So I sent a brief email to Velocity regarding 26" 48h rims, and they can do it. If I can get some idea of who wants one or two or three rims, then we can decide where to go. Ben Schicago was thinking about cliffhangers which was my inclination as well. Let me know what you folks think.

Actually, I don't pay $100 for something that I feel is unnecessary and just a fashionable accessory that says polo.
Truck agrees with me on that, you won't find a pologuard on his bike either.

Im thinkin about Salsa Gordos 36h....
should I be talked out of it
problem is I am having a hard time scoping a 48 hole SS MTB hub
I should probably stop throwing things
I've been playing on a pair of Salsa Gordos for quite a while now. Built them myself with heavy straight gauge spokes. I had to get a little styley and put purple nipples on them.
After killing a Surly hub I put a White Bros Eno on the back. The rubber is Schwabble.
They are STRONG. More than a few weaker wheels have bent themselves upon their love.
Very happy.
One thought is to use the ben's hub and space it for whatever frame you put it on. Ben Schicago runs an old Giant at 126, which is only 3mm of additional spacers. Otherwise, shimano makes a tandem 48h 8/9, or if you want to get really funky, use a BMX 14mm with 3/8 slotted axle. My other thought is to hit up some people and see if I can drum up a 48h version of an existing hub.
if any one wants 48 hole deeo vs contact me we have a pile of them in our warehouse and im sure they could go to the best bidder for bike polo Universalcycles.com

All:
I have an order in for 20 rims. We're looking at an ETA of around February early side and late March on the tail end. Price is going to be about 70, and these are MSW cliffhangers in 26".
that's actually a bit cheap considering. The rims are being air freighted from Australia and get custom drilled. It's a small batch and they are machined sidewall. Each one of those things adds to the cost. I'm still checking into 135mm spaced hubs for SS in 48h, but I'm guessing nobody is going to do a run any smaller than 50. respacing the 120mm Ben's hubs won't work well either, as that would mess with the chain line quite a bit on a setup currently running a 135mm spaced hub. What will probably happen is I'm going to wind up trying to fabricate a frame specifically for polo that will wind up with a 120mm wide rear end.
You can find BMX hubs that are 135mm and just switch out the axle so that it fits on a regular bike (they made special axles for this), this would only work for a SS speed though. Also, i really do think that 70 is expensive. I can get 48h deep v's for 38 bucks. Machined and everything.

I know about the slotted bmx axles, though the 135mm spacing is new. Which hubs?
Halo makes a hub with 48 holes and a 3/8 or 14mm axle http://www.halorims.com/HaloNew/djd.html
also, rims. http://www.halorims.com/HaloNew/sas.html
26" rims? Far as I know that's why these will cost more: limited production of a rim size that universally doesn't come drilled higher than 40. But if you can get 48-hole 26" Velocity Cliffhangers (they don't make a 26" deep V anymore) for 38 bucks, let's do it.

I probably posted this in the wrong thread
I dunno what spacing these would be, and they are 26" but, how about 140 spoke wheels?

IO th I think at some point Bainesworth from RVA was riding around on one of those...
Let me know how it goes, as i want to do something similar.

I'm sure those Velocity rims will be awesome. But fuck damn the Salsa El Gordo is a serious rim.
Built my new rear wheel last night. I like it. Can't wait to ride it.

I just built a new rear wheel using a 48h DK BMX hub that I picked up for $15 on ebay and a Salsa Gordo 26" 48h rim. I have a 5-speed freewheel on there to help get to the court and back but the wheel is dishless. Nobody has t-boned my rear wheel yet but I imagine it should hold up well and it's a huge upgrade from the cheapo MTB wheel that I had before.

im watching an auction with these hubs as we speak. is that a 135 spacing there? i'm using a track frame right now, so i'm hoping i can space it down appropriately, but 135 to 120 seems like a stretch...
tucker- i am waiting on you to set up those polo lessons from me your mom won in the silent auction. let me know when is good for you....

I'm thinking about bailing on velocity. They are being very noncommittal about a delivery date and the salsa gordo can be had in a 48h for much cheaper.

Best I could do. Salsa is a locally designed company here in Minnesota. I should let them know their rims are being field tested for bike polo.
