Broken players

Just curious as to how often people are experiencing injuries to players?

I broke my clavicle (collar bone) 3 weeks ago and it's driving me insane not being on my bike or able to play. To my knowledge it'sthe only major injury any of the players in London have received. Obviously there's the expected scrapes and grazes but has anyone suffered serious injuries.

Just to make you chuckle, we play in a five-a-side foorball pitch with metal goals, I hit the goal post clavicle first whilst preventing Yorgo from scoring. To date I still don't actually know whether I was successful in blocking the goal.

Lots of cuts and scrapes, large bruises that covered from the hip to the knee, but nothing broken yet.

broken wrist, stiches. bruises. but for me well i cant be hurt. the bones that bounce thats my nickname

In East Van (I'm sure he'll tell you more) we've only had one little guffer (who yelled top centre all the time) ride himself into the wall and break his hand. It looked so funny we all thought it couldn't be broken (except the doctor in attendance). The cast, picture with screws and inability to play for 6 weeks proved us wrong.

But I heard one of the original guys from Portland had a really close call. Near death? He is nolonger playing. Is anyone in the know from Portland bored enough to be on this site. I doubt it but they can really tell the story.

broken

A court with 3 wire fences and a brick wall... I had to ride into the wall.   Yep, I got a little too excited.  Only polo broken bone I ever herard of in Vancouver.

There's x-rays and info about how bones heal at http://flickr.com/photos/urbanbicyclist/2215565502/

We've had 1 broken wrist in Melbourne. Simon put his mallet in his front wheel after a goal.  At the time nobody had been playing for more than a dozen weeks.

Same month another bloke nearly knackered himself on his stem and spent the next 6 weeks off the bike.

We play a much larger less contained court here (not my preference as people rely on speed rather than skill to keep the ball)

All injuries that took place when no other player was closeby:

  • i ran over the ball, hit the ground head first, chipped a tooth, no big deal.
  • max from madison had pedal strike, went down and broke his wrist, 12 weeks +, still recovering.
  • brian w from ottawa hit the boards in Toronto and tore his rotator cuff a couple weeks ago, maybe out 6-8 weeks. maybe i should let him tell that story cause he's bored  enough now that he can't do much else but sit around.

I got a black eye. Twice now.

oh and i have bald spots on both shoulders, where there are no freckles anymore due to repetitive road rash, including from the same crash that chipped my tooth.  tho describing my freckles as "broken" would be a bit of a stretch.

Broken right big toe - Slipped out of clips and drove foot into ground with maximum force.  Totaly sucks since the muscles/tendons associated with big toe run all the way up the inside of the leg.  Toe is fine now, but inner calf and right groin flair up once and a while making it so I can't walk for a couple of minutes.....fucking polo

Oh, and there was that one guy in New York (I think) who got gored in the chest with an unplugged bullhorn bar end. It took a core sample of skin, muscle, and lung.

I'm pretty sure that wins for worst injury.

You in MKE should ask about the origin of "The Von Munz Clause" some time.

lucky,

i know the story as i've heard it many times but i'll ask von munz again to get all the names and details correct.... but basicaly what happened was that eric von munz had one of those long punk rock spikes screwed onto one of those front reflector brackets (the kind that work like a headset spacer) and i believe there was some discusion beforehand as to whether it was safe to play with that on his bike. well, sure enough, there was a crash and the spike completely pierced the flesh between the  thumb and index finger of some poor sucker. then the guy who got pierced looked at his hand and said something like, "i have to go to the hospital" classic.

I think you and Rory are both talking about Billdozer, who lives in NY now, but was playing in Portland on vacation when this happened. Long story short, he got gored and lost most of his blood. He's fine and touring with his hardcore band Attake right now.

When I first started playing in NYC Ch0mb0 hit me pretty much head on as we were both going for the ball behind our goals (teammates) on the south side of the Pit. Being twice my size he threw me against the small wall where people sit and I displaced my rib cage a bit. Only found that out a few weeks later after the intense pain took me to a chiropractor.

And Emilie sorry to say but that ball went in the goals... I still feel guilt!

No guilt required though dude, accidents happen and I'll place no blame on you.

