possible court location but we need liability

we can get use of a tennis court thats on county school property but they would require us to have liability insurance. did some searching on the forum but didnt find much. anyone dealing with this?

There are a ton of mentions of insurance for tournaments on other threads (http://www.leagueofbikepolo.com/search/node/insurance), mostly for tournament hosting purposes, but i don't think anyone has solved this issue at the club level. Perhaps London England. But the solution might look different in different countries.

Since you appear to be in FL, this may not apply, but most of the solutions up here in frosty bureaucratic Canada have looked like ducking under the wing of an already established non-profit, whether it's one that runs a community bike shop, or promotes cycling locally, or something of the like.

I'd assume something like Cycling BC, where you pay yearly dues and what not to enter races and are covered with liability (totally talking out of my ass here, someone who's actually a member/leader will step up shortly no doubt) would be the easiest way.
Best to use the infrastructure others have worked hard to create, if your groups can coexist nicely.

Polo can always run a "skills camp for kids!" during the summer and come out looking like champs.

Excited to hear how you navigate it.

we had to deal with this a few times but what it really came down to was the degree of perceived organization of the individuals playing. what if me and joe blow decided we wanted to play tennis on those courts every sunday? do we need to get liability insurance? most likely not. thats really what bike polo amounts to, a couple of friends getting together and playing pickup. the club is not a legally recognized entity, and there is not a heck of a lot of organization to it. this is not the case for tournaments. so hopefully you can convince them that yall just wanna use the courts and have fun every so often just like any other member of the community. all this is assuming that the courts are open for the community to use freely.

well, the issue here is that the court is on an old school campus that is not used anymore. the courts will never be used again. if it were owned by the parks and rec. we could get use of it easy, but its on school property and there is a guy willing to work with us if we can figure out liability. i tried the local bike clubs: SORBA and the road club and neither think that their liability will cover it.
there is a clause in the florida statute that deals with liability and bicycles on government property, but i have not tracked it down yet. i was told that if someone is hurt while using a bike on government property, the state is not liable. we will see if we can use this.

so what you're saying is nobody can step foot on this property without liability insurance?! please clarify, who would need insurance and who wouldn't. how about some random kids playing jumprope? (ya, remember that?) do they need liability insurance too?

there is also something on "extreme sports" or something like that that the state is not liable in florida. some skateboard park guy was talking about i dont know the details.

yeah it kinda sounds like they are making you jump though some flaming hoops just so you can play some pickup games every now and then?.. JERKS.. and all the posts so far are the best ideas .. GET INVOLVED .. if you can't piggy back on some sort of other bike club.. make your own .. talk with the community ass. offer to pay dues .. and/or help clean up the park .. or paint over graffiti or any kind of good gesture goes a long way ..

we have done most of the above here .. and what we get in return is freaking awesome ..

good luck ..

I didn't even read any of the replies to the OP but here is an insurance carrier that specializes in bike events. We have used them for all of our events here in NYC and I beleive they even told Ken that they were going to develop a "bike polo specific" coverage plan. Very helpful people who have always answered any of my questions.

Thanks for the valuable info Dave. I talked with Dan at McKay and he quoted me $400 a year for our club for $2 mil in liability.

Does that only cover you at specific locations?

This covers all members of our club at any location we choose to play.

This company might only apply to canada but there must be a usa equivalent.
They specialize in athletics and insuring leagues etc...

so wait... because im a dirt poor american who is confused as all hell by anything to do with government and medical... if i break something, lose an eyeball or crack a skull... the host club for the tourney will cover injuries? i just started playing about 6 months ago, and i'm starting to travel more for polo. and i'm scared that being far away from home, very little cash and no personal insurance, i'd be left bleeding in some ER somewhere with a huge bill.
if tournaments cover liability, then that puts my mind at ease if i get a mallet to the teeth.

give blood. play polo.
