Not paying retail price ;)
Nokon Cable Housing, is it worth it?
I know I've seen it on a slight few other polo bikes, and I wanted to ask before buying into it. Is it any more durable than conventional housing? My bike will take PLENTY of bashes and bar whips in a heated game, does this stuff stand up any better than conventional housing, or is it better (cheaper) to just wear through the normal stuff and replace it as needed. I'm running dual v's, or else I'd just install the front cable through the steer tube and be happy.
I'm running it and it's really nice. I picked it up used and there's no telling how many bikes it was on before mine. The housing will probably out last my frame and then I'll move it to the next bike. It's a nice flexible upgrade. If you can afford it, get it.
Housing kinks at the lever where the ferrule meets the lever. Good brass ferrules are definitely worth it. I have a slight kink on a relatively new Paul dual lever -- but it's been there several games now and hasn't been a problem.
Would expensive housing prevent this non problem??
Probably not, but can I get some in green?
I've used that stuff before, but not on a polo bike. It's a lot of little pieces and expensive. Also, when you eventually need to change your cable you don't get to just throw it out like the regular stuff (yeah throw-away society!), you get to clean it.
The benefits I remember were being able to make the housing a little bit shorter than with regular housing because it wouldn't pull the cable as bad when it got wound up/kinked, and it was a little lighter (for the weight weenies).
Not enough functional benefit for me. But, this is coming from a guy who has an XTR crank on his polo bike.
Just get it, if you're thinking about it you might as well. My brakes work better now. It's pricey but worth the money.
I have this housing on a dual v-brake set up, and love it. The brake feel is really crisp, and stupid strong. In a crash or mallet hook it wont kink and bind like normal housing. If you can afford it do it.
Keep your standards low, and morale high.
I'm curious: Since you can "thread" the beads in whatever way you want, does Nokon housing allow you to do any number of separate cable lengths?
I'm asking this because Nokon housing is expensive and I've been thinking about splitting the price with another player. Would Nokon housing allow us to make 2 bikes? Are we going to fall short on something like cablestops or something?
you are going to run short on pieces. get the extension kit and some liners save some money.
you won't get enough housing pieces to run two dual brake setups.
I measured my setup: less than 30 inches (I have cable stops at the front and back of my top tube).
On the Nokon website, it says their housing is 59 inches. So I think I'd be OK in terms of length if I want to make two bikes.
From what I gather, I could make as many short lengths as I want. Is that right?
you'd think so...
you need an end piece at each end or the housing will kink.
It's just a flat ended ferrel type piece. Not sure if you could replace that with a regular one.
I barely had enough pieces to run just my brakes(w/ cable stops) so I wouldn't plan on trying to split it with another.
Like I said earlier if you want to save money, buy a roll of liner and a couple extension kits.

you'd have to kink a lot of housing to make it worth the retail price difference. but i'm curious to hear what others think.