Got the new x-rays done. They've decided not to plate me so I'll be back in the game in a few weeks, hopefully even to get some training for the Shorditch.

our buddy darryl almost had a bar end go through his throat. that was a seriously scary moment. i've had a chainring slice through my calf and i should have had stitches but, being an idiot, left it as is. i've reopened that wound i don't know how many times now. also, i had a bad ankle sprain. that was months ago and it is still uncomfortable.

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

red army rebel has given me a lovely facial scar.  it was months ago in the same tourney he sprained his ankle in.  it is not painful.

Slamm Rob cracked a rib last year. Went down on his mallet uprighted.

I had my wheel hooked and rolled my ankle on the way down. Not broken, but it was sprained bad enough to put me on crutches for a week or so, and kept me out of the game for at least a month. This happened 4 months ago, and it still kinda hurts.

whie not technically at polo, on the ride  home from polo, to my car (about 3 miles away) i flipped over my  handle bars  in the parking lot where my car was, fracutring my right wrist for 12 weeks, 5 casts, MRI & CT scan, 8 x-rays, played my first real games just this past month. plus many bruises and scrapes from those past games as well

I slipped in the rain at polo one night. I hit my knee on a downtube cable guide and sliced through a muscle and an artery. Now I tape off any braze ons that are noy being used on my polo bikes. Stitches, knee brace, and a cane made me miss last years NSPI.

I’ve been reluctant to post to the forum because I’ve only
been playing polo since march, but I figure I’m now officially broken-in. Yesterday I was taking the ball up court with a trailing opponent
just behind me on my non-ball side. He started going down and grabbed me while
doing so, thereby bringing me down with him, hard. Not a good idea. After a night of pain and wondering, I went to the
emergency room for x-rays and came home with a cast, sling, and referrals to
orthopedic specialists. I have a few fractures in my elbow. I guess that's what
broke my fall. Out 4-6 weeks. Before this I was confined to scrapes, bruises,
and soreness.

the pain is soo beautiful

And yet somehow, like beauty, you've managed to escape you're deserved of it. I don't know how you've survived somewhat intact this long given how you throw yourself around out there.

is this chris roberts?? chris, wha' happened? i thought i saw a big crash out there, but didn't know you were hurt. feel better, kiddo.

Yup, it’s me. What was seemingly just another big crash resulted in an awkward landing for me. I went to an orthopedic surgeon today and will go back next week for more x-rays. Her diagnosis is not as severe as that of the emergency room, so maybe I’ll be back in action soon. Thanks for the well-wishes Cecily.

one of the many

ken, you and i suffered the same injury. will it ever get better y'think?

oh, and le jackal tells me he doesn't like polo 'less i fuck him up somewhat!

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

the operative word being 'somewhat'.

my calves and ankles look like sharks have been nibbling on them due to my big spiked BMX pedals... I love 'em too much to switch them out though, and besides, the scars are kinda purty.

Some of you guys might know him (I don't) but a while back one of the dudes from Dayton got a mallet to the face and broke his skull right there where your eye cavity is... they were telling us this story the last time we drove up to play there, and said dude eventually showed up to play that afternoon... with a full helmet and face cage. I don't blame him. I think that's the most f'ed up injury I've heard about so far.

{}------- lexington -------{}

like Brian, I damaged my rotator cuff in vancouver last year after going over my bars. I on a weekend visit and was riding my road bike at the time. It was the combination of front brakes and trying to take the ball off someone across both our front wheels from the right, though I guess I could have just let him score... I'm pretty sure that if I hadn't been down on my drop bars at the time though that I would have cracked my head open since I wasn't wearing a helmet at the time, but I guess that if I hadn't been on my road bike I probably wouldn't of crashed. Oh well!

In Victoria, the worst crash I remember sent my friend flying and he whacked his head on the pavement but luckily he was wearing a helmet.

Having been wacked in the head (7 stitches) and of course my broken wrist ... I'm thinking of trying some protective gear. Lacrosse helmets and gloves.

