InterBike The 3rd annual (2010) UPDATE

InterBike The 3rd annual (2010) UPDATE

Is anyone going to the Interbike show? I want to get a game going out there.

It seams like not very many people are interested this year. For those that will be there for the show anyway. I still want to have pick up so let me know who you are and we will get together.

THANKS KIMBO!

I wish I was going... I haven't been to Interbike in years!

I'll be there from Mon to Friday and I'd love to get in on some games. I was actually going to post something but you beat me to it.

I'll be there and I would also love to play some polo. and I am bringing 2 to 3 other kids from Seattle that would also be down. Let me know if you have any ideas where or when.

Leon

Well, I'll bring some extra mallets and my polo bike for sure then.

I'll be there Thursday after noon and Friday. I'll be staying at the Venetian. We should get a game going Thursday night. Any ideas for a meeting spot?

I'm staying next door at the Casino Royal.

Let's just say Thursday night is the game. There are plenty of big parking lots in Vegas, an old tennis court would be nice, but I don't know much past the strip and downtown.

If I end up driving, I can bring cones, pylons, mallets, balls, and even a flip score board.

As long as we get enough people to play.

I could always hang flyers at Interbike on Weds/Thursday

----------------------------------

----------------------------------
Moooooo!

Thursday night is pretty packed. Momentum Magazine's fashion show is from 5 to 6, MASH SF Alleycat (Drag Race Vegas) is Thursday night, and Bike Hugger's "Mobile Social" party is also that night. There's a list of other after hours events at over here.

Add polo to that list!

That's my post from last year... I'm not bring anything this year... I'm not sure I can make the polo.. depends on who's driving.

its been a year or so since i was last in vegas, but if you dont mind going to the old end of the strip, there is a lot of abandoned pavement down by the back of the riviera by the convention center. should be ample ground for a polo match! is interbike held at sands or lvcc or what?

It's always hard to tell with Vegas, there is so much construction going on all the time, what was once a lot, is now a casino. I know at least one big casino has opened in the last year or so. I haven't been there since last Interbike.

When the day gets closer I'll glady swap cell phone numbers etc.

Interbike is held in the Sands which is attached to the Venitian.

Maybe a good rooftop parking garage would be a cool spot for a game?

Someone scan google earth for empty space.

And I'm pretty much planning on driving so I can bring some gear, but cones should be easy to find if that falls through.

----------------------------------

----------------------------------

Thursday night we will play!
If you could make flyers to pass out at the show that would be great!
I will have a few people to play. I am sure between the three of us we can recruit enough people to get a game going. Before we head out to Vegas we should exchange phone numbers, or set a specific place and time to meet. Let me know if you guys have any other ideas.

Thanks for helping me get a game together!

As a warning, I have no artistic talent what so ever, but I can make something useable.

Since it looks like I'll be getting there first, I may be able to scout some places out on Tuesday night for possible playing spots. I'll have net access on my phone so I can post ideas before I make fliers.

Vegas has a kinkos right?

I am going with 4 people who are avid BP players so there will be enough.

Leon
Seattle Bike Polo

Leon...I'm not sure if Montana has contacted you, but he is really trying to play out there. Show the people there about polo. You should give him a call or something.

I think it would be sweet if we played in the show. I know that’s a little farfetched.
I am sure anything that say's Bike Polo at this spot at this time will work for a flyer. I know there will be movie premiers at one of the big hotels at night. (KG) Maybe if you hear about one when you are there we should play nearby to keep the bike show vibe together. I've played with the LA BP guys before I started my own BP crew. I am excited to play with other experienced BP people. I know some people in Minnesota over at Surly bikes and I am sure they will want to play. I will bring extra mallets. Let me know if I could do anything else.

Joey (IE Bike Polo)

If you can get one of the booth to sponsor a party or event, then it can more easily be tied in with the show. In years past, Dirt Rag has hosted Bowling Parties and a lot of people would show up to get drunk and throw balls. Is Urban Velo going to be there?

The movie premier is probably going to be a DH or Freeride related video and I thought those were always on Wednesday night but I maybe be wrong.

