PAC Designs’ Bike-polo Challenge 2010

*Two teams of three players. Any type of bicycle is allowed.Handlebars must be plugged.
*Modified ski poles and plastic pipe are the most common materials to make mallets. The handle end of the mallet must be plugged.
*The ball will be a street hockey ball.
*Goals will be a pair of orange cones spaced one bike length apart.
*All games are timed.
*Start of a game: Each team will be stopped behind its own goal line and the ball will be positioned at center court. Play will begin with a “3 2 1 GO!” from the sideline.
*Players may not play the ball with their feet at any time.
*Scoring a goal must be made from what started as a hit. A hit is made from the end of a player’s mallet. A “shuffle” does not count as a goal; if the ball is shuffled through the goal, play continues uninterrupted.
*After a goal is scored, the team who scored returns to their half of the court. The team who was scored on takes possession of the ball.
*Call out the score after each goal.
*No passing “backward” through the goal.
*Players must not touch the ground or foot-down. Each time a player goes foot-down, that player is out of play and may not play the ball until they ride to the side line at center court and ring the bell. Then they may return to play. It is poor etiquette not to go immediately and directly to the tap-out bell once you go foot-down.
*Contact rules: “Like” contact is allowed. Player to player (body to body), except grabbing or pushing with hands. Mallet to mallet (generally, hitting another player’s mallet is poor etiquette if that player is not attempting to play the ball or in front of the goal, playing goalie). Bike to bike.
*Everything else is NOT allowed: Mallet to player, player to bike, mallet to bike, etc.
*Throwing of mallets is not allowed at any time, in any situation.
*Trash talking is allowed.

sry doug,i meant to say that we have the option of building two or three full size courts.
i've talked to kev and brian about cmwc guatemala,im currently working on completing a presentation for anyone who's interested in coming down to play some awesome polo.its just an option for others who cant make other events.thx WSM

you will be sorry for ever saying SORRY to this man...

slayers are only slayers if the slay out of town...

I'd def be interested in this. Is this the Panajachel on Lake Atitlan?

I was thinking about making a trip down there sometime over the next year.

this year at cmwc toyko,we easily has 16 teams.im looking at a 24team tourney running 4 days.
yes its Panajachel at Lake Atitlan.WSM

Both the map and the coordinates point to two other Panajachel's in Guatemala.

Only reason I say that is because I've heard Lake Atitlan is pretty cool.

I'm all over this. I want to volunteer for CMWC and playing in a polo tournament the week before would be awesome.

:Edmonton Bike Polo:

ok it is definitely at Lake Atitlan. I was there last September with the race crew and scouted the court spot. It's a beautiful place to be! Honestly one of the most gorgeous countries, with great people and so much to see around Lake Atitlan anyways.
Something to really consider if you're not going to Worlds or Europe then.
I will be down there and I will be helping the boys throw this for sure.

supported. you got me manting.

si si si.
that is it.
it's a view that is a little more east then the actual town of panajachel but you get the idea.

it is beautiful. in person.

HEY!!!! do have copyright on this pic? may I use it ?

it is exactly what I am looking for...

punch it chewy

shane your map is off...
that's pointing at the Panajachel in the city...not on the lake.

thx chandel!! how's NYC? since you left, polo has not been the same!!!im just waiting to get a tube to fit the tshirt and ur mail,so i will get one this weekend to send you.ciao bela WSM

no problem shane. my pleasure.
yeah. since i left i've not been the same with polo. you'll see. ;]
and no worries dude!
if you want to send it to my work it might be better?
i'll message you my deets.

I had an epic stay at Lago Atitlan about 10 years ago. I stayed in San Pedro for about 3 months, it was amazing. I'm seriously trying to sort out my 2010 travels around this event. Having a job is really starting to get in the way of my life right now.

i havent been there myself, but i've heard from people thats its amazing down there.i'm going for a month myself to build the courts and to setup everything for the tourney.the way i see it-we wont get the best teams there cause of the worlds being in europe.but i know there r messenger teams wanting to come and this is not just for messengers.its just an option for anybody to come play!!!! 3 2 1 POLO!WSM

if you are considering this at all/have ever wanted to go i suggest you take this opportunity.
it will be a while before an event like the cmwc will be hosted in a place like guatemala. granted everyone doesn't agree with messenger/polo associated events BUT this is also to benefit the community of Panajachel.
also there will be a number of people coming from europe/usa/asia that you can get a good deal on group flights etc...

i highly recommend going if you can.
shane. i may* be home soon. and i may* be coming with you for a month.