Or maybe I could install airbags on my bike and live in a bubble. I haven't decided which yet.

my pointer finger nail got bent back last night at polo.

it hurts and it looks werid. i would take one of those huge hip bruises over this anyday.

me personally:

broken pinky, broken ribs (two occasions), ruptured bursae sac which is the thing btw your knee cap and leg bone, I now have a permanent lump on my left knee cap, hundreds of bumps bruises and cuts but this bruise takes the cake.

it was like that for weeks, happened on the same wreck as the knee injury at the Put Up or Shut Up tourney we held after slaughterama. I am constantly injured.

I took two airborne comets to that very same spot on my inner thigh this past winter... both within a week. The first one bruised to be about the size of the ball, but the second one made it look a lot like that. What are the chances, huh?

a few years back at the west side invite in portland an old school recently retired bill dozer took an open ended handle bar to the chest almost cost him his life the only time we had the emergency crew come to the court. so plug up those handlebars.

Ange got into a fistfight with the pavement (with mallet in hand, of course). Pavement won. The x-ray was pretty cool: spiral fracture of his metacarpus. The thing just twisted until it finally snapped.

Sponge bathes and feedings for three weeks... Until he made me film while he sawed the cast off himself...

Update from the London Shoreditch Festival Polo tournament.
A fractured Skull, I don't know the guy but we saw him later that day and he seemed okay(ish).

It was caused by a head on collision during the initial charge for the ball.

Be careful people.

Yeah, and the day before the tournament, you, Emilié broadsided me into the fence, and i fractured my nose and ripped my knees to shreds. It's all fine now, apart from the bruises on my shins have bled out and all the blood has settled in my foot so my foot is now black!

Equal blame dude. Apologies I'm sure you'll get me back some time soon.
Good to see you on the forum.

and Nora from german had a collision with Estelle and broke a bone in her foot, also in pick-up play on saturday. she's out two weeks, which isn't too bad, but it means she didn't play in the tourney.

yeah man, saturday was some rough games, sunday i barely got a game. thanks to you kev ;)

i broke my rib once, and a few girls hearts. but emilie already knew that ;)

You swore you'd never tell?

I have nerve damage in my left arm and I think it's from polo.

Not broken but damn annoying!!

just scratchs and bumps here nothing major. ever.

Last December, while playing in Dayton, my front wheel caught someone's back wheel. I couldn't get out of the new clipless I was trying out and went down hard on my right side. My right shoulder ended up behind my back. It popped back into place on its own, but crackled and crunched severely when trying to make arm circles. After a month of serious pain I finally have an MRI and find out I tore the labrum (Hillsach's tear) and needed surgery. After a somewhat painful recovery of several post-operative weeks I began physical therapy and now have almost complete range of motion and am almost completely pain-free.

Shut up and ride your bike.

Shut up and ride your bike.

popped my shoulder last night! first time for that...

The good news is that it gets easier to pull out and put back into joint every time it happens. Cos the tendons aren't very elastic.

The bad news is you'll need to do lots and lots of push ups from now on, cos the muscles are the only thing holding your shoulder in place.

Time to update this thread: I got two broken ribs this weekend at the tourney here in Madison.

AND finished the game. AND played out the bracket before heading for x-rays. I was most impressed.

AND then she returned to help clean the court and wind things down before bothering with pain meds.

She's tough. Its a real shame her team didn't get to work through the next day's games together.

I fractured two ribs at the winter classic a year ago by falling and landing on my arm. Also bloody nose and a circular bruise on my side, both from being hit by mallets.

fuuuuuck that's a real shitter, jake!

as strong as the impulse is to return to action ASAP, do what lucky says and be smart about it... doctors sure sound like ultra-douchebags when they're telling you you can't play or even ride for a bunch of weeks, but it'll be worth the wait to let it heal properly and not fuck up your playing forever.

Jake you need to talk to "captain clavicle" Angelo. I think he's done that like 3 times.

Not the same injury but when I dislocated my shoulder after Toronto I went to a sports medicine clinic and under went a pretty strict physiotherapy program . I'm sure you have to have a period of immobilization but as soon as you can start physio. Do it.

Chinese medicine helps too.

Fuck Jake, that sucks.

Do what the doctor sez, Jake. Don't rush your recovery, you'll fuck everything up forever.

