NAHBPC 2009 - Thread #2

I had to close comments on the tournament announcement cause it's getting way to long. though you should use the sign up form on the tournament post.

Anyone flying in, please get cell phone info from your hosts/rides. It's going to make this easier.

I'm overflow/last minute housing, we're tapping all the players we can....

425 233 9872

On second thought, just make sure you get someone's phone number first thing, no reason anyone should be out of contact with 206 players

we are going to miss the dbd but will be able to make the party afterwards. i'm not really in the mood to re-read 300 posts for something i may have missed. here goes: where is the downhill ending (i.e. where da partay at) friday night?

TOP CENTER 4-EVA

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

Get on 1st ave and head south until S. Lucile St. Take a left (east) til Airport Way then head south until you see a lot of bikes and a party. Most people will be there. Also, you can communicate with the party people by dialing their cellular telephone numbers. Most won't answer, but some might and you can find the party through them.

Missing the downhill....I thought Vancouver could rep....guess not.

oh don't you worry about that. many from van will be out in full force. there are some of us that have to finish work friday and are opting to go down either friday night or saturday morning.

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

this is the royal we i presume?

Anyone driving from Chicago? I ain't got shit going on. I got some loot for gas and such, and can probably hook up a place to stay. I got people in Seattle.

Through the pure-hearted generosity of anonymous polo benefactors, I was able to get a ticket to Seattle! I am arriving worse than broke, so I'll be accepting beer and food donations from all you mo-fo's I've bandaged in the past. You'll be paid back tenfold when I finish nursing school, because then I'll have access to all the goodies in the narcotics locker.

I'm super late to the game here, but I get in at 10:15 tomorrow night (Thurs). Will there be anyone near the airport then? Messman?

gotta team johnny? can't wait to have you here. have you on the court, have you in the bar, have you in leon's open arms.

kremin, a cell number would be nice....i think you'll have good luck getting on the light rail, getting off at westlake center and catching a 71, 72, 73 bus up to the U-district. Call me, 425 233 9872 and we'll get you...somewhere. i'll call around this morning and see who is available to come pick you up.

Can someone from Van make sure Kremin's bike gets to Seattle. It's suppose to arrive today at Mighty Riders. Ottawa has already exited Van. Her life is in your hands, dude.

I was on a boat, I was on a boat! And tommorrow i get to do it again, on a boat!

I picked it up and I'm coming down Friday...

You're the best Rory, i don't care what Martin says about you.

Hi.

I had to call in a number of favors from folks I can only hope to pay back someday for their kindness but I am going to make it up. I fly in at 11:20pm on Friday and will hopefully get to the party in time to watch some folks fall over on their bikes. Seattle here I come...yet again. Balls Deep and DD"s Booster Club (Chris, Zachstar, Paul), Team Smile are all undefeated. Everything so far has gone off without a hitch. We had four courts of pick up games at once today!

Wish all yall were here!!!!! but we have 40 teams or so! My team "38 special" is also undefeated. but i'm sure there might be a few other. So much action. lot of back to back games. BBQ is going off.... seattle ladies are holding that down., weather was overcast and the high was 73ish camping on site, fresh swimming water. sponsors showed up! I think everyone is going home with something from all our sponsors this year. Played approx 170 games of round robin seeding style Saturday and I have no idea of how many pick up games. the boards are sick and fast with 8ft radius corners"like hockey rink" , 20 inch side boards. double elim today. sorry no free wifi in park, but will pass along the twitter info to someone.

Seattle, thank you so much for the great tournament this weekend. Couldn't ask for more. Good courts / boards, free delicious food, a masseuse (!), and well organized schedule. Had lots of fun talking to people and watching some great games.

what was the Hug to Polo ratio?

one to one, as per cascadia regulations.

L'il Miss Used

This was fucking great, I'm so glad I could make it out. Thanks to Messman, Leon, Wade, really all the 206 folks, and all the refs. I had a blast.

Support for players was amazing - free delicious food (lunch & dinner), a masseuse, a very skilled mechanic, energy bars and snacks, bike parking...not to mention the swag. And the kickass courts. I was blown away.

The final games were intense as always, super fun to watch. Congrats Smile! I was rooting for ya.

Thanks to my teammates Tiah and Jeremy for sticking with it through six frustrating games, and one satisfying one. You guys rock!

And finally, I want to thank everybody I watched and played with for giving me some new tricks to practice...

That tourney deserves a book, and a movie. Memorable goal: Leon's airmail pass to Dustin against Balls Deep, connected and counted. The crowd goes wild!

Thank you to Messman (you know we really won the style award!) and the game organizers and the sponsors and everyone else who made it happen...spectacular event!!

well done from london, seattle.

Kremin, sweet on the MVP!

