yea and polo is more cardio than horse racing. thes fog and smear with grease. plus they scratch. i have a nice pair i was given that i just use for sunday afternoon polo. but nothing serious
eyewear / safety glasses
The helmet thread has now shifted towards eyewear, but i think glasses deserve their own thread so i'm starting this one. I mean, there are some really geeky glasses that people are wearing out there that deserve attention. Also there have already been numerous eye injuries. If i'm not mistaken the guy y'all can blame for popularizing polo in Milwaukee quit on account of a mallet to the eye. I've seen plenty of other mallet/cheek, mallet/forehead combos. it's all fun and games until...
I for one cannot stand wearing sunglasses or anything that disturbs my peripheral vision, i play low to the ground and even the frame across the top of cycling glasses gets in the way.
i was thinking about going the hockey helmet route and getting a Oakley visor à la Dany Heatley (about $40 on canadian craigslists) or Paul's setup, worn at left by Dalrumplestiltskin, but 1) i think they get scratched pretty easily 2) that's a lot of hardware to haul around 3) i'd like a solution that works for the street 4) i already have a $20 multi-impact helmet that works.
I've had racquetball glasses sorta like these for winter/snow riding but their elastic was uncomfortable, and as the reviewer over there on the Canadian Tire website complains, there are blind spots and peripheral issues.
I think that the way to go is with rounded safety glasses, but they're usually not very well made cause they're built for people to stand around doing lab experiments, or putting holes through shooting range targets. Javier showed me some nice ones a couple weeks ago that were super rounded, what was that brand? you said they were $9.99?
What else do people use?
they won't stand up to much abuse. also they're not protective, i think they're just for keeping mud out of your face. www.yellowjersey.org sells them to winter bikers but i wouldn't bother even for that purpose.
squash goggles are the best i have come across . they don't fog up as easily as work safety goggles .
I seem to remember oakley coming out with sunnies designed for time-trialling a couple of years ago that had no frames. anyone know what im talking about?
If your mum gave you 2 dollars to buy three ice creams, how many ice creams could you buy before you get shot in the back with a harpoon?

not sure if these are what you are thinking about - but i have a set of clear Zeros that are great. no frame, dont fog, very light, and sticky enough to not fall off.
they are delicate though due to the lack of a frame - but they are great. no blind spots and no fog. and they work for protecting my eyes as i took a mallet in the face last week and just kept on playing. thankfully, no scatches from the mallet contact.
oakley also makes the "conduct" which is frameless and i have a set of those too but they are kinda dark if the sun aint shinin'.
oakleys are probably one of the more expensive options but they work.

these are like mine. (mine have some red detailing but basically that's them)
got them at city sports
i haven't had issues with fogging... basically i forget i'm wearing them most of the time.
damn, city sports doesn't ship to canada...
TOP CENTER 4-EVA
Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...
i called their canajun distributor, they don't distribute these in canada. amazon (US) has them for $7.
If you guys get enough Canadians to want to buy, I can buy a bunch, ship to Kev, and he can ship out. That is, if Kev is willing to do that as well...

You still liking these glasses now that its warming up?
If you live in MN, IA, MO, WI, IL, MI, IN, KY, and OH why not join the Midwest Club page?
I picked up some safety glasses, and I haven't had issues with fogging, more like sweat dripping into them and at night, I get a wicked glare from the lights. I think I'll get used to that eventually though.
I talked with the guys at Rudy Project, and they say that their impactX lenses will be able to withstand a mallet to the face. Expensive, but so is eye surgery.

Check out the Adidas Evil eye!
They work great!
Yesterday, I found a pair of those Ektelon Mirage glasses at Dick's for $9.99 (see photo in the post above), and they seem like they are going to work out great. Comfortable, good peripheral vision, and I like that the entire lens piece is clear (i.e. you don't look like a total goober wearing them).

I'm gonna change the setup and attach the oakley visor from the side. really want the mirrored one, but it's impractical.
i also think any of the cheapo work/gun range/clear plastic safety glasses are a solid inexpensive solution. what
I am thinking about getting some cheap Korean safety glasses while I'm here, but I don't know if I would trust them to not splinter into my eyes. I guess I'd have to buy a pair just to test.

My cousin works for the highway department and they hand out safety goggles like candy. You can also get them dirt cheap in boxes from places like Grainger. They come in all designs, clear, yellow and iridium.

BRINGING THE RUCKUS
Grainger is a good thought. They actually might be a great supplier for all sorts of polo materials.

i know these are meant for women's lacrosse, but the design is quite interesting. the Cascade Iris is built to withstand a 60mph shot. doesn't lacrosse use a similar ball? anyways

what do you guys think about the caged goggles?
these are another brand that are actually quite inexpensive ~ $25
