lacrosse gloves?
I really want some awesome protective gloves. i have a set of hockey gloves but i dont like the fact that you cant move your thumb, i played with one on my mallet hand for allmost to months thinking i would just adapt but i still find it frustrating so i removed some of the plastic inserts and padding and it still was as mobile is i would like, i was looking up lacrosse sticks for shafts on ebay and i came across lacrosse gloves i was wondering if any one has any exceperiance with theses at all i also found that the womens gloves are pretty minimal looks like just enough padding and tons of mobility
i know you are looking for protection but just wanted to comment on what kev said about gloves wearing down. i find that the two biggest "wear" points on my gloves are on the thumb and the middle finger. i have been taping my gloves at these points and that seems to do the trick.

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...
Ditto, I'm using the mec neoprene gloves and adding an iron on mending patch from the supermarket to the inside and outside of the right thumb.
But I was wearing these gloves when I broke my hand (brick wall, not bike contact)
I do like the look of the lighter lacrosse gloves shown above.
Just found them in Australia: http://www.stx.com.au/products.asp?Group_ID=7
I was thinking of gloves over the weekend and would be interested in seeing the ideal pair of polo gloves, where one is designed for holding onto the bike and padded appropriately, and the other is designed to play with a mallet, again, padded appropriately, not necessarily the same.

its only a matter of time before my paws get mangled, these are a good idea even though they may take a bit of getting used to and probably get a bit sweaty on a hot day.
I was thinking about some new gloves after my thumb was smashed with a mallet the other night. Anyone tried these Fox Bomber Gloves?
http://www.foxracing.ca/shop.php?sale=0&lineCode=M&sexCode=M&catCode=&pa...
They are Motocross gloves not Mountain biking so they are a bit more burly looking.
Seems to have good protection everywhere except the thumb. I wonder if the molded Carbon knuckles would impede stick handling.

Ya Kenny, a few people that play here in Seattle use those and love them. The price is the only issue, but they seem like a good investment
Last couple of trips I've looked into gloves and never settled on anything. I've also trashed my left (bar hand) index finger middle knuckle on said trips. It's still sore in a fist. I'm looking for breathability and protection in specific areas. My wear spots on my right (mallet hand) are in the heel of the palm, mid index, and thumbprint.
is STX the way to go?

If you are in Canada you can get lecross gloves from canadian tire for like 50 bucks. they are not high end but the same price as a good pair of leather glove. They also have the option of a solid thumb or a free thumb like a glove, so you can still have full hand movement but get a full grip and still have the solid thumb blocking on the out side. Plus they com up on your wrists so taking a slap shot no longer hurts like hell when you are in net.
I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!
Both the Fox Bomber and the Sixsixone carbon knuckle gloves suck. The palms lasted about a week. The rest fell apart very quickly thereafter. Hell, the Fox split when I put them on.
The pair that's lasted the longest for me has been the Race Face Diabolus. Tough knuckle protection (but not stiff carbon) and the longest lasting palms of any I've tried. The thumb finally went but it took some time.
I am curious about the Strangler. That'll probably be my next try. (Kev, a brief review? How do they breathe? Stretch? Lifespan?) The Brooklyn Machine works gloves look badass too.

Ive been playing with those for a couple of years now, price is def an issue. Especially when the thumbs wear down as fast as any other normal glove out there. I can say for CERTAIN though that the PC protection they offer has saved my pretty little fingers on more than one occasion.
edit-I use the Unabomber gloves, without fishing through all the propaganda, I think they are step down (in protection and price) form those you linked to.
I rock the bombers.
They are sure to save your skin.
lacrosse glove palms will wear through eventually as well. i used to just cover the holes with tape and keep using them though, some guys didn't even bother patching the holes (although rules said you had to).
unfortunately you're probably not gonna find many used pairs around, and those that you do find are probably naaaasty.
edit: stx, warrior and brine are the big lax glove makers. they're all good.
edit 2: cheap gloves
hey kremin I checked out lacrosse gloves a while back in a few stores around here. The ladies lacrosse gloves had less padding but enough to protect you: the tops of your fingers are totally covered and yes your fingers would still have mobility. the material on palms don't have much padding and would probably wear thru if you wipe out on rough pavement a lot. they even cost less than the regular lacrosse gloves. but even the XL of women's gloves were too small for my Man Hands.

