in south florida, if it rains, we all stay home and cry. we get easily discouraged by bad weather... just kidding. we have squeegies that we roll all the water off our courts with. Or, we have some covered courts that we have been thinking baout using. We don't have winter here. I don't kno what your talking about. parking garages are good refuge too. We did that for a while.

Outdoors. We get snow, not as much as some NA cities so we are able to keep a court clear or we play under highways or in parking garages.

Started new thread about temperature and choosing polo balls: http://bikepolo.ca/forum/stuff-that-breaks/2009/10/13/cold-weather-polo-...

Come to Victoria! We're holding an outdoor polo tournament in early december:
http://www.bikepolo.ca/victoria-winter-mixer

I play on an outdoor hockey rink. I love playing in the rain. It reminds me of Portland.

what ya do when its snowing is get one of those three wheel bikes put a wood blade on the front of it
then start pushing the snow around if ya get tired maybe ya weld a dryer motor on it plug it in and there ya go ya got yourself a snow plow

and then it is safe to say mr carter

YOUR BIKES SUCKS

rawbie the rooster boardz the 1st

30 degrees, rain or snow we play under the lights on a fake grass football (soccer) court.. Just about the size of 2 tennis courts, with 3-foot wide goals. Only time we skip out is when the snow accumulates to the point the ball doesn't roll:-)

we still play through the winter in madison. Most cities have neighborhood water reservoirs that have tennis courts on top. You just have to find them. The nice thing is that because the water has to be kept at around 8c that the snow melts off.

in mke they tore down our water resevoir couple years ago. it would have been an awesome fucking place to host a huge tourney and it was the highest point in MKE now its a grassy field with native plants in it so we couldnt even hold a old school grass game there. :(

Currently we've successfully hosted pick-up at our old garage location which sits next to lake Michagean. It gets cold, but helps out quite a bit. Crossing our fingers the local sheriff stays away though.
Hand-warmers, whiskey, bourbon, brandy, Fur coats, bros, fours, dice and babes... And sometimes very fast paced games to keep warm.

Move to Vancouver

:Edmonton/East Van Bike Polo:

We so rarely get snow here that it was a fun novelty, besides the court was more like a hockey rink with some snow on it because of the wind than a chunky snow field.

We hit up a covered space for the first time that I know of last night.
There's a bar right next door, played real late, even in some real nasty weather.
Hoping we can get it to be 'our' space, would be baller, and would save CBP some player loss in the winter time.

You'll see. Unless you drilled out your eyes because they were too heavy.

We love playing the shiny courts of a wet San Francisco! Ya got to burn up your rims & pads real hot before they'll lock up the rear. Once that gets going the fun never stops. Breakaway one-leg skid bounces off the cage!!

Over a foot of Sierra cement has just been dropped....we're heading to the bus depot tomorrow. Until Paul Blart kicks us out.

We've been playing in a parking garage, which is dark and cold. Finally yesterday we moved to a different garage and went up on the roof. Glorious sunshine and plowed snow.

Rooftop polo

And the snow banks kept the ball from rolling off the edge. Mostly.

We play in Castle Grayskull, our garage spot, but I'm so sick of that place. The concrete is like a cheese grater and the cold makes any balls bouncy enough to ping pong off the garage. I want my glorious hockey rink back :(.

The basement of a large parking structure serves us pretty well in during the winter, affectionately named the Thunderdrome. best thing is there is no wind, but the concrete pillars lining both sides kind of make things interesting.

Keep your standards low, and morale high.

fuck those pylons.

you know you love them. they get bigger the more beer you drink.

Outdoors @ Holiday Park in South Florida always works for me!

ive been thinking about this as well. saskatoon gets snow and cold.

has anyone had issues, or do you have advice when approaching indoor rental spaces?

what do you do in calgary and edmonton?

I've only spoken to to police once, they were fine with us being there. They were more stupefied with what we were doing.

Keep your standards low, and morale high.

We recently scored an indoor gym once a week. Look for older schools or community centres that are really just happy to have it rented out and be making some money.

It's a hard rubber floor, perfect size.

Or, try a parkade. We've got a basement parkade and it's slightly warmer down there. We play after 9pm and haven't had any issues with security. It's gated so maybe that has something to do with it, they figure they don't have to check it? I don't get it, I thought we'd get kicked out.

Good luck finding a space. You're welcome to come visit to get your polo fix.

I like how most of the replies are from places that don't really get any snow to speak of....Shovel it? Come visit us in the winter sometime and I'm sure you won't want to shovel anything.

