Brakes...........
I have a freewheel with a front brake and it doesn't seem to work to well. I wanted to know what brake setup people are using? brand? front vs rear? What seems to work the best.
I run freewheel front brake, and I love it. I've gotten used to just sliding back off of the saddle to make sure I don't endo on sharp stops. But it's a big debate in polo. There's a thread about it here.

yeah i looked at those posts before posting and there was a lot of shit talking but not a whole lot of specifics on what is a good brand. danya what brand front brake are you using? I have some no name which sucks and barely stops me. I want to buy a new front brake but wanted to find out what people find is good quality for polo before I do so.

I'm using some no name brand as well- whatever comes standard on the Walmart Shwinn mountain bike. The difference is probably a functional problem. How short is the brake line? How well adjusted are the calipers? How well lined up are the brake pads? For that matter, what condition are all of the aforementioned parts in? Any of that can have a big effect on stopping power, and it sounds like your problem is there, since you're not complaining about going over the handlebars like most people on front brake do.

The older XT brakes and any XTR shimano v-brakes with the paralell push mechanism are great. They are super powerful and offer great modulation. They are pricey new, but can commonly be found used for less.
I whole heartedly agree with this, I'm using an XTR vbrake at the moment and the stopping power is unreal.
Still trying to decide on whether to go for a diskbrake on the new bike or just stick with the XTR.
Cane Creek Direct Curve 3, with matching lever. Rear only. I had slamon Kool Stop pads on it, but had to remove them after a couple of games because the bike stopped a little TOO well.

Avid BB7 disc brake on the rear. Works great, needs a littel bit of babying. I play in the rain this time of year though which is a big driving factor.

That shit 's legit as fuck!
Random front brake, random back brake. Dirty harry lever with dragonfly gyro cable mod for dual brake system. Odysee linear cables to elimate friction. Dual brakes are the only way. get on it.

Not picking on you, Jared, just wanted to make a point. Linear cables do not eliminate friction. The housing is stiffer, so you increase pull. If anything, they increase friction, especially, if the cable is severely bent or given the chance to rub against a barrel adjuster.
fair enough, point taken. What i meant is that, no matter what way you bend or how many times, they stil have a consistant pull. I like them...but good point.

I have a MKE Bruiser that utilizes u-brakes, both front and rear. Currently, I run rear only with a set of Odyssey Evo IIs, Animal linear cable, and an Odyssey trigger lever. Personally, I think these style brakes are best due to my BMX background. I've used the same set-up with caliper brakes in the past, but I think they're the worst brakes because of the lack of adjustability in spring tension. Have yet to try a dual brake set-up.
Avid Single Digit 7 v-brakes with matching levers (Speed Dial 7). These are super affordable and work great.

I'm using the same brakes. Canondale lever that a friend gave me and Problem Solvers 2in1 (both brakes one lever). I've had the brakes for about 6 months and they're great. The 2in1 is new but I'm loving it also. Braking with both wheels is really saving my tires.
Word, I also have the Problem Solvers doubler but I've been too lazy to install it. Hey great game last night, we kicked some ass!

i took some beads off my nokon system, oiled my cable, and put into practice some of the ancient bmx wisdom on adjusting U-brakes that TimA shared with me in CoMo... my brakes work awesome now. ubrakes are strong and everything is tucked in and shielded from mallet blows and getting shredded on the pavement after a wreck.

oh, also.. odyssey mono lever, nokon cable system, fly u-brake in the rear... on a Milwaukee Bruiser: http://www.bikepolo.ca/bike/joemke/milwaukee-bicycle-co-bruiser-small

Haha! Glad it worked for you. Now, you can skid like a champ! One more piece of "wisdom". Make sure the brake studs are well greased before sliding the brake arms in place, to decrease friction as much as possible, but I'm sure you've done that already.
1980's called, they want your canti's back! hehe
nah, to each their own!
hey matt (or TimA for that matter aka MR Brake Wizard)
ben's has some shimano BL-R550 brake levers in stock now how do those compare to the opdyssey monolever?
