Polo weather vs the price of beer where you live

vancouver weather

What's the weather like where you play polo? Today's forecast is a pretty accurate view of the conditions in the summer here on the west coast; liveable temperatures, light breeze, and low humidity, no clouds all day-- the kind of bullshit weather we've had to deal with here for the past three months.

The winter is cooler of course, but playable year round with temps ranging from 30 - 50 F, maybe three days of snow a year.

Tell us about the weather where you live, let us hear all about it 818 and Pensacola. Where's the best polo weather?

Ok this thread was a bit dry so I've added in a bonus question: Your summer weather might be shitty but I can bet you that East Vancycle pays more for their beer than anywhere else save maybe Calgary. What is the price of a six-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon tallboys in your home town? Here that's gonna cost you C$13.99 or C$15.99 for cold ones.

Calgary weather is f'd in the head ... one minute its rain or snow .. a hour later its sunny and +17.. when its hot in the summer its dry and it seems there will be lots of wind or none .. no real in between ... and when I say summer that is like June - August .. once September hits in comes the frost and possibility of snow ...for the last 10 years here most winters have been mild.... that means usually once a month a chinook blows in and melts the shit outta all the snow and we have a chance to find dry cement somewhere that's not a parking garage but even if its -10 or so here we will play outside ..it keeps the beer cold too..

...BallAholics...

Last Sunday in L.A we played in 86 degree heat with average humidity of 53. Usually when this happens not too many players show up. Winter can get down to around 45 degrees which is very great to play in. If you can deal with a crowded busy city you can find a descent spot to live that is very affordable. LA is a great place to play in year round and they have a great group of players. Further south in the Inland Empire where I am from the weather is a bit more mild considering I am closer to the mountains. Since I am in the process of buying a house in this area I can say you can find a nice 3 bedroom that’s over 1000 square feet for around 175k. My group changes throughout the seasons because my fallowing comes from a Community of Colleges that is close by. This is cool because I play with people that are essentially from all over the world. When they go home for Summer I give them mallets with hopes that they will start games in their hometowns.

Man this is the longest post I have written on this site.

most of your players cant leave the county due to parole issues right?

It's HOT here in New Orleans. The 28th we had a high of 103.6F with 84% humidity. Temperatures have been in the 90s these past couple of weeks. Humidity is always above 80%. Turnout has been low for our Sunday games. Wednesday nights have been hit or miss. Nights are still brutally hot sometimes. Our winters are perfect for polo.

In Chicago it's rainin..no wait, it's sunny. Ok, now it's raining again. With sporadic hail. Now sunny. Snow expected later tonight. Then 90 degrees in the morning, followed by lows in the mid-50s by 1 pm.

Then rain.

Then sun.

sounds exactly like calgary.

Dc
hot...sometimes muggy ... rain on and off...balls cold in the winter..
we play all weather! i like the rain it makes for a different game...plus it rained for about 14teen thursdays and mondays in the spring had no choise but to play on...

Seattle is rocking it hot today. Should be this weekend too. But god, that is some expensive ass beer. You poor bastards. I think PBR down here is closer to 7 or 8 bucks for some tall boys. Vancouver and Seattle weather: tie. Vancouver and Seattle beer: +1 Seattle.

i know a place just after we cross the border toward seattle that has pbr tallboys for $3.99.

why america go make me feel like chump?

St Louis has the pretty standard Mid West weather. Cold winters and sweltering summers. Winter here is much milder than in Chicago - more about ice storms than snow storms, none of this -20f BS. Summer is hot and muggy. The two I've been here for have been mild and nice, but the locals tell me that the usual story is that there's about three weeks every summer where you just can't do anything. Too hot.

Beer is cheap. Dollar 2x4s of the cheap stuff at gas stations. 1.50 pints of Bud on tap at the dive around the corner. Standard (in my travels anyway) 4 dollar pints of something good at a nicer pub.

Housing is a steal. Move-in ready homes in relatively established city neighborhoods for under 100k. You can actually find 2 and 4 unit rental property in this town for a 100k. That means that if even one unit is rented at 500 a month, your note is paid.

If you want to go all urban pioneer, there are city programs that will help you buy a shell of a house for less than 10k. You'll need another 40 to fix it up.

Tampa:

Its 91 degrees outside right now. As its 3:00, the skys are blue, but at 5;00 it will start to rain. at 6:15, it will dry up, which leaves up from 7 to 9:00 for daylight polo. Its a bit hot out, but in the winter we have some days in the 50s. prety much playable all year round.

a 4 pack of PBR tall boys runs you $4.

$2.33 40 oz pbr beer coat!

milwaukee what!

