Capping ABS?
I'm sort of a newbie to mallet making. I recently purchased the ABS raw head from Fixcraft: http://www.bluecollardistro.com/fixcraft/product_info.php?products_id=54...
I'm trying to figure out the best way to cap this joint. I've been doing some reading on the forum, but can't figure out what's best.
I tried buying one of the caps from Milwaukee: http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1780&pro...
Not the same dimensions. Wasn't a tight fit and I would have to do a bunch of tinkering to get the outside diameter the same, but still, the inner diameter isn't the same.
Any better suggestions? Should I go with a rod from McMaster-Carr?
If somebody made some videos of capping a mallet, that would be awesome, indeed.
Actually contact NOD from AZ. He sales a fussed/capped abs head that is amazing. Much lighter and it has a super solid hit. The price could have gone up but they were $5.
As always with a herd of players in my fam alone, I had to come up with somthing cheep, available and replaceable. The quality shafts on the market today last. So an inexpensive was head was in order. Mailman Jay has used a double capper for months. But Piranha#1(Jacob), it's a entirely diff story. He can peel of a new head ina couple weeks.
The heads I make are a combined effort with my front man Mike T. Cellular pipe with a solid 1/4" abs cap. With no holes at 5.5" combined weight is 95gr.

I really like the Eighthinch caps. They're drillable, cuttable, you can move the screw holes and really tinker with them to get the fit. I've made them work with a few different IDs of tubing, usually with a Dremel tool to rout the tight fits. I did this with a McMaster-purchased UHMWPE pipe. You may say I'm moving away from lightness, but au contraire- with the bulletproof material combo of UHMW and 6/6 nylon, you give yourself more chance to remove weight through speed holes because the materials hold up better with less structure. My UHMW setup is indestructible and I get nothing from compliments from those who use it.
For an even lighter setup I pair similar-sized HDPE and cut the same large speedholes and use the same caps. On shots I'd say my mallet is at 30-45 degrees from the ground and the edge of the cap takes a lot of the damage, and handles it well.
