lighting

polo is still in the infancy stage here in Salt Lake City and right now we have one court that is half lit. Now there are some really good Tennis courts that can be usable in the surrounding areas but they do not have any lights which are a necessity here. Has anyone used portable lighting that they would suggest?

if you really want to be able to play after dark the kind of lighting you'll need isn't exactly portable. daylight is a precious commodity.

edit: or find somewhere that's already lit. it may not be perfect, but if it's lit you're halfway to a decent pickup court.

weekends we play day time but during the week we start at 7 end around midnight so there is a lot of darkness. So far we found only one court that is lit, but it is really narrow has large cracks and weeds one of the guys does landscaping so we have the tools but it blows having to trim and sweep the court once a week. Now this court works don't get me wrong but there was some verbage about San Diego guys using portable construction lights.

Our court isn't that bad. The Sugarmont courts have more grass than asphalt and huge cracks. no good we will keep searching.

Well yes Chuck our court is not that bad but it could be much better that is all I am getting at. It would be nice to find a wider court and one with less weeds and rock for the ball to hide.

Agreed but Sugarmont is not the place. Dude your avitar? My eyes!

I played under portable lighting once, recently in Munich. The lights seemed borrowed from an ad agency or something -- they looked like studio lights. It was good enough but not ideal.

The lights need to be up really high off the ground or they are in your eyes. That's a challenge with portable.

I don't know...maybe it's easier to fix cracks than to install lighting.

We bring a generator and a bunch of halogen lamps sometimes. It's not ideal - harsh shadows and spotlight sections of court make the game pretty tough. But we do get to play later.

You can call around to local equipment rental yards and ask about floodlamps on booms (the "construction lights"). But it'll probably be cost-prohibitive for weekly polo.

Here in Christcurch we've been playing with our high watt head lamps (big MTB culture here, so most players have these for night trail riding). It's pretty full on at first but has gotten us thru a winter of night polo. Until our local council sort the re-connection of the floodlights to the court it's better than not playing polo!

Get your city to build you a proper night time training facility.

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

We've been trying and it's not easy.

I like your polo.

we just recently scoured Craigslist for a portable generator, and everyone pitched in a few bucks.
that and some 120w floods on those cheap clamp style light housings, and you have 'decent' lighting..
it just turns it into a different game when the sun goes down, but still tons of fun.
