We need to plan some Chicago/MKE friendlies this winter. We don't have an indoor place for Chicago polo just yet.
Winter Polo
What is the general change in polo for folks who play through the winter. I'm interested in what cities that live with snow do, such as move inside, how many folks stop coming out and what type of equiptment changes you use.
Here in Ottawa we just finished shoveling (no joke) more than a ton of snow from our court and that was just half. We played half court all day Sunday and can only hope the snow holds off for the rest of the week so we can play next weekend. We don't have lights so there is no weekday games. The new news is that there is a new indoor skate park opening soon. Half is going to be the skatepark, and the other half will be for polo and roller derby. The whole place is 15000 sq.ft. It's going to be rad! All year now baby! Honey, i'm coming home late again.
i wondered how brian got so ripped...all that shoveling
no dice nyc...MKE!
So does this mean a winter NSPI??? Once a year is not enough, methinks. I'm also wondering what crazy new level of skills you fuckers will be developing now - poetry in motion with only three seasons to practice, now what? Can we expect a Doug/Paul/Zack crushing is in the works? Delicious...
angelo do you have a contact for this space, if its still around?
We had a small core group of players here in Boston that played all winter long once a week. Shoveled the court when it snowed, salted it when it iced over, that's about it. Winters are pretty mild here compared to mah hometown of Minneapolis, never really gets below 10 degrees if I remember correctly.

well the ole panhandle doesnt have to many problems.
tonight it will be a chilly low 36 todays high was in the high 50s.
this week it might even get up to 70 and looks like the low will be in the 40s.
snow is out of the question and the rain is usually brief if anything.
this will be out first "winter" and seems we are just losing our spectators and not so many players actually gaining some if anything.
life is hard on the redneck rivera!
Hamilton polo seems to be a winter sport because more people are making it out now than during the summer months (myself included..)..last winter was the same. doesnt usually snow too much in hamilton but if it does there are some good parking lots and school grounds we can use cause they get salted or shovelled..maybe we'll play up on that 7 - floor parking garage again, on the 6th level..what a view....
speaking of "big ball" polo, i don't think we could have done the winter classic last year with a street hockey ball (nor without, in my case, percocets, gin and juice for the ankle sprained on the ice the night before).
if it snows right before the NYC in Madison tourney, maybe we'll have to get the wooden mallets and the mini soccer ball out of storage for the outdoor games jan 1st. portland's mud bowl with is the same day, and they're sorta doing the same thing.
1. crandall
2. kremin and dumptruck

Sweet! I remember these shots making my day last year.
NYC: I started playing last Jan. and I remember a few weekends of shoveling - paul and frank and a few others buying shovels at the hardware store and clearing the snow and ice. It's usually substantially warmer in the city than in the surrounding areas, so we don't get much snow accumulation at all. Less people come out to play (core folks excepted) and less 'civilians' come by to hang out and watch. But that means more games for us, and people stop leaving just because it gets dark and are willing to play in the crappy streetlamp-light... So all you snowed-in poloers, come visit us at the pit!
yeH i love winter polo. smaller group of players.
snow is infrequent here these days. so we play all year round in preparation for the bounty hunters
I hope Chicago has a "Welcome back Dumptruck" winter match when I get back from frame building school... HINT!
there is one thing that portland lacks in the winter. and that is snow we may get a inch or two all year and its never on polo days. but we do like our great annual ice storm that happens some time in jan or later. but i am sure whiskey is one of those must have on any snowy day. good luck mid west and east coast polo teams this winter in the snow i am jelous of you all.

why don't you stud some tires and play on the canal????

500 wood screws in each tire... but make sure you grind down the sharp edges of your mallet. No walls either. We have an indoor spot in the works.
We found a hatch in the backwoods of Lanark County thats only accessible by ski-doo. I can't really say any more than that.

Madison is getting destroyed with snow right now. I thought last year was bad but it seems like we are going to be covered for a few days here.
I couldn't believe all the snow you got last year. You beat a 100 year old record right?

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...
We spent about 10 man hours clearing and salting our court this week. It got slightly above freezing on Saturday. We were able to squeeze in a solid 4 hours of play before darkness. More snow pics here.

In winter, we let the bikes rest. Go skiing on our local hill, or at any of the 5 ski hills around, or go back country touring, or sledding, or any other winter fun. Unfortunately we don't have anywhere under cover, so we wait for the spring melt, and then get our shovel on.

Rookies first post. Ya der.
I was in the garage for 45 minutes on Sunday. That was a terrible joke.
We just started playing indoors last week. Big ups to Afro Pat for the warehouse hook up! We still got a little work to do to get a decent perimeter set up but it beats the hell out of playing in the snow! All that shoveling was eating into our drinking time.
(Pedal Republik of Cleveland: Drunken Heckling Champs 2008)
them some weird markings on the court some large face of circles any clue as to what the big blue lines are for? lacrosse? i like the short base net. my problem with most nets is the wide back to them.
yeah, i usually dislike nets, but these were nice and shallow.
as to the line markings, I'm not sure. They run wiffle ball, lacrosse, flag football, roller/foot hockey leagues there so I'm guessing one of those...?
also there is an almost identical court in the backlot that is covered with a full dome tent :)
this place is like 20 min drive out of the city and it's not free, but it beats the hell out of shoveling snow and ice. plus the hockey dudes were def. bringing in 30-racks of beer, so we can make ourselves at home.
damn jav, that court looks amaaaazing to play on
Richmond can only sit back and think of the days when it used to snow. Oh I miss it
I should probably stop throwing things
yeah pretty incredible. we are reserving a three hour spot on it once a week. maybe twice.
the surface is kinda slick but the boards are awesome and they sell roller hockey balls and hamburgers downstairs. hmmmm ... hamburgers...
FUCK. I need to move to boston.

Its -14F (-25C) here now. Supposed to be 30F on Sunday. We're going to try out a new garage then.

A cracked yellow ball? Crazy. Hopefully it was Ton's ball and not mine.
I live in Minnesota. The so called State of Hockey. You think a mother fucker could find street hockey balls for sale somewhere! Not one single freakin place within the city limits of Minneapolis sells any Franklin balls. My theory is that once summer rolls around no one wants to think about Winter.
Can someone recommend an online place (ie somewhere that doesn't shaft you for shipping) to buy some cold weather Franklin balls?

we wuss out some weeks but this past week we got enough for 3 on 3 action under our mostly covered court... the snow depth gradient actually kept the ball from getting too far out of play and away from the usual broken glass piles/traps (playing under bridges is a bit of a mixed bag), time to break out crappy cell phone pics:

In mke we, as many already know, have a covered and lit parking garage to play in. no wind, rain, or darkness to deal with except on your way there. there are some downsides to the garage, like the pillars that are in two corners, but it enables us to play all year round.
The only real decline we see in people coming out to play is when it gets to be about -15 C (or 5 F) or the snow outside is blizzard condition. Equipment doesn't change just your clothing, plus side is less scrapes and cuts... about the same amount of bruising.
