Liberating Mallet Material
someone brought home a twenty foot section of polyethylene tonight. a couple days ago someone got thirty feet. stacks of the stuff are sitting under a certain bridge named for a certain borough right now. someone said the ride home witha twenty foot mallet head was fun as hell; even cars were scared. someone once saw
Montana ride from the pit to brooklyn with about twelve feet. we want to hear
liberation stories. also, let us know if someone should bring some next time they visit your city.

That stuff is welcome here in LA anytime. Trade puffs for PE!
Someone once rode with 10 feet straped to somebodies 'circus' polo bike, Willamsburg to Astoria (5 miles-ish) in the freakin rain.
A bearded man and a spazz (i'll leave you to figure out who is who) lifted a section of properly metric-sized headpiece from Zürich Switzerland... fit nicely next to my polo bike in the box. thanks Züricher Gasbetrieb!
Any of this stuff like the stuff that alexis uses to make his mallets?

A few months ago, we found the outdoor warehouse for the local gas company near a train yard on the outskirts of town.
Spools and spools of blue HDPE. Slide through the gap in the fence, hack off a few feet, strap it to the top tube for the way home. Easy as taking cheetos from a vegan.

Kremin: I have some yellow 2 inch around the house. Visit Chicago! We can go try and get some more.
In Atlanta I just saw a huge roll of 2" orange and yellow 1 1/4" on an onramp to the highway. We just pulled over and threw about 30 ft of orange and 30 ft of yellow in the back of my truck and drove off with it. I have about 50 orange mallet heads sitting on my coffee table, and the yellow is yet to be processed. Nobody I know here likes 1 1/4" but a lot of the kids from FTL like it, so if anybody needs it just give a holler.

Is that 2" ID or OD? What is the wall thickness?
Can I score a few peices of the 2" orange??

the unpictured yellow is

1/8 " wall thickness
And all of it is wonderful HDPE with the phone number of the georgia DOT printed on it.

never had seen proper mallet sized pipe in pensacola until there were out of town polo players here and the gas company decided to work on the corner down the street from the house and after all of us talking about getting some and never doing anything gus just went down there and asked for some. this is the piece that we love him for leaving behind on its way to get chopped up.

yeah there is no reason to steal it. the gas co. guys are always cool in my experience. just ask them for a scrap piece and you'll walk away with 6 feet or more.

Yep it's HDPE, This stuff I found is made specifically for these electrical contractors who work for the department of transportation. If I were you I'd look for big electrical contracting companies near you and see if you can find out where they have jobs and if they have scrap, because there's always scrap. Also, if you're dying for fun colors, I can ship you some heads, $5 each + shipping.

I'm pretty sure I could make you a few like that. There's always more material just sitting around. You tell me which colors/how many and I'll make it happen. Also if you want the holes I can go ahead and add them, for an extra few dollars, which will save you time and reduce shipping.

Can anyone tell me the difference between red, yellow, and orange "HDPE". Why is some lighter than others? Is it density? Is it wall thickness? This yellow seems stiffer and denser than orange HDPE.
Got media, tournament, or bike polo news? DM me at twitter.com/bikepolo
There should be some info printed in a stripe on the outside of the pipe. It will say, for instance, "Driscoplex 2" HDPE SDR 11 ASTM 3808" You can look up the ASTM info on-line.
What that boils down to is that some HDPE pipe is denser, because it is used to move things (water, gases) under higher pressure than other HDPE pipe which is used for lower pressure duty or just as underground conduit.
"SDR (11 or whatever)" or "Schedule (40 or whatever)" Is two different ways to measure the wall thickness.
The utility uses the yellow for their natural gas piping, so I'll guess that it's the more dense material. The orange stuff I usually see used as conduit on highway construction, so all it's gotta do is keep worms and roots off the wires, probably less dense. The red stuff from Madison is thinner walled than either of those, but still HDPE. S'why it's so light.

