this wasn't mentioned before. I'm looking for clarification from anyone organizing this. i've emailed NAH and organizers, but haven't heard back. I've also heard rumours of splitting up sunday, having a "fun bracket"...
whatever it is, can it be clarified, and made public.

Saturday:
3 groups of 16 teams playing 4 games of Swiss Round Robin each.
Top 12 teams from each group advance to Sunday's double elimination bracket - 36 total.
Top 36 teams are arranged by goal differential to determine seeding order.
Games on Saturday are first to 5 points or timed to 12 minutes. Ties are allowed on Saturday only.
Sunday:
36 team double elimination bracket.
First two rounds of winners brackets are first to 5 points or timed to 12 minutes. Rounds 3-5 of winners bracket are first to 5 or timed to 15 minutes. All remaining winner bracket rounds are first to 5 and untimed.
All losers bracket rounds (except for last 2 rounds) are first to 5 or timed to 12 minutes. Last 2 losers bracket rounds are first to 5 or timed to 20 minutes.

If registration does not fill (e.g. there is not 16 teams/court), we will still be taking the top 12 teams from each group.
We understand that 36 teams is not the "ideal number" for a double elimination bracket. With three courts/groups, we have found it to be the most appropriate way of setting a standard/easily divisible number from each group to advance to Sunday's bracket.

I'm not saying either tournament will be better, just thought I'd inject some drama in the mind of cascadia (glad matt hewitt noticed). plus, working at a computer all day makes me league of bike polo friendly...but I'm quitting my job tomorrow and moving to seattle after the cascadia tournament! more polo = less computernetz.

On Friday the 20th at 9m, we will be holding the Tricycle Race Track Championships. The course is located at Gammans Park and it WILL blow your mind!
For those of you on bike or who are going to be playing pickup at Columbia/Alberta Park on Friday night - At 7:30pm I will be departing from Alberta Park and heading to the Tricycle Race Track with stops at The Polo Laboratory, Columbia Park, burrito joints, beer stores and other questionable locations. After races, we will group ride up to the opening party together and pick up any stragglers along the way. The ride route is all flat, on quiet roads and has some really nice views of Portland. Emphasis is on going to be slow enough to drink and talk shit the whole time:)
Rules...
1) No Tricycles... I swear if you bring a tricycle I will disqualify you. All you need is your polo bike and your bike handling skills
2) Respect the neighbors... duh!

- Games are the first to five points or timed to twelve minutes.
- Each team will play four Swiss Round Robin games.
- Ties are allowed.

It is with great sadness that due to a family emergency I am having to pull out of this great tourney. Just a reminder that pickup is available at Alberta Park all day today. It's at NE 22nd and Killingsworth 97211. There is plenty of food/drink/hipster bullshit to be had south a few blocks on Alberta Street. Taqueria Don Poncho and the tienda next door on NE 20th and Alberta are Portland Bike Polo staples. I'll be by the court at 7ish to round up peeps for the awesome group ride to the Tricycle Race Track and welcoming party.
What are the plans for Saturday night? Sunday night (for those of us still in town?). Is there Sunday night Karaoke somewhere??!

Fantastic weather today in Portland. We made it to the court around 4 or so. Xian had the most blissed out, ready to pass out face on. Scizzors was up to his old tricks. Donnie pepper scored some hot goals, and a new song for him. I love playing in Cascadia. Pickup in Portland before a big tourney is special extra fun. Lots of familiar friendly faces, and new ones too. Looking forward to tomorrow.
Best game of day @ alberta. Crazy canucks vs BWS. 0-0 going 5 minutes into the game. Nick fires from the point, drunkie swats it out of the air. Alex pretty much took over: scored a goal and made at least another key block. It was a tough goal with some physical play that challenged the ref. Alex wills the ball straight down the cortt for another goal. Nick made a strong one late in the game. 12 minutes is a bitch, comes quick.
Crandall is doing a bang up job. Podium really helpful and games turn fast. PPPerfect weather (cloudy cool).SF is doing the most heckling.

Cascadia i polofeckin luv ya for a pure dead brilliant tournie with phenomenal polo at all levels. Putting the WOT THE EFF back in Fun where Leon Mike and Drew with a beer each shotgunned seconds b4 the joust. leon nails one to the score board against Andre Messman and Rowdy while Mike takes a seat on the boards for another beer with other polo buddies and lets the remaining 5 duke it out for a 1 to zip 5 minute period where messman rowdy and andre were denied on multiple occasions as they tried to qualify for Calgary . After FALLING BACK TO 3-1 down Mike decides to take his beer on court in his rather fetching angel white basket taking a tumble mid court and emptying it's contents on an already slick surface. This was polo at it's finest as the friends made the ref nearly fall of his perch with laughter. To those who thought this honest show of polo fun was lame and in bad taste for a qualifier polo the feck up and remember why we are here..........Messman. Fun, doughnuts and ball in goal is what it's all about in the end. To all that were there, you are the people my parents warned me about and i luv you for that and for those polo peeps who weren't there WE missed ya. Gota get on a plane to Oaktown now . Luv ya POLOVERSE .
For all the shenanigans on the court, at least there is no part of this thread bitching about peoples shirt colors. Clearly polo and drinking come first for Cascadia. I'm a proud rep right now!