Hey K-Man i picked up a pair of lacrosse gloves a couple of weeks ago for the upcoming season. I can tell you that they are WAY more comfy and WAY WAY flexible than hockey gloves. Full movement of every finger and the thumb. Im going to try them out today and see how they work. They were fine for just ball handling around the living room.

a good idea with specific wear areas on fingers is tape the gloves in those spots when they're brand new instead of waiting till they wear through. then you can just wear the tape down and keep replacing it, while the glove itself remains unharmed.
Home Depot "Handyman" gloves are my personal favorite. They don't have any extra padding for knuckle-thwacks, but they last the longest in palm and thumb spots.
I saw these last week while picking up hockey balls
knuckle padding is decent and the grip on the palm will take skin off if you slap someone! They are football lineman's gloves. Now that it's the off season and they've been discontinued on the manufacturer's site, I am hoping for a price drop. 50 clams is a bit steep.

Has anyone used motorcycling gloves?
Most racing gloves will have some sort of carbon kevlar or thermoplastic knuckle armor. Having worn them before, it seems that they have the same ease of mobility as regular bicycling gloves. Icon's gloves are what all the street racers seem to wear.
(I just use BMX gloves for now, but I'm not nearly that aggressive)
i do. they work like a dream. strong. durable. comfortable. tactile. and padding on all the knuckles and many places in-between.
Now that I've reread the entire thread, I guess Kenny D already addressed this.
what about for summer gloves? currently i just wear whatever-my ccx gloves that are so worn out or wool gloves, mostly so my hands don't freeze. i fall less these days-having mastered dabbing  but i still want skin protection, i already have some concrete in my palm from a bike crash(non polo related) and some in my chin(polo related) and i'd like to keep my hands safe. is there anything out there that's light, full fingered and has some awesome padding in the right spots?
There is a lacrosse store in one of the tawny suburbs of St Louis which I visited this weekend. I got to try on a mess of different gloves for men's and women's lacrosse, field hockey, and some other field sport that requires padding. A lot of them seemed to have mesh in the palm. Great for sweat, bad for handlebars.
I tried on helmets and some different body armor, too. But all I bought was these. The staff was super helpful and interested in bike polo. Especially in those aspects where gear crosses over. They couldn't believe that some of us play with no pads or helmets what-so-ever.

Has anyone used these Troy Lee Design gloves?
http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/GL400A03-Troy+Lee+Designs+Pro+Ape...
They are silly expensive but so is a broken hand (Damon these might have saved you). Could be way too sweaty but might make a good winter polo glove.
I've seen the fox bomber gloves, they look great in all the padded areas but the palm and thumb look really wimpy, cheap synthetic leather crap. If only it was full grain leather. I'm thinking of getting a pair anyhow and cutting up an old piece of leather to glue to/ reinforce the stress areas. There must be some kind of fabric glue that would do the job.

Nice find Kenny! I think I'll have to get some as well. I have used several glove brands and I can honestly say Troy Lee gloves last the longest and feel the best. Kenny are you going to the worlds? shoot me an email man.
If your not looking for protection of your hand, just want good grip. you could try belay gloves for rock climbing, they are full leather palms, Should be able to stand up to the pressure.

Having had my thumb broken 4-5 weeks back I've invested in some lacrosse gloves.
Whilst playing another player came round towards the ball on the outside, took a full power shot on the ball and the shaft of their mallet crushed my thumb into my own handlebar. The unpadded gloves I was wearing did nothing to protect against this.
When I received the gloves in the post my first thought was that they'd be far too bulky and feel like they were always in the way. Having now played with them for a few days of pickup and some seroius league games I can say they're quite the opposite. After the first day of play I now don't even notice that I'm wearing them. They were the cheaper end of lacross gloves (40ish GBP as opposed to 100+) so it remains to be seen how well they'll last.
I would recommend them to anyone that has considered them, especially if their concerns were regarding how bulky they are (The palms are actually very thin as the glose don't seem to inhibit finger dexterity in any way.
Brine makes some pretty nice ones. I only play with one on my mallet hand, so I won't invest in a super expensive pair just to only use one. I got my current pair used for $10 on CraigsList - Brine Spartan lacrosse gloves: http://www.alllacrosse.com/images/pads/gloves/brine/spartan.gif
However, after trying on some of what the other guys in our club have purchased, I have found that I really like these Mission Soldier hockey gloves: http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/hockeymonkey_2085_286437107