Thursday is also the Crit at Mandalay Bay, and now something called Arena mtn-X at the South Point Casino.. (about 5 miles South of the Strip).

I read there is supposed to be some Track racing this year but it seems to have fallen through.

I think the best bet to have some tie in with Interbike would be to play before/during the crit. Last year I didn't watch the crit, I was busy getting drunk, but I know a lot of people go to watch.

I did talk with Montana and I am willing to do anything I can to help it get along a little further. There will be 3 to 4 polo bikes there from my crew.

So I took at look at your link. I think that is a great spot to play polo. Are you good at making fliers? If you are can you make one so you can pass some out when you get to the show. I plan on being in Vegas at around 3pm on Thursday 9-25. I have recruited a few more players. We should meet after the show somewhere on Thursday.

Joey IE BIKE POLO

I should have net access in Vegas so I'll be able to do some scouting and talking to some people before Thursday.

If you're into that thing... I'll have a twitter set up that I'll be posting random stuff on through out the week.... if I'm sober enough to remember.

I will be getting in on the 23rd, and I've been talking at length with vendors and bicycle companies about getting access to enough space to play exhibition games on the tradeshow floor; no dice so far. I, and another player from Philly named Peter have made arrangements to display our polo bikes at the Bianchi and Swobo booths, and I will be bringing along materials I'm having printed for Vegas, which will both help explain the sport to the curious and let us promote the games we will be playing there.
So far I have:
Myself and Peter from Philly
Matt Case from Cyclone in Portland
Leon and maybe Peter Parker from Seattle, probably bringing other players
most likely Brad from NY

If you know you're going, please contact me with:
when you'll be getting in
whether you'll have your polo bike
how many mallets you can bring
ideas about where to play and
how we're gonna find enough material to build halfway decent boards

thanks this is going to be fucking rad.

Hello Montana!

KG mentioned this spot. (check out the link)
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_wJGwMfSe-dY/SM3lZvNGkUI/AAAAAAAACRE/FMenBD26tc...
I believe it would be great spot to play.
I will be in Vegas at 3pm on 9-25. We should all meet for a beer before we set sails on the polo game.
I can bring mallets. Others have also agreed to brings goals, mallets, and scoreboards.
Monday 9-22 we should all exchange phone numbers so we can contact each other at the show.
We will have plenty of people to play.

JOEY IE Bike Polo

I can bring 6 mallets and cones if we need. I will be traveling with 4 players myself, Gary, Seabass, and Nathanimal. All from Seattle and we will have 3 polo bikes.

I can bring 4 or 5 mallets, and my bike, pylons and cones.

It'd be cool to piggyback onto that race but I don't know if there is any space to play.

I'm getting to Vegas late Monday so I can help with stuff if needed and I'll have a van.

I just read on the Interbike twitter.

http://twitter.com/Interbike/statuses/925038398

"Just heard that the newly formed Hardcourt Bicycle Polo Federation will be hosting bike polo demos during Interbike. No details yet.

about 4 hours ago from twhirl "

I'm thinking about walking around Interbike with my mallet as a shout out to all polo players.

I'll make sure to pass on my cell phone number before I leave for Vegas on Monday.

Ok, so we won't be showing Peter's bike at the Swobo booth because there isn't a Swobo booth. Oops. I still have a green light at Bianchi; does anybody else have contacts where we can sneak a bike in to display? Leon, you must have some favors to call in with one of your reps. KG, thanks for all the info. I'm not so good at the internet: who are you, have we met? Is that your real name? I've really been trying to not know what Twitter is, but I'm glad we're on their radar. I don't know if this breaks some secret forum code, but I'm just gonna give you guys my phone # so we don't take up a shitload of space here making plans. Anyone, please call me to confirm schedule stuff, and I can fill you in on Hardcourt Bicycle Polo Federation. My cell# is 215-840-2568

Seriously, these fuckers won't know what hit them.

I'll work on my contacts to see if there is anyone we can tag on but I bet when we get down will find someone who would be willing to show are bikes off.

nice photo leon, i do believe i took that one.

So any ideas of where to meet up on Thursday? We talking about a bar near by or in the Expo Area itself?

What would be a good time?