Thanks. Makes sense. There is a close up photo of the specifications of this particular pipe. Its "Emergency Gas Pipe, for gas only"
It doesn't acutally say "HDPE" only "PE" in the markings. Click through to flickr and see if you can tell anything.
I got four 6" heads, two 5" heads and a 4.5" out of this piece. Very happy.
Got media, tournament, or bike polo news? DM me at twitter.com/bikepolo
ok...seriously, i'm a nerd...i just got off the phone with an hdpe engineer...sdr (7-32.5) is the wall thickness with 7 being the thickest/heaviest and 32.5 being the thinnest/lightest. an sdr 7-32.5 2" hdpe pipe is actually 2.375" o.d. (outer diameter) with a slightly varying i.d. (inner diameter) determined by wall thickness (7-32.5). according to the engineer the colors are strictly aesthetic preference (except black which has carbon added for uv protection) and the only other relevant number is the density level...the higher the number the higher the density...for example "pe4710" is the densest (highest impact resistance) vs "pe3406" or "pe3608" and then even lower into the mdpe range...the engineer i spoke to was ridiculously knowledgeable and super nice...was excited to look up bike polo on youtube...younger guy who rides mountain bikes...might be a future polo player, hahaha.
FTL BIKE POLO...
Great research! I'm a little confused though - could you explain the 7-32.5 numbers a little more? What are the units? Is this saying that the depth of the pipe wall is 7units to 32.5 units thick?
Thanks!
Sasha
SDR is an industry formula for measuring wall thickness as a ratio of the pipe diameter. This way a 2" SDR 11 pipe will have the same pressure rating and other engineering characteristics as a 40" SDR 11 pipe. So the units after "SDR" are the standard dimension ratio.
The formula is: pipe size divided by the SDR number equals the wall thickness.
2" SDR 11 pipe has a wall thickness of 2.375 (the actual outside diameter of the pipe) divided by 11 which equalls .21", almost a quarter of an inch.
2" SDR 17 has a wall thickness of 2.375 divided by 17, which equalls .14" a little more than one eighth of an inch.

Thanks!
someone found a good amount of the red stuff here! hoooray!
its SDR 13.5
anyone know what the madison stuff is?
how many feet do you have, ryan? can you save me a 5" cut of it?
---------------------------
carve. smash. eat shit.
---------------------------
carve. smash. eat shit.
The red Madison stuff is Schedule 40. It's a different standard of measurement for a different industry.
The wall thickness for 2" Schedule 40 pipe is .15"
The wall thickness for 2" SDR13.5 pipe is .176"
The wall thickness for 2" SDR11 pipe is .216" This is what most of us are using.
So if a blank, un-drilled out, 5.5" length of 2" SDR11 pipe weighs 100 units, a 5.5" length of your SDR13.5 pipe would weigh 83 units, and the same amount of the Schedule 40 pipe would weigh 70 units.

Just got off the phone with a sales rep for a HDPE company. Apparently anything called schedule 40 is a PVC pipe. Now I'm really confused. Can someone please give me the numbers on the Madison Red?
Oh, and the colors don't mean anything, that's specific color coding for each job, although there might be some common uses.
So if I have read and followed everything correctly, the magic Madison Red (schedule 40) is SDR16. Can anyone confirm or deny? I'm trying to track some down on the West coast and the more info I can come up with the better. Thanks.
If you find it I'm stealing 8" from you.

fyi,
Madison red is either SDR 15.5 or 17, SDR sizes are standard across the continent.
And if one really wants this stuff, just find your local municipal pipe supplier and ask for "2" diameter HDPE SDR 17 pipe, and you will get the lightest 2" diameter hdpe available. 2" diameter hdpe isn't available in any thinner wall thickness. Probably have to buy 10 feet minimum but if you ask for a scrap piece they may have some available. My local supplier will sell it to me for approx. $2.25 / foot but requires a minimum 20 foot lenght to be orderd / shipped.
For municipal purposes it usually comes in black because it has a built in UV inhibiter in the formula which makes it black. The coloured pipe is typical for gas to easily identify as pipe not to fuck with because it might go boom!

Ive been on the phone for hours trying to track down some HDPE SDR 17. The only guy I found that thought he could get us some, says the distributor is out, and no one is planning on making anymore, anytime soon. I'm trying to come up with new ideas to get some. Will your pipe supplier ship to Seattle? if so can I get their contact info?
This should have been easy, and is driving me bonkers!!! Any suggestions?
Speaking to the original post msg;
My gas company contact called me up the other week and said "hey, they're going to throw a bunch of the 2" diameter poly pipe out, do you still want some?" Hell ya! He dropped of 100 feet of the yellow pipe! Thanks Brad - I'm pipe rich!
So look for me at tournaments in the pacific northwest, I'm giving this shit away! I cut 50 feet of it up into 5.5" long pieces on my chop saw, so it's good to go.

Has anyone tried Medium Density? I was told by a friend who works at a gas company that a lot of gas companies are switching to that instead of the High Density.
Not sure what it means in their world but in ours it would probably mean lighter and shorter lived. I don't think this is a huge problem, just need to get comfortable with replacing head more often.
