Doing Some Math

I've been interested in doing a bit a of statistical analysis on what people ride on. Since polo bikes are so diverse, I'm thinking about using the Gain Ratio calculation as an overall metric.

http://sheldonbrown.com/gain.html

I'm making a Google doc spreadsheet, so if you'd like to contribute to it, email me: alias(dot)s(dot)tagami(at)gmail(dot)com and I'll send you an invite to contribute. Or simply post the following here in the thread, and I'll add it myself.

-Wheel size
-Tire size
-Crank length
-Chain-ring # of teeth
-Rear cog #of teeth
-Freewheel or Fixed

After I have a large enough sample, I'll post the results. I'm sure others have done this before, but I kind of like being able to play with the data myself.

Thanks for the numbers!

I'm going to poll my club on Thursday. I also plan to track region. We play on a really small court in DC. I wonder ho much that plays into the engineering choices? I'll try to post the updated stats as I get a larger sample.

I've also been paging through the bike section here on LoBP and entering any bikes that have all the desired dimensions. 14 entries so far. I'll post first results once I've got to 50 bikes. That's still a small sample, but it's a good start.

...it might be hard to capture this reliably, but court size dictates these numbers to a large extent. i would imagine you would find a correlation there.

I believe you're correct. I've been noting what club a person has listed by their profile. I'll present any local correlations that I can when I get enough data.

Pro-friendly bike polo!

This thread should be called "doing some meth". i'll add to my LOBP todo list a table view of the 400+ bikes on this site, which might save you some time. don't count on this anytime too soon tho.

Uh, make that 600 bikes...

http://leagueofbikepolo.com/bikes/table

i'll add tire size as a field soon.

That would be awesome. Tires, wheels, and cranks would be awesome. A boy can dream. In the mean time, I thumb through the bikes section and try to find posts that have the needed info.

If it's ~600 bikes right now, I should probably get about 60 bikes instead of 50 so I have a 10% sample. Granted, the more the better.

Thanks for all the replies. This along with other entries emailed to me, I have some numbers. I'll continue to accept entries, and let the spreadsheet grow. Note: I didn't have any entries by people who play fixed on 26in wheels.

The Average Gain Ratio: 3.33

Here are the mode builds. I did one for each type of wheel.

Free - 26in x 1.5in wheels/tires - 170mm cranks - 35:20 (1.8) gear ratio - 3.43 gain ratio (+0.08% over the average)

Free - 700c x 32c wheels/tires - 170mm cranks - 32:22 (1.59) gear ratio) - 3.42 gain ratio (+0.03% over the average)

Helpful thread...I building up and needed some good comparisons.
