48 hole Hubs

I just talked with one of the owners of Tree Bicycle Company, a "high-end BMX bikes and parts manufacturer" in St Louis. They have made 48-hole hubs in the past, and probably will again in the future. Perhaps in the near future with a little prodding.

I'm no mechanic, but I'm pretty sure that BMX hubs can fit in our frames and laced to 26 or 700 rims. Let me know if I'm worng. I'm sure it's super-beefy, given what those kids do on them bikes.

Anyone want in on an order?

bmx hubs are spaced 110mm. track is 120, road is 130, mtb is 135

rear bmx hubs are spaced 110mm. track is 120, road is 130, mtb is 135 However, Tree makes hot shit, and if they're being made from scratch, they might be willing to do a special run. You'll have to decide exactly what you want and buy in bulk.

fronts are all 100mm. Nice and easy.

all they would have to do is add larger spacers to their pre-existing hubs, making them what ever spacing width you need.

also making your chainline super shitty. If you're gonna drop the cash, you want them RIGHT.

I see. We'd probably have more luck convincing surly or formula or someone to drill 48 holes in a 130mm hub they already make than to convince tree to cast or machine a wider hub which already has 48 holes in it.

I'll talk to the guy on Friday regardless.

Also, I have since found out that Milwaukee Bicycle Company is experimenting with a 48 hole version of their track hubset. http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=612_618&...

would it be fixed or free? Cassette or freewheel?

profile would probably do a 48 hole hub, but they are almost as expensive as a Phil Wood. They'll make custom hubs for sure.

Will and Tom of Tall Tree Cycles, makers of Steelwool Bicyles, and proud bike polo sponsors are coming out with 48 holed, high flanged hubs and rims very soon. In fact they may have them now that their new shop is open. I've seen the photos. Coloured hubs with mallets etched on the flange. Hot. The following page doesn't have the photos, but they are mentioned.

I saw them tonight and they are sweet. Just came in yesterday. They will have the info up soon.

Sweet! I'll have a back wheel to show off in Madison.

A front-only option would be really nice. 48H in the rear is probably overkill, and everyone can use front hubs regardless of what they ride.

On lucky's comment earlier... never, NEVER buy surly hubs. I tore through one in less than a month. I had to replace the bearings twice and the threads on both sides (fixed/fixed) stripped.

I've got a 48 spoked rear wheel that had been working great. The first night I played on it I broke a spoke due to a pedal in my wheel, but its no big deal... there's still 47 left!

BOOM!

I like your polo.

I would say you had a bad experience, because I know plenty of people who have ridden these hubs for a year or more with no problems. Sucks that the threads stripped, did you try to contact Surly to see if they would warranty it?

OK, no Surly.

On another "I'm not a mechanic" note. I was just looking at tandem hubs, assuming they'd be a little burlier than road or MTN equipment. They may well be, but they are also 145-160 wide. Too big for my MTN frame for sure. Look at all the stuff I'm learning!

surly are worse the worst hubs on the planet 48 hole milwaukee bicycle hubs now for sale check it i just want every one to have nice quality things

The hub body of the surly hubs are not bad, but the locknuts crack.

Spacing 110 / 120 to 135 will play with chain line too much. it's better to crush and realign a rear end for polo, especially if you are going to throw in fork ends to replace vertical dropouts.

BTW: 48h 26" rims will be here Feb-March. Hopefully I'll have a frame to show off all the pimp polo shit by then.

Yeah, the Formula/Dimension/etc. hubs all have weak lock nuts, oddly enough my LBS carries the surly locknuts and I have never had a problem with those. maybe the ones they sell off the hubs are better than the ones included? seems a lot of people have hate for surly hubs, this is definitely the first i have heard of this.i definitely haven't had any problems with the surly hub on my polo bike, and as i said, i know people who have ridden them for a long time without issues. doug/kremin - what issue did you run into with them? did you also strip yours?

i've stripped a surly (lockring threads) and have seen many stripped surlys working as a wrench. i've also had the locknuts crack... the surly wheelset i won a little over a year ago at the midwests ive had to replace the bearings twice and the first thing i did was replace the locknuts with solid generic ones to save myself the headache.

from working in a shop i have replaced countless bearings in surly hubs, i think it has something to do with the support for the axel to much play or something i was there for both of zacks stripping. ive seen quite a few in the shop and there more exspensive then say formula or dimension, the holes in the hub for the spokes are really great though the head sits in really nicely and there tight around the spoke but every thing else about the hub is garbage, but i suppose like all products hit or miss and it sounds like you snaged a decent set

i was trying to get a dimension hub but qbp was out of the wheel i wanted. if i hadn't been working in the shop, i wouldn't have paid the extra, but the extra was still less than a dimension would have cost me anyway. i'll keep an eye on my bearings.

I dunno what spacing these would be, and they are 26" but, how about 140 spoke wheels?

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy.

haha I didnt think about that, these probably weigh more than a brick thats been hollowed out and filled with smaller bricks.

They also probably don't have much tension on them. Lateral rigidity isn't so important to low riders. Pulling a velvet-lined trailer with a boom box in it, however, is.

I talked with the Tree Bicycle Company this weekend. Their suppliers aren't tooled up to do road or mtn spaced 48 hole hubs, and unless they could forsee selling a lot of them (hundreds), it ain't worth setting it up.

No trouble. Milwaukee Bike Co and Steelwool are having them made. I'll get a set of those.