Hey George,

I think we should go to the CRIT race at Mandalay Bay and play there. I think the race starts at 5. I'll be in Vegas by 3pm on Thursday. We should meet at a bar at 4 and take it from there.

***********Leon and Montana what do you think about this plan?*****************************************

Joey IE Bike Polo

I like the idea of piggybacking onto an existing high profile event, but I'm with Leon: my employer is paying my way at Interbike, I'm on the clock during the day. That said, my only scheduled obligation with a rep isn't until friday morning. Realistically, most of the ground work for games will have to be done after we arrive, but the people who arrive earliest can do a fair amount of scouting - Mr. George Crawford, I'm lookin' at you. Where are we gonna get our boards from, so we're not chasing a ball around a parking lot the whole time? I'm getting in tuesday evening, staying at the Circus. Never had to go to Vegas before; a little bit scared.
All of the promotional materials for the show are done, don't bother making fliers.
Sounds like we have more than enough players, mallets, and bikes. The missing ingredients are only venue and boards. If everybody does their homework those should fall into place soon enough as well. Everybody, thanks for the contact #'s, I'll be calling you by Monday to talk shop.
Looking forward to meeting you in person.

I'm down for doing whatever but the show dose not end until 6pm so people who are going to the show might have trouble getting off that early but I think I can swing it. My cell is 206 375-3021 and my email is leon.outdoor@gmail.com I am leaving tomorrow morning for Vegas and if anyone can think of anything extra that might need to be done or brought let me know before 7am tomorrow.

Leon
Seattle Bike Polo

I did not go to the Crit last year, but from what I understand, it just went around the parking lot and no cars were allowed into the center.

If that's the way it's done this year, we could hold a game in the center, most people will be watching the crit along the edges and it should be a big open lot in the middle.

----------------------------------
Moooooo!

----------------------------------
Moooooo!

I've never played on a court with boards, never been to a tourney, never played outside my local scene.
I'm getting there late Monday, I will have a vehicle, so if you want to scout around Tuesday evening, I can drive.

I'm kind of lost on the boards issue. I can scout for lots, but for boards I'd go to Home Depot.

----------------------------------
Moooooo!

----------------------------------
Moooooo!

Thank you all for helping with this!
Honestly I have never played with boards either. This game is really fun and I can’t wait to meet people who are as crazy about it as I am. I am down to play after 6 if there are schedules that need to be kept. George feel free to find a spot and start telling people we are playing there. I will call you guys on Thursday around 4 and we can go over the game plan.

Joey IE Bike Polo

I'll find a couple of spots and take pictures of them and post them.

I will be there. I would LOVE to play if someone has a spare bike I can ride, ideally a 17ish mountain bike.

I'll be wearing bike polo shirts as much as possible, I have a giant beard, and also I have this guy this guy on my arm.

i am going to refrain from any comment that could be construed as negative, but my advice is wear suntan lotion, and cover that with pads before games, cause when your 60 you want that thing to still have as much impact and meaning as it does now.

nah, i don't pad up the tattoos on my arms. just my legs. i don't land on my arms very often, although i do have a good scar going through a tattoo on my left arm from somebody's brake lever. the pad wouldn't have been there if i had one anyway though.

suntan lotion is definitely a good thing, regardless of having tattoos though. i carry the highest spf i can find with me to any tournament.

I actually got it so that it does have as much impact and meaning at age 60 as it does now. I wanted to have a permanent reminder of all the fun I've had and friends I've made over the last few years. This sport means a lot to me, and I'm quite excited to be able to play again.

yeah, i know what you mean . . .

"He weren't you one of the guys playing that... polo last night? What's it called?"

"Yeah, it's called bike polo. There is grass version but this is hardcourt."

"OH OK, so are there a lot of groups playing?"

"Yeah, all over the country, where you from?"

"Vancouver."

"Yeah, they play in Vancouver." (I laughed) "You should really look it up."

I then explained where to find more info.

But thanks to everyone for showing up and playing.

Hey- Many thanks for stopping by our booth (Rawland Cycles) and filling me in about bike polo. Too bad I missed the opportunity to play some games with you guys. Next year will do.

