Long-lasting brake housing. What are my options?

I currently run my brake cable through linear housing, but I always tend to pull it through the ferrule seated in my lever. I'm basically left with the wire pulled through said ferrule and the rest of the housing squished, accordian-style. I've contemplated Nokon housing, but I'm not sure if it's worth the cost. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Bit by bit housing. or just change your housing regularly, or use a stepped ferule. you said your using linear housing? why? that is for shifter lines, and probably why its stressing the end of the housing, that stuff is only meant to be under a little bit of stress, that is why it works so well for index shifting.

Yo Dawg I heard you like redundancies so we got a PIN number for your PIN

Linear housing is used quite a bit, for those of us that still run brakes, in the BMX world. The pull is amazing and you can spin your bars with out it triggering the brakes. But it's quite the departure from BMX to polo, because of the heavy braking associated with the latter. I might just have to change housing out more frequently and look for some stepped ferrules you mentioned. Thanks!

change cable housing frequently, bring pre-cut lengths to tournaments. a $20 jagwire brand cable kit lasts me a year.

I bought a jagwire kit a few weeks ago from a shop only because i had a $10 off anything coupon. The kit is nice because it comes with one long coil of housing instead of two precut lengths, so I'll be able to get three lengths of housing for my rear brake.

I still have a coil of really cheap housing that works but it feels like shit compared to the jagwire and it doesn't last nearly as long as better housing I've used.

I recently put on a set of Cane Creek Direct Curve brakes -- no noodle involved. One less thing to break. So far, so good.

Im using these also. Not as much power as say an old school XTR, but plenty.

Best brake housing?
Nokon. Period.

Mom was a plow; dad, a bulldozer... duh.

I had the same issues with housing using Odyssey a couple years ago.. and predictably, everyone else that used that stuff had the same issues.

I tried Nokon and that stuff was awesome, for a while. It is not designed to be used on a brake that is jammed on every 3 seconds. What happened to me is that my cable eventually "sawed" through the bead closest to the lever ferrel. The solution is to remove the bead and cinch up the cable or to replace the bead.. but by that time the plastic liner was fubar'd anyways.

I then started using regular Jagwire and replacing it frequently, which works...

Recently, I'm using Yokozuna Reaction scraps that Kremin collects from the bike shop and so far so good. It is ultra stiff and strong and comes with the most overbuilt heavy duty steel ferrels that eliminate the housing pulling through the back of the ferrel problem too.

x2 on the Yokozuna. Better than Nokon. Never thought I'd say that.

I'll have to check that out!

Animal Bikes has special ferrules made out aluminum and CNC machined that work really well, but I think you only can get them with their linear cable.

they are extra long and have an internal conical shape that help to clear the outer from the cable

I use those ferrules frequently. Fly bikes also has some really nice ones.
