Balls out of Bounds

Place in? Toss in?

This is just a wee little rule, but it kind of drives me nuts!

When the ball goes out, the sidelines must retrieve the ball and either people give it a good toss or just place the ball in where it fell out.

It should be consistant.

Which do you prefer?

We just have someone outside the court throw it back in. Game on when it hits the court.

throwing back in seems totally inconsistant, especially for tournament play. some schmuck on the sidelines decides where the ball falls? even if its in front of your goal.... dont like it. maybe for weekly games, not for tourny. the ball should be put back in the court where it went out.

I throw the ball to where people aren't sitting around waiting for it. The only way to make it fair AND consistent is to have some sort of a face off. Similair to hockey.

But that takes to long, so I say kick it in or throw it into an open spot that isn't in a goal.

That would be fair..... if everyone did that...

so most of the time when a ball is dropped back in and i retrieve it, i clear it out to the other team. I figure that it is kind of like soccer when a team plays a ball out because of an injury, the other team will clear the ball back to the team that played the ball out.

The one thing that gets me the most is when two balls are dropped in. That shit sucks.

yeah, i like that soccer style. i only bring up this wee little idea because it totally happened to me in seattle this weekend. the ball was thrown in and dropped righ in front of the other team in front of my goal.. he scored. i mean... cheap goal.i was like ... we need a real "rule" for this!  plus flying balls makes for high swinging mallets. eek.

yes, i implement the soccer-style all of the time of my own accord. if i think that i've been given an unfair advantage by some freak-o ball return-in i just pass it down to the other team. if one of their players goes down in a bad way i clear the ball into their corner without chasing it and hope that they'll dump it back when their team is ready to return to play. they do it in soccer all of the time and it works really well. in east van we have tennis nets for the fourth wall and the ball sneaks out all of the time. whoever goes out to get it just whacks it back in randomly (not a pass) and play continues on.

We just have someone toss it in over their head backwards.

and no goals scored by the first person to touch the ball unless they pass it off and then get it back...

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

We have this thing when the ball goes out of bounds, everyone keeps going for it and the game continues, and the ball gets further off the court, and the game keeps going and everyone is yelling "one only" and nobody listens and the ball goes a bit further and...

damn.

The court we play on is only three sided so we're always having the play go wide and balls go out of bounds. It kind of sucks and we're trying to fabricate a tennis net style third wall that we can bring with us every time but for the last year we've tried to police out of bounds play and wide balls with the requirement that it shouldn't be carried back in - if you cross the line with the ball, or if you are the one to go after a lost shot you have to hammer it back in (obviously there is no scoring from oob) I always try to shoot for an empty spot, or put it along one of the end boards rather than passing it to a team mate, I think you are right meg it can make for some really unfair plays. I like your ideas johnny and martin that you pass it to the other team, or the first person to touch it can't score, I'll pass them on to the folks here to see what they think.

Don't worry though, for tournaments we build 4th walls out of 2x4's so for any of you who come to visit for our tournament in December you won't have to play on a 3-sided courts.

thanks. im not worried.

i just think that sometimes polo seeems so put together and organized. and sometimes not. i think that even little rules should be a rule. just so that there is a general consensus. thats what this page is for. right?

During pick up games I don't think it really matters.  In NYC generally whoever sent it out retrieves it.In tournament play though I think that there should be people in place to quickly drop a new ball where the old one left the court.  Tink did this at the ESPI's and we did it at the Roller Derby.  It just keeps play moving smoothly and seems very fair to have the ball reenter play where it left.

That was they way at the 4th Mid Wests in Madison this Spring. If a ball went out, a ref or spectator dropped a new one onto the court right where it ran out. It usually happened quickly enough that there were only the players at the ball before it went out there at the throw in, so there was not advantage given.

We (Leipzig, Germany) play completely without bounds, so there's no need for a rule. If the ball goes too far off, then there's usually two, maximum three people follow it. Since you can only score if you hit the goal from the "fron side" the ball goes bach into "the field" anyway.

This is kind of an old thread and since the rules thread was locked I'm just going to use it.

The ball goes out of play. The referee will stop time until the ball can be retrieved. The defending team will then get possession of the ball, half-court will be conceded and play will resume.

So who is the defending team? It's not determined by which side of the court you're on, is it? It's that team that doesn't have the ball, right? Yet, if it goes out off someone's wheelcovers or defending mallet I kind of think it should be "out on" them and the offensive team should keep the ball. So it could be "out on" whomever touched it last.

it works great for soccer
