Body armor

I'd like to hear some input on knee pads for polo. Any advice about hard cap versus soft? Good brands, styles, etc? I landed on top of my knee again last week, this time injuring a bursa sac around my kneecap, so I think it might be time for me to invest in some gear.

Thanks,

Jill

I'm in the market for some knee/shin guards. I generally don't have problems with big impacts with the ground, just knees/shins coming in contact with mallets, bikes, and boards.

I had a similar accident/knee problem. I've been running with some triple-8 hard shell bmx pads ever since, and they've saved me a couple of times- 4 straps, so they do a good job of staying in place. It's kind of leg shape dependent- try a couple on and see what fits.

I'm thinking about picking up some combo knee-shin pads for cooler weather and tournaments.

I had some crappy downhill MTB pads to protect the tattoos on my legs, but one day I fell and landed on my knee and cracked the knee guard in half. I'm really glad I had them on.

Now I have some Reebok hockey pads. I really like them a lot.

TOO BULKY!

no fuckin' way. hockey shin pads are perfect for polo. if you can skate in them you can cycle in them.

We have a player in portland that plays with this same gear... he seems to like it..

to save your ink, you got to be kidding me. lame

what's lame about this? makes perfect sense to me...

please explain how wanting your tattoos to look good and not all scarred up is lame. their would be nothing more disrespectful to the artist than not taking care of your tattoo.

alright, lames not the word, vain. and there is nothing wrong with that. just kinda cute and neat not underground and RAW

i don't see vanity in this either.

if i were to go to a painter and buy a painting, i wouldn't let it sit in the sun. i would try my best to preserve the piece of art.

the vanity part is when you attache that art to yourself.

i wish i could be as raw and underground as you...

you should look at the post under the mallet hacking section for more insight

i'll look that up right away.

any other pointers on being raw and underground for those of us who aren't you?

edit: back to the topic of protecting tattoos. the tattoos on my arms have scars all over them and my artist smacked me when he saw them. it wasn't fun. one of the scars is from landing on somebody's brake lever and slicing through my forearm. the other is from landing on the boards.

so i just found this underground street artist that you have probably never heard of. i'm going to commission a painting from him. would it be more raw to just have him paint the side of a building and let it weather in the sun, or should i get it on canvas and bring it inside? i need your insight...

what does underground mean to you? this is the thing, if you want to cover you tatoos, thats fine, if you want to call tatoos art that fine. not all ink = art, and that whole fucking world of tatoos is full of shit, and some gems, but wearing pads doesnt make you a preservationalist. and yes i kinda think its a little bit of a joke, but hey man obviosly your not laughing so sorry, im still goina sniicker if you dont mind.

I got a good laugh from it too. Just because our opinions aren't exactly the same doesn't mean I can't find what you are saying funny.

I agree that the tattoo world is full of shit with a few gems. But that can be said about anything.

to be honest it was the first i heard that scraps could wreck tattoos, you just got to go deeper man.

I just purchased some SixSixOne mtn biking kneepads, and am going to try them out tonight on the court. They don't seem too bulky.

Some of our best players wear soccer shin guards regularly and swear by them. We even have a guy who plays in the full knee-shin guard combo that is pictured above. Seems like a smart idea to me, especially since I've caught my knee on my stem too many times to count.

hey all
Ive used the 661 tomcat knee pad, they work reaaly well, not to bulky and they have a hard shell that you can remove, so you can wash the stink out.

yep... the same ones I tried out last night. Felt really comfortable and didn't feel bulky at all. I like 'em.

I was looking at catcher's pads today trying to pawn some shit at the play-it-again sports store. You think those would work? Anybody tried em out?

I use some DH knee/shin pads made by Lizard Skin... work well.

I'm getting knee pads tattooed onto my knees. The tattooed knee pads will then have Black Flag logos tattooed onto them.

I'm just going to get "bike polo ruined my life" tattooed on my arm and ask the doctors for a clear cast.

Ive got some kick ass mace shinguards for dirt jumpin there 100 bucks so i dont think theyd be that great if yer only usin um for polo other than that theyre rad.

As injuries mount up, so does the body armor. I ride with knee/shin guards from Lizard Skins made for BMXing. Comfy with no motion restriction. But the injury I have now is bruised hips. Both sides, each from a different fall on a different day, within a week of each other. Still can't sleep on my side. So I am looking into impact shorts or other underwear with hip pads. There are a shit-ton of them out there. Cant decide between the elderly fall protection or the "lady hips" for cross-dressing.

wait till you all see my madmax style one shoulder protector ...speaking of that anyone have any old footbal shoulder pads? left shoulder only...

i would recommend the "mace" branded armor - the stuff fits great and is not stupidly expensive.

i like to roll with elbow pads so i can grind along the boards in the corners and protect my elbows when the inevitable "slapdown" crash happens.

not sure about knee/shin - but i also havent been whacked on the shins - yet!

oh yall didnt know about robot legs?

ok so what about homemade casts or other solutions?

i dont think my injury would've been prevented from gloves, though i do plan on getting some nice ones. someone put a mallet in front of my front wheel and i flew over the bars, landing first on my right hand, then my knees.

most of the impact was on the underside of my knuckle of my pointer finger. a week later and it's still swollen and hurting. i've taped it up with popsicle sticks as a brace, but i'd like something better.

I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions, besides just going to the doctor.

go to walgreens and get a finger splint (with the foam padding)... ice for the swelling is a no brainer but you should've iced it almost immediately.
or just cut it off

make the drive to canada and impersonate a canadian. it's not too hard eh? free medical.

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

yea i should've iced it immediately but wanted to wait for a ride home so i drank beer instead. yea, opposite effects, but it hurt real bad and there was still good polo to watch. i got a brace from walgreens but it's not long enough. thanks though. if i cut it off i'll let you know. i think i'll just become left handed instead, that's kinda like being canadian. jk jk i'd love to be canadian right now.

http://sixsixone.com/sixsixone_bike.aspx has all the protective gear you'll ever need from gloves to hip padded shorts to knee/shin guards.

661 is decent. Prince point dot com has a lot of protective gear on sale this month as well.

craigslist is always great for used gear. i got a $40 pair of one strap hockey knee/shin guard for $15.
good cheap way to experiment with what you need. or check out a Play it Again Sports (if its in your area) its a great used sporting goods store.

give blood. play polo.

If you have a play it again sports you can dig thought eh dumpsters and find all sorts of good shit. i found a ton of soccer shin gaurds, some hockey gloves and pads and some baseball shin gaurds.
mostly used to make mad max armor but, i bet it could be useful for polo.

I got some mcdavid hexagonal pads that I wear under my jeans. I've taken 2 blows to them and didn't feel a thing. If you want something light, I highly recommend those.

awesome, ijust ordered a pair and then saw this