  • calgary-blizzard.jpg

so what does calgary do for polo in the winter?

I'm gonna go on a guess and say watching hockey is cross training for polo...

http://flames.nhl.com/

Watching the Flames isn't any kind of training. You're not an Avs fan?

Come to Edmonton to play this year? We play for the first time on the court this Sunday and I can't wait to see how the floor works out for us.

We've got one parkade that we play in near SAIT. No permission to play there and we get screwed whenever there is a show on at the Jubilee - otherwise we've had pretty good luck with security not hassling us too much.

Played there last weekend - 7 of us - in -20c temps. Chilly but good times! Here is a photo - http://instagr.am/p/8Qjv/?ref=nf

We've started an indoor location (Haarlem, The Netherlands), with snow and projected temperatures for the next weeks are only offering more snow, ice and wind, that works out fine.

I'm new to polo and didn't know anybody playing ball.. After seeing some play at Polomotion in Utrecht, I've posted a message on a dutch forum (http://www.pristinefixedgear.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=748), and we've been playing 4 weeks in a row, inside an abandoned factory (which I rent/occupy/take care of; preventing possible squatting), with up to 12 people showing up from all over The Netherlands (Dutch, Japanese, Italian, Portuguese, English).. Even tough we could only play on our small court (#1) it was a lot of fun, and a whole lot better than being outside, the court is smaller than people were used to though..

Time has come to expand, we'll be busy building our first proper indoor court in the following weeks, using 50 pieces of 18 mm 250x98cm hardboard covered in a plastic layer. :)

Update: our first diy court is finished, took two days with two guy's. Measuring 17,4x37,5 meters.. :)

awesome! do you have any more pictures to share :) supports for the sideboards, corners etc.

-my stomach is a pickle-

That court is awesome, I am very jealous.

"inside an abandoned factory (which I rent/occupy/take care of; preventing possible squatting)"

How did you find this place? and how did you form a relationship with the people who own it, to be allowed to do this?

I look forward to your answer.
Colin

It's a type of lease where you (and some others) are actually a caretaker of the building. Whenever a building looses his function (old factory/office/house etc), it can take years before the space is being re-developed/-used. This often means a decline in the state of the building (leakage, graffiti, squatting, burglary etc) and thus the neighborhood.

How much better to offer the space to people looking after your building. I think this type of construction could work in most cities, the world economy is certainly helping us out there and together with all those people here (lopb) we know plenty of people we could contact.

The court looks good, but is not on a permanent location. The hanger we use now is actually my neighbors, a paint artist, specialized in BIG paintings, like 15x22 meter. But winter hits him as well and with temperatures below 8 degrees Celsius the paint won't dry. So we swapped rooms, bought some wood and screws, and build it. Whenever the painter wants to return to his atelier, we move the court to another space in the building, mostly meaning a smaller court, or less ideal floor (slippery tiles). We are thinking of making it more mobile, so in the summer we could also set up courts outside or on other locations. The current setup is a bit heavy to be real mobile though.. The panels weigh about 35Kg each..

I have to say that we are stretching the limits of my current contract though (eg normally there's a maximum of 10 guests allowed) and leasing in this manner means you have two weeks notice and no (none) certainty of new buildings being available when you do get the notice..
I'd be very interested in getting in contact with some like-minded people to see if we could set up some type of document (strategy/plan) if/how to do this in other counties; more indoor locations (http://leagueofbikepolo.com/club/haarlem).

We played for 4 hours today in -26 with wind chill. If you don't have the option to play indoors... suck it up and play in the cold because you love the game!!

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

For real. We shovelled/snow blowed a tennis court. We did half last week and finished yesterday. Sunday polo/shovelling every week in Winnipeg. Brave the cold and the snow and you won't be dabbing much come spring.

we need salt for realz

We just got the keys to an even better and FREE indoor space.

24/7 access and its located right downtown.

Taking a half day and playing polo at noon today! I am so fucking happy right now.

Congrats! I'll be in town February 18th-20th...what days are you all playing pickup?

February 17th and 21st. Sorry!

Just kidding, any out of towners who come to our city get to play polo whenever they want.

Keep in touch.

what? how? details please!

hark the herald sun gods swing!

How? Umm... we knew a guy.

Basically a man is awesome and owns a ton of property.

Look under bridges.

^Want!

Port hangars. We get kicked out smartly week nights but seem to be tolerated weekend days. There have been some impressive collisions with the pillars, we have to shepherd the newbies carefully. Going to be chilly today, minus 22c.