seriously EVERYBODY, that was some rad shit. big fuckin thx to my teammates thug ponies(!) for killing it this weekend. kayla and sasha, i had no idea it was going to be so epic! thx to sasha and crandle and timtim and others for makin it happen. thx to my grandfather's xian and scizors for bein my baby birds (and for the drunk haircut). thx portland, seattle, sf, east van, edmonton, calgary, and LA polo for being awesome, thx to whoever else as well. next time it's going to be bigger and better! heading up to seattle in a day or two for a month of pick-up, cya there.

Thanks Portland for hosting a wonderful tournament. It was great to come out here and see some outstanding polo and meet some of the characters I hear about and see on this forum. The courts, food and atmosphere were great and it was awesome to play with the well-seasoned locals Drew and Ben. I hope to see you all in Seattle this fall; expect my Midwest boys to bring the heat.

So many thanks to everyone for coming down to Portland. I think that we can all agree that the true winner of this tournament was Cascadia.
I've put together a brief synopsis of the brackets as is linked below. The original Google Spreadsheet bracket turned out to be for the wrong number of teams, so One Million Thanks to Kiersten for drawing out the correct one on cardboard. There are some errors in that double elim bracket.....mtn mike vs mtb and the guardians won it? Weird.....I know they're good, but how do you win a game that you didn't even play in?
Like I said, it was a quick copy from the cardboard. I'll sort through it this afternoon - I don't know if there are other tourneys being run as 36 team doubles elims, but if there are, having the template in spreadsheet form will be useful.

I heard they had a plane to catch and they had to bail. From my perspective it was a good thing. The tourney went all the way to lights out, when would those two games have been played anyway?
The world don't stop for polo. People gotta work, planes gotta fly. People leave when they gotta leave.
The Rapture came and went and lo and behold, we did not ascend to the Blokker tourney, the mythical event where everyone plays all games to 5 with no time limit, pickup between every game, and no player feels rushed to the court.
You betcha everyone wanted to play with those guys. They were hot all weekend. There was some disappointment in the air.
Um, sorry, but if you're going to fly 3,000 miles across the country to play in a polo tournament, you may want to make sure you can play to the end. No one from Portland Bike Polo would have advised a 10:20 flight, if asked.
BWS left three hours early for an airport 5 miles away. They waited until the absolute last minute, after waiting an hour and a half to play, to bail on a 12 minute game against Outsiders. I think the assumption that they would have made it to the final games is just that, a massive assumption. I would have put my money on the Outsiders for sure.
Unfortunately, I think you're mistaking disappointment in the air for a bitter taste in the mouth.

Okay, so what's the official NAH ruling on a team who can't finish a tournament?? I am pretty sure we didn't discuss this possibility last year as we never suspected anyone would leave a tournament.
How did BWS place even after dropping out?
I am really interested in a ruling on this situation?? I'm looking at you NAH reps - its your decision to make, or make a recommendation to the BoD for a ruling....
So they left the tourney early, why the animosity?
If they came to the Midwest's this weekend they would've made their flight. We played out our 24 team double elim by 8:15ish.

there was a misunderstanding that NAH required a 36 team double elim. Most of the other regions did 24 team.
there was no misunderstanding in the double elim. numbers... we had enough time/lights in the day and chose to run 36 instead of 24... this was stated in all scheduling materials from the beginning...
Maybe they should have gone to the fucking Midwest then. Instead of showing up and eliminating teams, taking a top eight spot when they've already qualified, and prancing off before they even played out the whole tourney. Total disrespect. The only shitstain on an otherwise amazing tournament.

Big ups to all who didn't punch me in the mouth this weekend. I had a wonderful time with y'all, so good to be back in Cascadia and closer to my homeland. Fuck California, seriously. Saw some great polo, played some scandalously horrible polo. I'd like to thank the following people for letting me crash, Camilo for letting me sleep on top of and on the floor of his camper van, Gabe and Tom, for letting me sleep on their floor, And Dawn for letting me sleep under her living room table.

Finally feel like I have recovered from the cascadia polo rapture after leaving at the last possible minute and getting home just in time to get the kids on the school bus. A Big Thank U to Porland Bike Polo. U guys kick some serious ass. My first legit bike polo trip and i have to say it really blew my mind. Thank You Portland. I had a great time, and yours is one of the most beautiful and competitive Polo cities out there. The boards (best I have ever played on ever), the grub, the nets, and seeing all my friends was wonderful. To my teammates Evan and Martin: Great Games! 2 goals from the finals ain't too bad in Cascadia, I'll take it. Of course, much respect to Seattle and East Vancouver. Not just for letting me ball with some of your club's best players, but for providing a very exciting and competitive final! Holy smokes that was one of the most thrilling double finals I have ever witnessed. Miss you all...