I've never been to Central or South America, and would love to make this my first trip. I have it on the calendar, we'll see if I can actually make it all happen.

I was looking today. $640 return from Vancouver to Guat City! I still have a few quetzales in my wallet. Seriously looking forward to this one. This trip is worth more than taking a few days off work for sure. Plan ahead! Guatemala is a beautiful country.

:Edmonton/East Van Bike Polo:

$270 round trip from Chicago!!! I'm going to Guatemala for sure

site is updated!!!! register at www.cmwcguatemala.com

Is the tournament $40 per person or team?

it's $40/player.included in the registration fee will be a limited edition cycling hat, event t-shirt and some other kool stuff to hand out.plus entry to the after-parties.all the money raised from registration will go towards building of the courts(2X) and operating costs.i'll be putting up the difference myself to make sure this event WILL happen.there's 10 days of polo for those who wanna stick around for LaOcho(fiqure 8 dirt track race) and the CMWC(Cycle Messenger World Championships)2010 events.courts will be open on the 1st-11th of september.thx

thank u all you guys for making GUATE the place for this great event thanx
i will be more than happy to help in anything that u need or to anyone

hey guys,CMWC Guatemala president Nadir Olivet is down in Panajachel.i asked him to look for ya'll if he had any questions/concerns/help issues.maybe email him wooracer@hotmail.com, for him to contact you.thanks guys,i'll see you soon.cheers

Thinking about making a road trip out of this one..maybe flying into Mexico City, playing some polo and traveling south via Guadalajara for more polo, through Costa Rica and Panama and on to Guatemala...would anyone be interested in doing this?

Hey fifo if you still plan to come to Mexico there´s gonna be some bike polo in this event called Chill and Go 2 in mexico city on august 29. The guys organizing haven´t told us if there´s gonna be a tournament or just pickup games.
But, if you really want to play polo you should come to Guadalajara. We´re the only place in mexico playing two or three days per week. And we´re too planning going to panajachel, all depends in how fast can we save for the trip.

Are allllll the teams filled up for this?? I beleive I will be definately making the trip out to this for sure. Anyone interested in picking me up as a third or building a team with me. I'm pretty excited to go and then hitch or work my way to costa rica. Hollller

"ok Mr. Schwinn fucking Armstrong!"

there are spaces left, register as a single player and pickup with a team after!! www.cmwcguatemala.com

you mean Guatemala

Throwing it out there too, looking for teammates. Anyone interested in going after Worlds in Berlin? I'm looking at SFO->Germany->Guatemala->SFO

57 kegs a tourny bitch!

this map works pretty well

no updates yet!!

shane can you update on the status of the tournament as it seems there are members [including yourself i believe] that cannot make it due to the airline cancellations...

i'm not sure who's taking over for me!! haven't talked to anybody reguarding the tourney.i'm sure it will still go on,but that's all i know it this point.

don't you feel it would be a good idea to find someone to take over for you?....

The polo court and the La Ocho race track were washed away by the floods!

Rain falls heavy on Pana, Nadir gets the Key
Submitted by bega on Sat, 09/04/2010 - 23:21
We got a ton of rain here from the hurricane. Many of the roads are washed out, it's hard even to get to Pana right now. But messengers are walking down the mountain to get here, sleeping in the Honduras airport, traveling back and forth from El Salvador to the USA just to get back to Guatemala. Several riders have been stuck in Antigua for several days.
And last night, in thanks for bringing us all here, making Pana the center of the bike messenger world for a couple of weeks, the Mayor of Panajachel gave the Key to the City to Nadir at a grand celebration with dancing and music and speeches.
Overnight, more rain fell. La Ocho fell in the river early this morning, along with the polo court and several homes. A few locales passed away, drowned by the water.
But the people here have incredible resiliency and are rebuilding the roads even overnight. There will be a walking bridge to span the gap on the road from Solola, and we have moved polo to the school, and we might even race on what's left of La Ocho on Sunday.
All we can do is take the next step. Some how it's all coming together.