$4.99 average for a 6 pack of PBR tallies in Cincinnati. Wicked heat much of the summer (80-100f) although this weekend is unseasonably mild (70s with low humidity).

Same in Lexington. When did it turn into September?

SF is pretty much 65-70 degrees every day, and at least partly sunny in the Mission where we play. It gets a little colder in the winter and we get rained out 2 or 3 times a year. We have great weather, but we pay way too much for beer and rent.

Ten bucks for 6 pbr regular size = aprox 88cents american $8.88. Must factor in that pbr in Canada is 5.9% alkahol not like in the us where it's under 5% but the exact amount I don't know because it doesn't say. I would guess 3.5%.

Austin today is a high of 101 with 61% humidity...

"A pedicab today saves a pedicure tomorrow!"

weather, continuing to suck. almost hottest day of the year today.

beer, continuing to be cold and pricey:

1/2 barrel of miller light (15.5gal ( almost 59 liters ) ) in madison 87$ plus a free .375 lt of jagermeister. weather = tough as shit

offer expires 9.28.09

it is hot and sweaty(we had like 60 straight days of three digit temps) here in Austin, TX til about November when it starts to drop down to an average temp of about 50-60 for the "winter" season. We are enjoying a lovely little "cold front" with temps topping off in the 90s....feels fuckin fantastic! It stopped raining here like three years ago, we don't have to worry about precipitation- ever again.

Beer Prices: the jackelope (a local cyclist friendly bar) serves $1 Lonestars to cyclists for solid months at a time- that is the current special all of September. Thursday nights play host to our polo practice and a social bike ride that always finishes at a bar with FREE kegs of the Champagne of Beers for cyclists. Drinking is pretty easy to do on the cheap here, and happens often.
ATX! Come play with us, ya'll!

yea but are all the women beaten up like you?

well, we have plenty of tough as nails gals who are worth a damn here.
all the other ladies are silly sorority sisters who waste their time and money on the infamous 6th street...

yea i get it, too bad you changed your photo, those were pretty well developed bruises. austin has always intrigued me, i grew up 5 hours from there. throw a tourney this winter and MKE, MSN, and CHI will drive down.

Here at 6000 ft above sea level we drink our pbr by the 30rack. Full case if you will, or wont, and while 3.2 is avail in the grocer, you can get standard fare 4.73, at a liquor store for abound $17.00 after tax. I know of a place or two if your really broke and like to ride with a full case that you can score for around $13.00 and maybe a hand job. The weather, well its 300 plus days of sunshine, mild temps high yesterday was 85 F and humidity was excessively balmy at 50% average. We play polo twice a week, and we drink pbr all the time.

"Officially changing my name to _____ George"

Here in Barcelona a sixpack 33c cans is arround 3€ (2 litres).
Our weather is really mediterrean way...300 days per year of sun, minimum tº in winter is arround 10ºc (50 F) and the max in summer are arround 30ºc (86F). We play allways during the night, then the sun is not a problem in summer.

SF today. Warm & blue sky, almost 70F feels warm in the sunlight. Definitely hoping for a repeat next weekend. Deeelightful weather for evening pickup last night.

Bud at Costco comes out to about $4/6pk. Some bars will do Jameson & PBR $7. It's the swanky crafty micro brew with fancy sausage & truffle oil fries that gets you in this town. Mmm.

Well la ti dah Mr. Fancy, shopping for beer at Costco!

Yeah but how long does it take you to walk to the beer aisle then all the way the 1/4 mile bakc up to the counter then out to your car parked at the back of the lot....my time is worth more than that
www.mkebikepolo.com

Not to mention all the Costcos around here are 15 miles out in the Suburbs.

Do they have CostCos in the heart of SanFran? The streets truly are paved with gold.

One Costco. It is quite the happening place.

Two doors down from my apartment is a fancy beer store where one can buy a six of Dale's (cans) for $11. Or one beer from some place where they deeply contemplate beer, also $11. There's plenty of gold in this town though you wouldn't know it looking at the streets.

PS. Truffle = $$$ fungus, yes. The kind foodies pay top dollar for, and it doesn't even make you see colors.

they why do they call chocolates truffelS?

fungas like a mushroom? mushroom oil? i thought mushrooms were mostly water

The internet can be your friend.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truffle_oil

Not no the menu anymore at the Alembic, though you can still pay north of $15 for one beer. The funny thing is you can't get in that place its so crowded.

But really, tacos at Pancho Villa with a Negro Modello is culinary excellence, < $12. And the weather is better on that side of town.

so truffel oil is low quality olive oil with some synthetic chemical added to it that is similar to that found in truffles? well polo joel if you dont mind ill take my fries covered in curds and gravy. once again to recap

sanfransisco = costco+ expensive beer+ wack ass fries+ shitty polo scene.

ben = bitch ass internet shit talking mother fucker.