Man,
I stuck my fingers in the grill while falling. I was trying to get a grip (didn't), ended up falling on my left hand and finished by tunring over two fingers ! It wasn't painfull (It was really cold) until I pull them back to place...then it hurt like hell, almost trew-up.
Now, my two middle fingers are kind of fucked, cant really stretch them neither bend them completly. I have to wear this weared hand splint (if it's the right word) 20mn every two hours for four months. If the fingers don't get better, they operate.
Otherwise, nice cuts, scares, bruises...
We have some new players in Paris and they don't really know how and when to stop, they don't play fast unlike confirmed players, they're not always at the good place...so we end up running into each other, it sucks and hurts.
I tried the new Pake strapes, they're made of nylon and rubber. Well, who says rubber, says good grip...It's always nice to fall with (sometimes both of) your feet still straped in the pedals.

well its nice to hear you have some new players in paris. hopefully you guys can put up a good team for the worlds in phisty ( thats what the fixie kids call philly now days) . also i hope that karsrue stops playing shit polo and picks out some real players to come out hear.

Having broken the same clavicle 2 times in 2 weeks. It sucks balls. Take the time and let it heal. Have loads of Calcium for the next few years, to make it strong at repairing. I did and mine is sweet. Not sure if it helped it at all but sure it is fucking strong now.

I had a straight break/ fracture, then a 12-14mm overlap break.

SF had a wicked first-time-rider injury recently. The rather tall fish had made his way to the pavement just in time to catch a tire turning away trying to avoid running over our stretched mallet hand. It ripped the entire tip of his middle finger off of the bone just behind the nail. After five weeks of having the tip wired to the bone, he showed back up on Monday. He plans on coming out for session two in a couple of weeks. Hopefully it will go better.

I played a summer tourney here in Olympia recently dressed up with a little war paint. Near the end of the game my thumb was sheared open nicely with a mallet so what do I do? Well of course I smear the blood on my face to replace my makeup. Right after that our team made the winning goal and someday I'll get the victory photo with me half drunken with blood all over my face wearing a helmet with a stencil of bat boy that says death machine on the front.

I personally have a cast on each arm right now from polo. Get them off Sept. 24th.

Multiple new breaks and fractures, with old badly healed breaks, added up.

So, to get the story straight.....

Billdozer was playing in a Portland tourney.
A out of towner crashed in front of Bill.
Bill fell onto the out of towner's exposed bar end. Got up, then soon fell over.
Blood started filling his chest cavity, ended up being a large percentage of his blood in his chest cavity.
By the time the ambulance left, there had been like $500 collected from the crowds to help pay for the cost.

Which turned out to be upwards of $250,000.

By the way, I was told he hurt the same region again, punctured by something, at Inter Bike in 2008.

So, for all you naggers, a out of towner caused the problem.

We in Portland make people use plugs on bars.

I install them first, then slide the grips on over.

Works better that way.

Bike Polo Saved My Life..

Just joined the broken bone club in my first match at World's. I ended up (stupidly) playing the remainder of the round robin Saturday & 3 matches in Sunday's brackets. Ended up with the most goals I've ever scored in a tournament. I did not want to end my tourney with only one match. After my last match on Sunday I spent 9 hours in a Philly ER - missed all the final matches & the awards party which made me really pissed. Will be having surgery Tuesday for two pins. Looks like I'm out for 8 weeks min & physical therapy afterwards.

New player stopped in front of me when I was going full speed, boxed in, nowhere to go, t-bone going over their bike, I think their bike causing this injury as I went over, though it could've been mine. Not sure what happened in the next second, but this was the result, at least after some first aid. I have shin/knee pads, just wasn't wearing them for some reason. Lesson learned. Took this right after I got home as a reminder.

my leg's polo carnage

Luckily all swelling went away today (next day), still oozing though.

This talk of wheel covers made me think of this picture.

update01

Last game of the day in July after a pickup tournament. Got my foot sucked into someones back wheel, crushing and twisting it all around. It healed up.

como. shattered ring finger, dislocation, & torn tendons. day after surgery, they put me in "the schenck splint" here (pronounced "skank")

Posted this in another thread, but it really belongs here.
Trying to snake the ball from either Truck or Lefty Joe (Cant remember which) my giant ass handlebars caught in the fence and I caught a bar stem pretty straight on.
Had some whiskey and kept playing on it, didn't think anything of it.
Later that night, the girlfriend said something about blood and the hospital, freaked me out a bit and we ended up there.