It was really great meeting all of you guys!
Considering our last minute planning I believe we did a great job presenting BP at InterBike. Montana let me know if you need any help starting the federation. I am sure I will see you guys again. Like I said before I have only been playing for 4 months and I love this game. It was great meeting other people who also enjoy it as much as I do. With patience our sport will grow. I was surprised that all of you where so positive. There was no bad vibes or inflated egos. Just good times on bikes.

JOEY IE BIKE POLO

Just wanted to take a minute to thank everybody for making polo at Interbike a modest success, especially George for bringing cones and doing a lot of the scouting, and everybody in Seattle for representing in force. I had a lot of fun, and we got noticed by more people than it seemed like at first. By friday people from a lot of different aspects of the industry were excited to talk to me about sponsoring the sport, and even making polo-specific products (more on that later). It's always great to play with people from new cities, but it was even more exciting to talk to players about the sport in cities where I never imagined there would hardcourt polo. What's up, Ogden UT! Thanks to Bianchi and Earth, Wind and Rider for letting us display our polo bikes at the show, and to Traitor Cycles for the shipping box (saved my ass). All in all, worth the hassle for some fun games, and a lot of awesome feedback from the big, dirty bike biz.

How can We get organized to have a full toury for INTERBIKE NEXT YEAR? MONTANA did you get any contacts down there? It would be cool to get industries to bed on us as well as sponsor us for a Vegas bike polo cagematch toury. Any thoughts?

From last year's discussion, a year later...

"Is Urban Velo going to be there?" Yeah. And we'll be there again this year. But we won't be doing anything other than working the show, updating the website and going to bed.

I heard from a Vegas friend earlier this week that a polo tournament is being planned, but I have no other information on it.

Polo Tournament there nice...

Right near the Cross Vegas venue is Desert Breeze Park which has what looks like 2 roller hockey rings.

Great job seeking out the rink KG.

those rinks look good! and not too far from the action. thursday should be good but many people go home friday so not sure many will be around...?

This year will be my first (and most likely, last) time at the freak show. Polo is necessary. Do we have six?

I am possibly coming, it's still kind of up in the air. I have heard that Leon and Seabass may be going as well. But unconfirmed...

Thursday at the rink it is! I am sure we will have plenty. Any surrounding cities interested in coming that will not be participating in Interbike? If we get a number of teams we could step up to a mini tourny.

You're doing this on Thursday 9/24?

The rink is a free facility?

i want to go and need a team. or players. or a place to play pick up. or a place to sit on the side of the court to watch.

You could have just asked me directly.

Hey Jackal,
If you fly out I will make sure you have a place to stay and I can also get you in the show.
Polo Joel yes 9/24.
Pieter if you come out your on my team.
Now that more people are interested I will put efforts to organizing a functional tourny.

If more are coming out let me know!

Where you at Blokker?

i'm sitting in front of my computer joel, what kind of a question is that?

there will be at least 2 from calgary, possible more...

I am planning on going. So there will be yelling and drinking at least. You guys care to join me?

If hypothetically I could get a court set up at Mandalay Bay (inside the crit course), would you be interested? and if so, who has time to help set up/breakdown and who would be interested in playing, specifically Thursday night during the races? Set up/breakdown would occur probably Tuesday and Friday.

I could help break down. I will not be in Vegas on Tue.
If you can make this happen it would be great!

unfortuneately I didn't make it last year, but knew a few people there and heard good things. This is Justin from Calgary.

PBP and AZHC will be bringing a herd again. This time with entrance into the show. I really hope it happens in 2010.

i see that AZ is coming so i might come with Alex and Too short.. woop woop not to sure though

It would be nice to see the three of you together again! Keep me posted.

I'll come out and play again. Sure was fun last year. I think I can get at least one team from SF.

I'll talk to K from ATL. We'll need the help from the Crit Crew to have the same facilities. Otherwise, we're going to have to arrange for a court. Does anyone on here know the "inside" folks? Speaking of that convention hall is HUGE! Could we play indoor, in the convention, demo style? That would be SICK.

