have them create a letter from hawaii bike league on its letterhead saying they support the tourny and that they sign in.
forgiveness is better than permission, even if it involves jail time.

I was contacted by Garrett in Hawaii. He is trying to put together a tournement for the end of summer. There are some immediate snags. There is only one hockey rink on the island and in order to obtain a permit to use the said rink we need a certified 501c3 non-profit group to sign with us. They only have the Hawaii Bike League to sponsor as a non-profit and they have already said no.
Tennis courts and the rink are all accessed through the state.
I offered a couple other options but it looks like what is needed is a non-profit.
I am currently trying to educate myself on this subject but to not yet have the knowledge to support him.
Does anyone else have experience in non-profit so Hawaii can host their first tourney? and then maybe i can go ;-)

Hawaii's cheap. $35 to file Articles and get a certified copy. In MN, it cost us $70.

Check out the sample NP form
http://hawaii.gov/dcca/breg/registration/forms/dnp-1-pdf.pdf
To be compliant w/ the IRS, you can't use this form. Copy it to your own document and add your 501(c)(3) text to make the Feds happy.
Our Articles (MBP Inc.'s) say:
"ARTICLE III — PURPOSE
"This corporation is organized exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes, including, for such purposes, the making of distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or the corresponding section of any future federal tax code. This corporation is organized to foster national and international amateur sports competition, particularly bicycle polo. This corporation shall primarily conduct national and international competitions in bicycle polo by planning, promoting and carrying out these competitions, and also by supporting and developing amateur athletes for these competitions. This corporation shall encourage the education and training of the proper skills of athletics, particularly bicycle polo, by promoting clinics, seminars and training courses. This corporation shall accept as its members local and regional individuals, regardless of age, race, gender, or sexual orientation or preference."
You need this paragraph to qualify as a 501(c)(3). (Well, probably not the sexual orientation part, but it's nice to be inclusive. ;)
Read Form 990
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f990.pdf
If you make less than $5000, you don't have the spend to $200 or $400 to register w/ the IRS. Otherwise, you do.
As such, if MBP Inc. sponsored you, we might exceed the $5000 limit, at which point we must (a) spend $200-400 to register with the IRS, and (b) actually file a real tax return.
Granted, we are possibly sponsoring the film fest in Mpls this year (*hush*hush* that's under wraps still), but we're also taking a percentage and running a polo tournament in parallel. Meaning: it's hard to justify sponsoring something that's not directly related to Minneapolis Bicycle Polo (HI isn't really Midwest, is it?). So we'd have to take a cut.
Really, 35 bucks is cheap. Write a two-page Articles and send a cheque to the State. Don't worry about the rest, as long as you don't make more than $5000. You will have to open a Corporate bank account, but it's fun selling out to the man, especially when the man is you.
This is the template we used in MN. I replaced the MN State Statute references w/ XXXs, so you'll want to find the appropriate Hawaii State Statute numbers that correspond (or don't, so delete the text). Also, MN requires NPs to have 3 trustees, so I've made slots for 3 trustees; HI may have different laws. IANAL.
That's right, I anal.

Judging by the time you posted you did leave the bar right after me but how were you already this drunk by 8? Did that Ashington Wapple really do you in?
PS See what happens when you don't invite Bjorn back to your place to hang out after the bar?
This is so corporate/punk it makes my head explode. But I'm glad you have your shit together.
PS: Did you create their hipoloinc@gmail account for them? Might as well at this point.
umm wow. glad i started this thread! thanks all.
Thanks Meg for the help and all the others who have contributed responses I havent read through details of the forms linked yet...but i will and we will work the system to work for us!
And that giant fuck you finger would be way to much for me to do drunk...bravo
Okay now that I have read through this it sounds as if all I need to do is type an articles letter and submit that with the hawaii form and check. Then fill out the irs form to become certified 501c3 and send no money? and once everything is approved open a corp. account.
Does the articles letter go to IRS also?
Does that sound right
no, the 501 c3 status cost 1500$. or more, or a little less. but you dont need it. your state not for profit status should work just fine to get cities to think your legit. wich from what london has been saying, your not, but fuck london.
go for state, leave nationals alone. your better off that way. or should i say this is how its always going to be
Jesus, don't make me go looking for more lewd ASCII art, beetches. London my ass, that's a fuckin' city.
It's $200 to get a Determination Letter from the IRS, but only if you get more than $5,000 in donations in one year. You're basically paying gov't lawyers to read your Articles to make sure you are a qualifying 501(c)(3).
So if your NP makes less than $5,000, you do not have to spend the $200.
It costs $70 to file w/ MN, or $35 to file w/ HI (not sure about other States) and the filing lasts in perpetuity. So you only pay the State once, not every year.
As for filing taxes, that's always free. Well, unless you owe taxes, but you won't owe taxes unless someone's on payroll. So I think you might not even have to file with the IRS... though I'd double-check on that, I don't remember (who doesn't read important legal documents while plowing through a mini-keg of 2 <3'ed?)
Meg and everyone.... Awesome.
I'm not sure about rhe local issues but maybe if the hawaii bike league were to get a few letters of support from other bike org's (anything we could muster up) maybe they just dont 'get it'?
When I moved back to Australia we joked about the idea of having an East Van v Melbourne tournament in a few hears in Hawaii... unfortunatly it seems that it's just as expensive, if not more expensive to get to as LA...

thanks all for the help and orginizing in Hawaii has been set into motion although it probably wont go through in time for this summers tournament so we are going to do this first one with no permits...
Bump. Need something to do over the winter?
Form a non-profit.
Nah it doesnt snow here so we play polo all year round....So if you need something to do this winter other then warming of balls come to Hawaii for some polo...but this is still in the works with some reforms to our approach going on as the state does not take us serious at this point.
im in maui dec26th-jan2 any chance i can connect with polo?
yea if you hop a plane or boat to Oahu. I have no idea of a scene on Maui although its where that beautiful hockey ring on the beach is located (Many know of it from Dougs flick). We normally play on Sundays. Let me know if you think a stop to Oahu is in the cards for you and we can definately setup some polo.
wish i knew you guys played on oahu when i lived on maui. i would of at least came over once a month. i lived there for 2 years and tried and tried to get people to play. and no luck on that rink. wouldn't allow bikes on it.
I got us set up for non-profit here and it was easy as hell and there is so much you can do with it. Some things may be different but I am sure you will benefit from doing it!
I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!
so it turns out after writing some articles and shit and paying the $35 we now have done nothing more then registered the "business name" and taken alot of time to look up the appropriate references from statutes and revising of articles to make sure all bases were covered even sexes and sexual preferences. Yea we will soon have a registered business...no 501c3...im gunna see how it goes with a state only registered business name for a bit...I hope it all goes well...
Our man Landon in Minneapolis or DaneilNOLA should be able to answer some questions. I will point Landon to this thread.