Happened at the beginning of this last summer, there's still a pea sized hematoma in there today.

You'll see. Unless you drilled out your eyes because they were too heavy.

oh. my. god.

You have got to cut those horse-dong-sized handlebars down. One reason everyone has narrow bars is to keep them from getting caught on things.

holy lord.

took a header yesterday and basically stubbed my toe perpendicular into the court. tore the nail from the bed and had a nice subungual hematoma (thanks google). soaked my toe and the drill bit in alcohol then went ape shit with a 12v dewalt. feels so much better.

Good move! I stubbed my toe when I was little and the same thing happened. Unfortunatly (as a small child) I didn't deal with it like you did and my toe/nail are still funny to this day.

2nd place behind BillDozers lung puncture is prob "The Grade C-Murder Meat Joust". Casey had dropped a plane of glass down his leg and nearly sliced his shin off. The doctors sewed him up with more than a dozen stitches and sent him on his way. Upon his return to the court a few days later the 1st thing he did was miss the ball, insert his mallet into his front wheel and as he was endowing over his leg caught the turned handlebars ripping out all the stitches and lots more.

Someone took him to the hospital, the doctors looked at the wound in disgust then muttered something about trying to mend hamburger.

He was bandaged up and returned to Alberta Park. Our 1st polo hospitalization only kept him away for a few hours. But Casey don't joust no more.

We miss him.

Brake lever.

Bottom of the shoe pool

Today Ramon dismounted from a really bad dual endo crash and stepped on the other guy's brake lever. It went through his shoe and into his foot. There was a lot of blood. The brake lever had none on it and wasn't sharp or anywhere a knife edge.

Ouch.

Update: Blog post recapping the entire ordeal can be found here.

Update: He had surgery a day or so after this happened.

Apparently the lever pushed a chunk of shoe rubber up into his foot where it remained. The doctors are guessing that if not for the rubber the lever would have gone all the way through his foot.

In order to remove and sanitize the wound they had to go in through the top of his foot.

Ramon now has the first documented case of polo stigmata.

Holy Shit! Remind me to get steel plate insoles...

Bike Polo Ronin

I had the pleasure of seeing his scar this past weekend in Madison. Thanks for sharing Ramon!! What a champ for playing in a major tournament 2 weeks after a pretty gnarly wreck!

what the fuck!

x2

1st day of South Centrals here in Little Rock I had a similarly goofy thing happen to me with a brake lever. I got t-boned due to there being a half inch of rain on the court, right ankle got wedged btwn my front tire & downtube-pinning & stretching my leg out. Then as the (later-very apologetic) dude came down on my bars with his full weight, I felt the (also smooth & unbroken) brake lever slide into my inner thigh. Wierd thing is..even though it punched an inch-wide hole that was about 2 and a quarter inches deep..my shorts & thermals never got a hole in them, which actually made for a pretty clean wound! My teammmate Pete was gonna sew me up in Lexingtons van...but we opted for the ER. Thanks to my homie Ben for magically appearing with a jar of moonshine!
Here's some vid of the wash out & sew up.

  • Got back to polo 3 weeks ago after 6 fuckin months off with a separated shoulder that still ain't quite right, to have a bone in my index finger malleted and fractured . Played thru it Nearly better but unfortunately it's just below the knuckle were arthritis has set in after a malletting last Halloween WTF nae pain nae gain. Love being back. MARCO.....

"So this is how it ends"MACHINE

It pales in comparison to Ramones foot, but does anyone have any pictures of my face at the North Americans?