Holy Fuck! Thoroughly, meticulously organized and orchestrated. Food, beer, sun, four courts with solid boards, a mechanic, an epic opening night party, new and old friends the list could go on and on. It was obvious that all you Seattleites worked long and hard to make the weekend run smoothly. You did a fantastic, amazing, stupendous job (for $10 a player too!!!) & I hope anyone planning a tournament in the future was taking notes.

Messman picked us up at the airport as soon as we touched down, with cold, canned liquid refreshment already sitting on the table in his camper van. He skipped out on the award ceremony to drive me to the airport, too, I owe him big-time.

Leon, who convinced me to beg, borrow, & con my way to Seattle after I thought it was a lost cause, just couldn't stop asking me if i needed beer, food, anything. What a sweetheart.

And Leslie, thanks so much for being a gracious host and for passing on that spending money from an "anonymous donor" (heh).

And Especially to Amanda, Tiah, Sean, Mike, and one fabulous, sleepy Canadian who generously funded my travel, I'm humbly, gratefully indebted to you. Thanks for a fantastic weekend.

Greatest. Weekend. Ever.

So fucked up right now so will write more later. Waaaaayyyy too many memories!!!Suffice it to say, Leon is King. Mess is King. Wade is King. Three fucking kings!!!

I love you Seattle!!!

First time I've seen you guys and I got to watch real close. YOU GUYS PLAY FANTASTIC POLO! When you dropped it freaked me out a bit. A team as good as you is out and there are still four or five games to go.

Sunday afternoon there were three perfectly beautiful, open polo courts. Everyone's bike was sitting on a rack or somewhere, mallets tucked into bags. No pickup on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Everyone wanted to just watch these teams play each other. It was grand.

Can we get a top ten recount?

Dohhh, sounds like I missed one fine polo event.
I was kind of close, across Puget Sound, camping on the grassy shore of an island, watching killer whales, exploring shoreline; it wasn't so bad.
But damn from all reports that sounds like it was an awesome tournament.
Can you do something similar next year?
Congrats Smile, well done.

"YES BRO!"
Thanks to everyone who organized and set the bar hella high for these events. Its already been said but you can't give enough accolades to seattle for this amazing weekend. It was super awesome to finally meet some of the other players from across the country I've been hearing about in tournament recaps as I have not been very active with my frequent flyer miles. You were all as ugly as advertised.
Thanks to the teams I heckled for not beating me up and I look forward to seeing everyone again soon.
Nothing like two hours of sleep and a frenzied race to the airport to make it back home in time to hop on the bike and work for the day but the hangover was worth every painful minute. I seriously fell asleep standing in an elevator.
Just a couple things I thought would help give a bit of a picture: Coach is deaf as a fucking doorknob (seriously, we should start getting a fund together for a hearing aid), Alexis loves to fall asleep at bars, Martin is afraid of rattlesnakes and loses his mind when he hears one, Rory might actually be sweatier than me but we'll have to have a contest next tourney (matching shirts and a bucket to wring out the evidence after every game?), "Chris! Skanks at your six oclock!!!Don't listen to Martin!", I think Birdseye had been drinking a little bit, Clif bars are delicious deep fried in bacon grease, there were a number of hits to various minds and I'll come up with some more anecdotes later.
Another restated comment but I've never been this sore and tired while simultaneously being this happy.
Thanks to everyone for letting me be a part of it all and I will see you all soon.
Now then. Where to next year? You guys ever want to visit San Francisco?
Love,
Casey Murder

three canadian teams in the top six, four in the top eight. three east van sides in the top eight. six of the top eight teams from cascadia, seven of the top ten.

all cascadia all the time.

yes, that is pretty impressive... but madison and RVA were no shows and they would have displaced some of those cascadia teams. many other midwest and east coast clubs were not representing either unfortunately, just sayin'. that said, i need to plan a trip and do the e. van, seattle, and portland tour of polo... polo training camp.

also, i'd like to see a full list of teams and what cities they came from please.

can i tag along?

I guess now is the time to commence the trash, then. At the Euros, London had two teams in the top 6, and 5 teams in the top ten. It's looking like Malice and BAD are coming to the Worlds. It's on. Fuck yes.

MALICE for the people.

Wait a second... We beat Poloreo! Favoritism! Nepotism! Corruption! I'm outraged.

We Beat Bob's your Uncle...how'd we place further down the list?

coffee, whiskey, beer. repeat.

See what I'm saying? Scandal!

Whatever Ohio. That's polo. We killed Milwaukee and they finished ahead of us. Any team can beat any other team on any given day. That's the way double elim works...

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

Wade, "Vomitting Armidillo" actually won the DFL game so doesn't that make "Last Minute" truely DFL?
Dustin and Cody went 1st and last.