Thanks Ben. Ya that has been my dream for a while. Let me know if you get in contact with k.

i am on the inside with a couple of vendors that will be there, what remains to be done? please let us play *at* interbike, not just while interbike is going on.

can we start a new thread for interbike 2010 please? i read about half the comments from 2008 before i realised they were talking about *three freaking years ago*!!

I'm possibly attending this year. would totally be into playing.

some should post a tournament once this is confirmed

I'm pretty sure I will be out to see this infamous "interbike" everyone talks and or bitches about all the time. Never been so I am useless as far as any help with anything but am willing to do whatever I can to help out. Lets try and get some plan going. David you driving out from LA?

Yeah Broe it looks like we are gonna be driving there... U know the situation.. stoke that ur going broe.. Always good to Play with u.. Murder was the Mathafucken Case..

Vegas polo plays Thursday nights in a parking lot at unlv. It took me along time to track them down, sorry I don't have any contact info but I found them on facebook the last time I was in Vegas . I plan to also be there. I know Vegas a little there are no public tennis courts that I know of but there are a lot of parking lots. You will get kicked out of lots near the strip. North Vegas past the old part of the strip is the best area. Hit me up on sac polo on lobp.

Please send me an email address for the LV cats.

I'll be working the show, but get designated polo time. I'll be packing my whip so I'll be in play mode.

Never been to Interbike but I have been to lots of conventions. In the front are often pretty pretty sales professionals. They waste company money dumping free stuff on spectators. People who do actual work are kept somewhere out of sight, where they can provide quality fluffing to any actual customers in attendance.

Is Tucker a fluffer or window dressing?

He is a rep for his company I think. They make great stuff. Ever heard of Fleet Velo?

yeah doug, do you have any idea who the fuck tucker schwinn is!?!

Maybe for the first time ever I can sneak away and get a game or two in. Doubtful.

Where can I find you during show hours Tucker?

(UPDATE) I am working on reserving the same spot with US CRITS as well as a backup spot. I will let you know as soon as I get a reply.

I'm down with playing this year, so with at least C-Murder, Kimbo, and Ruckus that means it's looking like SF may get together 1-2 teams total for this. Sounds like the SW will be well represented with LA and Phoenix both there. We're looking at Thursday night and Friday or what for the dates and times?

Still confirming the spot. It will be a one night (Thursday) tourny. Wed. night pickup if the court is made.

Check out this link.

Unfortunately things are looking bad for reserving a spot. I found a hockey rink but the rental fee is high. I am giving myself two weeks to get something confirmed before I cancel this event.

No luck with the 'cross Vegas people? How did the spot get set up last year?

Cross Vegas is a small venue. I talked to those people and they could not provide enough room. We had an inside contact with the Crit host and the crit is not happening this year. Still working hard to try to make this happen.

What is the cost of the hockey rink? Are they into letting us use it for polo? We might be able to get a little sponsor money and/or pay a tourney fee. Play pickup somewhere on Wed. night and the tourney there on Thursday.

The rink is only available Fri.night. The owner would love to have us. $500 for the night. Email me with more details and your number and we can talk.

We need to get an idea of how many people can play on Friday night and who would be willing to pay a tourney fee. Who thinks they can make it out? Maybe some local pickup on Wed. and/or Thurs. then the tournament on Fri. Please reply soon.

Kimbo, I think I overheard Jackie say she was going to this. You know, Jackie of the four fat goals in one game at pickup tonight?

I can still hear xian clucking ...

looking for a team for this. email me via the contact page.

It seams like not very many people are interested this year. For those that will be there for the show anyway. I still want to have pick up so let me know who you are and we will get together.

THANKS KIMBO!

LV Bike Polo is helping in a big way. Should have spot confirmed in a couple of days. Oh and its 2 miles off the strip next to a bar.

Team Gravy Pants will be coming from San Francisco.
So that's a whole team plus Kimbo and any other SF
folx who show up... Marco!

Lefty Bullshit!

Alright! I think the Oaklanders also have a team. Where are the Valley of the Sun people? LA? Interbike people?

if its going down 818 will dip..

Joey just created a tournament thread for this, so i'm going to close this one: http://leagueofbikepolo.com/3rd-annual-interbike-polo-tourny
