Little Rock Court Project & Donations

Last year at the River City Rumble we had Parks and Recreation come by that same day wanting to help us clean up and do repairs..Four months later and we are working with AmeriCorp/The Clinton Foundation/Downtown Partnership/Parks & Rec/Friends of MacArthur Park to get both courts rebuilt. The plan is to get enough donations: materials & funds so that on Sept 11th national Day of Service AmeriCorp can provide the workforce to get it done. They have also been very helpful in providing architect plans & a material list.
So we have been scouring/scrounging/begging/submitting proposals to local businesses/National hardware centers/Local neighborhood Associations/Yahoo Groups/whoever we can to get this done. So far, everyone (Local) has been extremely helpful. The pile of lumber in my backyard keeps getting bigger..Hopefully this'll happen & the next tournament here will be even more fun than the last one. The one thing that presents a little bump is the lack of city funds for this (along with the recession)..but I think that we're making pretty good progress so far.
Plus, the two big local papers are wanting to do stories on our project, so that can't hurt..maybe some fatcat will throw a bunch of money at us.

If you want to help us out with our project, there's a link at the top of our club site:

    120' x 55' (times 2)

oooh, man. 10 feet too narrow. Too bad all your efforts are for naught, you'll never be allowed to host a major regional tournament, despite a somewhat central location and side-by side identical courts. Whotta shame.

their loss I guess. Seems that tennis courts are fairly standard size and finding unused/underused ones at neglected inner city parks would be pretty easy in many locales.

Lucky, it's really a great court to play on and is smooth. I don't have any problem with it. Question is, how does a huge tourney event being the NA's use the shittiest courts on earth? hahaha

Thanks for that brother. We did what was possible..hope evryone gets to play on it sometime..next move is resurfacing & lights..gotta get writing some grants.

    Thanks.

That's good news (DESPITE WHAT LUCKY SAYS!!11!!1). We're working on repurposing a court that's the same size (actually two of them, like your situation) and getting walls built and the lights fixed. Good to know that others are using that same dimension, from other places I've seen and read about, it seems like 240x110 is the a fairly common slab dimension for "drop in" type tennis courts.

I'd like to use what you did (repurpose, rather than purpose built) as an example with a meeting I have with our recreation director. I read the blog but still have a couple more questions... which one of you guys is the one to talk to about it?

thanks, i'm compiling the proposal and i want to make sure i have all the questions that i can come up with before i take up your time; so i can get them all in one fell swoop. i'll be in touch in the next few days. thanks a lot for offering to help.

give us a shout, east van has done a lot of work with the city parks department to get our purpose-built polo court.