Pictures are starting to go up on Flickr. Tag is NAHBPC.

That is correct Last Minute got DFL look out hunter brothers Dustin and Cody swept the North American with 1st and last place.

It's always a controversy, but I say DFL is an honor you have to win! I do like the idea of the Riggs brothers bookending the results though...

Oleg was his name and he is planing on making a film so who knows when it will be finished.

Oleg is making a full on documentary of polo featuring Esat Van. He's been filming for over a month now. I have no idea when he's going to edit, release and show his footage. I'm sure he'll keep you posted.

Okay, lost and found (I was thinking of starting a new thread): I've once again left one of my mallets behind at a tournament. Its a blue ski pole shaft with (*gasp*) one and a half inch black ABS tubing head, about 6" with holes drilled in it. The shaft is a Komperdell Powder babes pole with a *women* only symbol near the original grip. I have four of these mallets that have significant sentimental value as they were given to me by my dear friend who was the first woman to lead an all women's cross-country ski expedition to the North Pole (I'm not kidding). So, if anyone has taken it home and is giving it some lovin', I'd really appreciate it back and will even pay COD charges to have it shipped to Vancouver. I think I left it at the Sonadei court hanging on the back of the boards. PLEASE contact me if you've recovered it.

Greatly appreciated,
L'il Miss Mallet-less

me, right before i eat it, in the final.

BIkePoloPortlandCropBW_winninggoal

a brooks rep took this one.

frame it

that was a hell of a crash

so did you stop the goal? and what the hell is rory doing?

ha, good question

x2! he's getting mentally prepared to pour me into a car headed north.

Pieter did stop the shot. Rory is probably just starting to wince at what comes next. He is always ahead of the play like that.

Thanks to everyone in Seattle! Great tournament, and a turning point for me as this is the first time I've had a polo bike that works throughout the whole tourney. BIG thank you to Gary the mechanic - who fixed my bike up umpteen times in lightning speed (surely he's the fastest bike mechanic in the West, even repairing brake cables midway through the final), and to Leon, Montana, Dustin, and Aaron who helped me get my bike tourney ready. I have my Velocity Chukker wheels sitting beside me in my office. They are things of beauty. I can't wait to try them out on the court. Probably tomorrow.

This was the best bike vacation i've ever had. I want to thank the whole crew in East Van for making us feel like the cat's meow of guests. Pieter set the tone right from the start picking us up in style with refreshments to boot. Martin, Alex and Kenny for being the best team mates. Kenny, get well. Thanks for the support. You deserve it as much as we do. Rory, Justin, James, Lisa, Tom, Adam, Bob, the messengers, Andrea and Louise thanks for showing us a good time. Rawbie Boards, it was a pleasure indeed. Thank you for your hospitality. Anton, Ryan and Marty! Thanks for more good times, wow that was a lot of beer. Victoria Bike Polo, thanks for the games. Seattle thank you. It was the best tournament i've ever been to. Mess, Leon, Wade, Jackie, all the players and the rest of the organizing committee, thank you.

Photos and video of the debauchery from start to finish....there are a few polo shots too.

x2 to every comment above having to do with the Seattle crew, Leon, Wade, Mess, Seabass, Justin. Best tournament ever held and to this date, the greatest collection of polo skills displayed at one time.

Personal additions: David Ho - great photographer, phenomenal host.
Meg, Drew, Crandall and all of PDX - also phenomenal hosts
Messman - great MC, forever in your debt for the lift home after DBD, showing off the Polo Garage.
Irving/Swerve - for the 206ickness.
J-cola (Jason, FTL) and Becky - for teaching / learning polo in the rain.
Lucky and Jenny - getting the car, travel companions, making it work with four people.
E.Van - willing to take us, even though we never showed. It'll happen soon enough.
Seabass - for being the best polo player.
R.Murdercake -to the World's we go.

Lastly, thanks to all the sponsors that also helped make this the event. Brooks especially. Can't thank you enough.

Thank You Seattle. Such an awesum tournament, so many facets to this diamond. Rides to the airport, Evan and Kelsey, what great hosts you are. Pickup games til 3am... 15 minute games during the tourney, 4 courts, the beercuzzi... What a large prize table, a treasure trove of stuff was handed out. Well we know the team to beat now, but there were many tuff teams surrounding the podium that all could have done it I think... Thank You Mr. Johnny Midwest and Zach the New York Lefty for taking a chance on me, we played pretty good. I don't care what you call it, but mighty Seattle you must do this every year to coincide with the Dead Baby Downhill. That was a great party. Messman, Wade, Leon, Dustin, Cody, Swerve, Drew, and everyone else whose names I forgot Thank You for the memories.