"shitty polo scene"
We got 2 nights of pickup, 50-ish weeks a year. Oakland throws once a week and we got an exchange going. Finding more clubs in nearby cities. Organizing our 3rd tourney of '09. Not bad for a town that found bikepolo.ca just this year. In Portland Rory asked Kim & me what SF was going to do to bring up the level of bike polo. I think our answer has been pretty good. Would be nice to send someone to Cascadia polo school, and get them back (hi Forrest). Meanwhile, we're just playing lots.

"bitch ass internet shit talking mother fucker"
Without whom this place would be nothing but mysterious bird calls and far-away tourney announcements.

Nope, we are keeping Forrest. He is assimilating nicely. We might keep you too if you come up to visit.

"Cascadia is the black hole of the poloverse!" Good players are drawn in and never want to leave!

in all seriousness it does sound like you guys have a cool deal.

although truffle fries, so 80s can i get some pink peppercorns with that? paul bertoli would be ashamed.

Pancho VIlla tacos and beer after an awesome tournament was a great way to round a really great weekend when we were down there.

If there's one thing you learn quick in a Minnesota winter its to look on the bright side of things. Today while slogging through 3 inches of fresh powder on top of some icy sleet, I had a revelation. Even though I only get to play polo once a week on a good week, every day I ride my polo bike to work is foot down training.

Spring is coming, the prophet Phil Connors told me so in a little documentary called Groundhog Day

Taking unnecessary photos of your bike while getting drunk at noon = ???

atleast you're awake

Today this vampire is braving the light.

For polo, of course.

man my vote for best weather year around on the hottest day and even on the coldest is for my home town of Honolulu you should all come out at least once...

yeah but you neglect to mention a six pack of bud is like $12! HI is quite nice though, great memories of being he'keiki, Kahala on christmas day, aunties making lau lau and poke aku. yum!

ah yes but a 6 pack of pbr is $6 and a spicy ahi bowl is $4 so for $10 im pretty well feed and my thirst is almost completely quenched

that rules. PBR near my house is going for $8/6pk. Spicy ahi bowl doesn't exist. We have taquerias that make burritos which can feed a small family.

good god!!! 8 doll hairs for a sixxer? twelve ounce beers? I can get a 12 pack of PBR for $7.50 here in Casper, WY. Some places around here try to sell them for 10 or so. You can also get a 30 pack of PBR for 15 bucks.
SF is fucking expensive to live in. I have a friend whom lives there and one who moved there and then moved back because it was so expensive. you guys have higher minimum wage, right? ramblerambleramble

yep. $8 for 6 12oz. cans.

But keep in mind you can find better deals. This was just an example of a place on the way to the courts (17th & Church)-- pretty funny too because the guy usually charges more, but because I'm in there all the time he's 'cutting me a deal'. LOL

Minimum wage here is $9.79 I think- And your health care is paid for by the city if you don't have any insurance.

My favorite benefit to living here is the fact that I haven't owned a car since moving here in 1989 (half-truth, I got married 10 years ago and the wife needs a car for her work. I never drive it though) Not paying for insurance, gas, or upkeep translates to more money for overpriced beer. Oh, and the rent control. You don't want to know how much my 2BR apartment costs me a month. seriously, they'll pry that lease outta my cold dead hands.
Other reasons:
>The burritos (as mentioned above) and amazing restaurants in general Most within walking distance
>lots of crazy people here. That guy screaming at the lamppost reminds me that I'm not doing all that badly, helps with perspective. I like perspective.
>estimated 20,000 regular bike riders
>takes 15 minutes to ride to work from my flat

i stand corrected i found 12 pack of milwaukees best for $6.52 (with tax) and and ahi bowl for $4. I am full and drunk...mission accomplished!

i think courts and how often you play should be included into this thread. i am looking to relocate.

Hello?
Duh.

You'll see. Unless you drilled out your eyes because they were too heavy.

P.S. See you in a week!

Ah Piet, the summer time weather makes you question your best decisions?

This time of year SF is mostly just wisps of cold foggy wind. We laugh at the summer tourists in their shorts and new, overpriced SF sweatshirt they were forced to buy at Fisherman's Wharf. We live in a cloud in SF.

Of late we've gained new talent from MKE, PHX and just recently SD. When will a Cascadian venture out of the forest to give sunny California a try? We've been chewing on Casey for too long, give us someone new to freshen our game.

His name is actually Susan now. And yea, he's definitely been getting it.
