Game variants for practice sessions

Since we are playing three times a week now and have loads of new people turning up, we decided to mix it up with some games with different rules. This one was pretty fun...

Sam's game:

- Regular rules about shots, tap out, etc. apply

- Start with one team of 2 and one team of 3. Each time a person scores a goal they swap teams. It's that simple.

Obviously the team with more people has an advantage, but that doesn't last long. At one stage our game had a team of 1 person against 4 thanks to some pretty sharp players. Oh, and this game is difficult to score - make sure you time it or it might never end.

bec.

Good for 2-4 people, waiting for others to show up. We play it like 21 in basketball sort of. Just one goal, everyone for themselves, try'n score. ... good for stealing practice'n general 1v1 play.

we play a game called 3 cone (could be 4 cone or 5 cone, depending on number of players. usually played with 3 players while waiting for a fourth for 2 on 2). each player has their own cone that they have to hit with the ball to score. its not really structured, but the same dab/shuffle rules apply, and it was decided that there was no stopping in order to prevent cone camping. really fun and fast

I just want to remind the people out there that Seattle still goes by the 360 dab rule so when Dustin says same dab rule he means you do a 360 not a tap out.

leon don't forget that we sometimes do a 360 when we play 2v2, some of us at least

Ive played one on one on one. Essentially, The ball is 3/4 from one goal and all three rush the ball. whoever gets the ball past half court has possession and can score. To get possession, you have to take the ball past half court and back. Makes for an interesting game. This concept came from Nick, aka N.A.SA

"If you're not cheating, you're not trying hard enough"
"If you get caught, your not SF" -United States Special Forces unofficial motto

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy.

A really fun one is a version that's alot like 3 player basketball. one goal, half court, each player for themselves, after a player scores a goal, that player gets the ball back at the half court line. If a shot is taken and missed, or the controlling player loses the ball, it's is still in play and anyone may score. play to 5, 10 or whenever you feel like stopping.

it's fun, y'all should try it. Helps a lot with ball handling and working against 2 defenders.

coffee, whiskey, beer. repeat.

Awesome thread idea bec, you've tapped into a world of knowledge!

Out other practice game in Melbourne is called the shuffle game... It addresses the tendancy some (newbies?) have to take a swing (or many) at the ball without getting control of it (or having the skills to swing at a moving ball successfully) first.

It's also designed to help address the tendancy new players have to ride with both hands on the bars (jousting style)

In this game:
=*= a shot with the end of the mallet or
=*+ a mallet hand on the bars

both count as a dab. (Shuffle to score goals for this game.)

---

As a bonus (you can play with or without this concept, or just as a separate game) Each pass to a team mate before a goal increases it's value. In this game you play highest score after 15 mins.

As you pass the ball, you count aloud, when a player from another team touches, they start counting aloud and your count goes back to 1.

After playing like this for a few minutes, your mind starts to readjust... Instead of getting the ball and thinking "where are the goals?" you get the ball and think "where are my team mates"
In this game.

We still haven't decided if individuals can just go and score goals with a value of 1 (with no passing) or if you _must_ pass at least once before you can score.

i like this idea. rookies could definetly benefit from this. are there any other games people play to help train rooks a bit more?

I like the idea as well. Team play is a lot better than a single charger bolting up court to score.