Some people in boston use girls lacross gloves, which have more back of the hand & thumb padding than bike gloves. A potential option if you don't have big hands. I tried the guys lacross glove, but didn't like the bulky cuff & the mesh palm. Currently using troy lee design apex gloves- comfy, durable, & as protective as bike gloves get.
I recently stumbled across some mylec roller hockey gloves which might be a good alternative- http://tsa.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/p4775223reg.jpg
They seem like they'll offer good protection (particularly over the thumb) without too much bulk.
fuck you howl where were you yesterday? too cool to play in the freezing rain with the rest of us?
Warrior lacrosse gloves are beautiful. Don't even notice them on your hands, super padding and protection. I absolutely love them and i'm pretty sure a couple others out there will agree.

After getting my thumb and middle finger bent back this weekend I went and bought some lacrosse gloves to try, and I can say right away I was hooked on them. Once I got use to grabbing the brake with the bigger glove I was good to go. Also I was finding my shots were a bit harder with the glove on..... but that could just be me.
I've played with Lacrosse gloves for a couple years now. On my second pair. Love em. lots of mobility, lots of protection.
These [women's] lacrosse gloves look pretty good. Less bulky then men's gloves. The "Tempest" looks pretty sweet.

I play with the Tempest women's lacrosse gloves. The palm material is pretty thin. I've worn a hole through the mallet hand thumb in 2-3 months of use. The level of padding vs dexterity is just right for me, though.

what is up with Australia and shipping, don't they make things there? I mean like anything but sand and koala bears.
Yo Dawg I heard you like redundancies so we got a PIN number for your PIN
uh ya, last i heard the US wasn't making much these days either, plus it's further away from China than Australia, so shipping should more.
Not 100% sure of all the reasons. But the cost and availability of lots of stuff here is because of distance _and_ the fact that we're such a small market, the economies of scale aren't there.
I've heard there's also some taxes on sporting goods that aren't on other items, making bike stuff even more expensive. Apparently if you sell bike shoes with the cleats installed they'd be taxed in aohther category, not sure if this is an old wives tale, but sporting stuff here is definetly more expensive.

http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4017103&CA... Just bought these as suggested by Mr.Do. With total free movement in the thumb, the best balances of protection and flexibility I have seen yet. The palms are likely going to go quick but your local shoe shop will be able to throw a quality piece of leather in there.
Any ideas on what size to get?
I've been looking to score some lacrosse gloves and sizes range from 10'' to 13''. The only information I've been able to get is that the glove should be measured from the tip of you fingers to the beginning of you elbow pad (???).
*Somebody please think of the children!!*
Just landed a pair of size 11's [Franklin SX 150] and suspect 12's may have been better, they're plenty wide but the fingers seem a bit short. The standard for glove measurement is this:
http://www.glove.org/glovemeasure.php
But that would have got me a size 10...and then I suspect they'd only reach halfway down my palm and my fingers would be trying to pop out the ends.
Helpful?
finally got my gloves!
Really comfy, although a tiny bit tight. I guess they give a bit with time.
No more black nails or bleeding fingers!!

Got me some Brine Notorious gloves. Question, where do they get worn the most? Might preemptively tape them up to get them to last as long as possible. Also found some basic soft knee and elbow pads for $8, useful till I get some 4x knee/shin pads.

Joker had his girlfriend sew an old inner tube on the thumb and palm of the glove. play enough and you will see where the glove will wear and tear. I will try to get him to post pics of his gloves and how they were patched.

paul nyc knows but he don't come around here too much. maybe you can give him a holler. menace? or do you play with boys' hockey gloves? max from madison?
i agree, they look cool. i'm also sick of going through the thumbs of my mallet hand glove. so far the most long lasting gloves i've used are knog stranglers---leather with and quality sewing. but not cheap.
