and fresh concrete. Whenever we play out there we call it the high speed bike breaking night. Thus far four frames have been broken on this court. Plus it is right behind the skate park so don't forget to bring your boards.

Except it can. Just curious, you think putting a board on the center line to make two 90 x 90 courts would be too small? No need for jackhammers nor cement trucks. Some plywood, screws, pabst and elbow grease.

90' is really short. Our rinks in St Louis are 50' X 120' and when we hosted the 5th Midwests, some folks felt that those courts were too small. Or, at least, enough smaller than their home courts to cause them to play a little differently.

Your court does feel tiny. It's fun to play on, but I always feel like I crank over about three times and I'm on the other side of the court. And you've played out a Cosmo a couple of times. It's not so big that it's overwhelming is it?

Not overwhelming, but it's definetely an adjustment if you're coming from a smaller court. The biggest changes for me were/are 1. your top speed is a lot faster and 2. passing takes a little more omph cos your receiver is so far away.

This is the main thing out there safety-wise. I would caution everyone to brake a little before you think you need to when you're going balls to the wall towards the back wall. I thought I had enough time/distance to stop and definitely didn't...twice. Hence my two deceased polo bikes.

I've been noticing the rules on ball jointing for recent tournaments is that if you do it you have to pass before a shot can be taken. They then take it further by banning scooped or jointed shots. To me that seems backwards. The thing I hate seeing is some dude screaming down the court hauling the ball behind him. It's a combination of the sound it makes, the fact that he's not even looking at the ball, and the lack of required skill that bugs me about it. As for scooped or jointed shots some of those are just beautiful. Furthermore, it's a very fuzzy area what is scooped or tapped. I wonder what kind of tournament rules could ban the ugly play that is completely boring and leave beautiful finesse shots in the game. If the shot is made with the business end I think it should count. As for ball jointing I'd prefer not to chase some jacko down that's dragging the ball behind him at full speed. Have you guys talked about how you're going to handle that yet?

Not legally...in our neck of the woods (and pretty much everywhere). I personally balljoint to get out of corners/off the boards faster, but I never carry it down court that way. I'm faster with the ball up front.

Every city and every tournament I've ever heard of has a release to shoot policy with balljointing. We allow balljointing and scooping for passing here, and there are people that do that very well in our club, but you wouldn't want to play against me if I was allowed to balljoint-flick a shot...I would score every time. That's why its illegal.

Not even me, though, brother. You don't want that kind of play allowed with the Wisconsin boys and the like at a tournament. While a top team may 5-0 you in tournament play, they'd do it a lot faster if they were allowed to sling shots from a ball-joint. I think the prevailing argument on the subject is that its truly skillful to place a shot right where you want it on a clear ball strike. If Tulsa wants to hold a tourney and allow balljoint and scoop shots, I think it would a riot to see, but its not going to happen at Midwests.

Oh yeah we can handle the cold, at least for a little while... it gets cold in Texas, but only for a few weeks, and usually closer to January and February...

yes! although it could also be in the high 60's like it was last year in STL. you just never know with Missouri weather.
Meanwhile, 560 miles north of Columbia, MO Minneapolis is on its way to the snowiest October ever.
although locally we play with mylec balls (due to availability, not preference), we are in search of some franklins for the tourney.
it shouldn't get cold enough, but we would probably switch to the orange mylecs if necessary.
we are aiming for a 5 round swiss method first day to seed the double elim. bracket on second day.

Playing with a ball rated for 70 and above make no sense in 50 weather! I bet we end up playing with the tye dye balls.
In my humble opinion,
Franklin Reds 40F to 80F (over 80F they need to be iced in between games otherwise they get sticky)
Orange 20 to 40F
Greens or super cold weather balls Below 20F
Once you get below 10F pretty much all the balls out there will crack.

Until yesterday I forgot how awesome it was to take slapshots with red franklins when it's 4C / 40F... just try not to block a shot with your ankle.

One of the first things I learned as a noob, from Menace's(RIP) years of NYC polo experienve: The street hockey temperature ratings don't translate to bike polo. Don't believe everything you read on packaging nurf.
Sveden is about right, red is roughly 40 or 45 and up, orange is below.
I'm an academic so I don't believe everything that I read but from personal experience I've seen a lot of balls destroyed. I'd much rather see continuity and zing then broken balls. Missouri can throw strange weather at you. At the meetings I have been bringing this up. Since our successful fundraiser I think we will be attempting to purchase some of these fabled and occasionally play with balls. See you at Los Marcos. VIVA!

austin will have two players flying into Lambert Int'l Airport and will need a ride to Columbia to play in this tourney. I don;t know any of their flight details yet, but i woll post it up soon as i know. in the meantime, anyone from STL able to pick up two (handsome- if that helps!) lads and their bikes from the airport and drive them to and from COMO? holler back ya'll!

So what if a team has never played in the Midwest Championships? It doesn't answer the question of how "skilled" the team is. Only if they've been to one of the bi-annual tournaments called "Midwests".

it does provide us with information. its not super important, but will help us setup a swiss bracket and get decent matchups from the start, rather than a team thats new to tourneys playing its first game against a team thats won a tournament before...