You'll see. Unless you drilled out your eyes because they were too heavy.

wow, my injuries over the past 5 months can never compare to any of these.
just tons of bruises, a cracked knee cap, mallet to the big toe and a sprained ankle that kept me off my bike for a week.

i wear one strap hockey shin/knee pads now. and a 15$ mongoose helmet from walmart. thanks to that thing, my brain is still in my head. i fell backwards off my bike and the back of my head did that classic hammer slam on the ground. even with a helmet i was seeing stars.

my free American health care consists of, "hey! does anyone have any vicodin? or a joint?"
because someone has a pharmacy in their purse :D and someone has an extra pair of crutches laying around.

    hurray polo

Someone post photos and a story about that nasty chainring bite that happened in RVA this weekend.

I want to see a photo of the chainring that did it.

don't have a chainring pic, but it was just a large chainring that had its teeth ground down. still was very sharp though
    http://i56.tinypic.com/2lk5vn6.jpg (nasty picture)
    photocredit: bainsworth

Yup that's the one. Is he OK? How did they treat him at the hospital? I can't even fathom the wound care he'll need to be doing.

Last update from last night while he was still in the hospital was 26 stitches and was being fitted for a hard cast. They, the doctors said he needs that because shin injuries are very difficult to heal. He will have the cast on for a month.

    ============================
You have to go out of town to get inside jokes.

Thanks nick for directing my mom to the hospital. 26 stitches is the final count, fitted for a half cast/splint. Splint was actually removed today at my follow up appointment and rewrapped in ace bandage in gauze. Stitches are looking good. For those wondering, yes that is some bone. Apparently i did have some bone flakes in the wound that were flushed out. I'm on crutches for the next few weeks. I'm out for at least a month. Shit sucks. New chainring and polo guard will likely be ordered. Anyone know who's shirt that is/was that was used to tie up my leg? RVA will get a care package for sure soon. I'm pretty certain i'm going to do the tattoo idea from baines eventually. Thanks again Richmond for kicking ass.

glad to hear you are doing ok! thanks for being a good sport about the 12 camera phones hovering over your injury minutes after it happened. i believe the shirt was dc mike's. i doubt he wants it back.

    sprinks wrote:

was mine. welcome to keep. hope it helped and i didn't tie the knot too tight

glad to hear you're not in a cast, hope to see ya back out there soon. Pick up in DC Nov 7-8... BE THERE... j/k.

Ahaha. Hopefully i'll be up on my feet again by then. And with a safe ride. I thought there were plans to change that though. Oh whatever. I'll be itching to play again soon enough. Shoot me a message with your address and t-shirt size, by the way.

it wasn't that coors light shirt was it

have people not learned? I'd rip that guys face off and graft it to my shin if that were me.

Matt- From the looks of it, I think his own chain ring hurt himself. Lesson learned!

    Midwest is best!!

is that bone i see there?

I can't unsee it! I'm speechless otherwise. Was that you, Mike? Get well soon, bro

poor guy had his mom with him too at our big pickup day. that was so brutal and I wasn't even there to see it. Chunks of his own flesh were stuck on his chainring
    * it was Sprinkles from Charlottelsville who has the hatchet wound on his shin

The chain ring wasn't that ugly (before the collision), but judge for yourself. Still a few sharp(er) bits from the grinding, but I hesitate to think what it would've looked like with all the teeth intact.

can you explain how exactly this happens? Did he slip off the pedals and put the shin right into that bashguard or what?

That's exactly how it happened. I hit the brakes to avoid t-boning a a player who had cut me off defensively. Lost balance/grip with pedals, went to put the foot back down and into the bashguard. Moral of the story: use a real bashguard and/or shinguards for me.

Welll sprinks the image of your shin has forever been branded into my mind.

Haha. That's what i like to hear.

hit a huge eyehook sticking about 2 in out of the wall playing in a warehouse... while it hurt really bad, there is virtually no pain when I move my arm! The muscle i hit isn't part of a group that use to move my arm very often apparently.

If you want to have fun with a camera set up a fixed zoom, fixed room lighting no flash take a photo every 24 hours. You can make an animation later to show how the stuff turns colors and moves around ... maybe x out the nipples for capt.jake's benefit.

Me too on the wrist issues. Mine cause by a nasty fall. I've been out for a month but I got back on my polo bike this week. It has truly sucked and healed surprisingly slow.

Physio-therapy might be a good idea. My wrist took forever to heal because I didn't go to physio until 6 months after my injury. Get that checked out.
