St Louis Dead-Of-Winter Indoor Lock-in Thread #2

Things to remember:

Contact Nick for housing. So far everyone who's asked has found a bed.

Bring a sleeping pad/bag/pillow.

Helmets are nice.

Bring warm clothes if you want to play outside at our regular rink(s).

You will have fun, get fed, drink some, and maybe even dance.

One seat left for the hockey game Saturday evening.

The event will be non-smoking.

Bring either an mp3 player or a CD with a 45-60 minute playlist on it. We'll pump it through the PA.

Start thinking about a game you'd like to call. Once an hour, we'll draw a number from a hat. If you're picked, you get to call a game between any 6 players. All other games each hour will be straight pick-up.

Hey lucky, you guys decided how you're going to split people up. I imagine there will be some commotion at the beginning with everyone shoving their mallets wherever they'll fit trying to get some initial play time in. You got any sort of system for when everyone gets there, how will we make teams?

Also, I imagine you will already, but bring mallet heads!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
fixcraft.net

I'm hoping folk'll be polite. There will be 4 bins next to the court where you'll put your mallet for next, next-next, next-next-next, and next-next-next-next games. If you just played, don't throw back in for a while. We figure you'll play every coupla hours, just like a big tournament.

We thought about much more complicated systems with overlapping groups so you'd throw in with X others for a half hour, then 1/2 of those would change and you'd throw in with a different group for a half hour. But none of them could pass the "drunk at 3am" test. I.E. Could such a system be fairly administrated at 3 in the morning by a drunk, for a bunch of drunks, some of whom may be sleeping, out looking for donuts, or really involved in a pinball game.

And, yes, I will have mallet heads for sale.

Columbia, MO

I don't know what titles there are. But, yeah. There's one pinball, one "big buck" type game, and a coupla other standing arcade games.

might be helpful if (even if just for this weekend) folks put their name and possibly city on their mallet somewhere. Nothing worse than dividing up mallets when there's a big wait on games and one of them goes unclaimed for some dumb reason.

i haven't gotten a response yet from nick confirming that i have a place to stay Friday night, i didn't want to annoy him with multiple emails all saying the same thing, but is there anyway one of you guys could confirm or deny

If that ticket for the Blues game is still up for grabs, I'll take it!!!

Can't wait for this!!!

What is the plan for Friday? The bus I'm getting comes in at 2:30 Is there going to be some pick up at the usual spot or some sort of polo gathering?

There will be stuff happening Friday evening. We can go to our new, secret, garage space an play some if you like. There are a coupla places to drink in town, if that's yer thing. You can still smoke in bars here.

Me, I'll be running around like a headless chicken trying to tie up last minute details. Which include the stuffing and painting of a giant pinata. Yes, you heard me. A pinata.

Not telling. You'll have to spin around your mallet three times, get on your bike, and race towards the pinata swinging your mallet over your head like everyone else to find out.

That was a close one, you tricked me with the first sentence. Second question; Will there be staff working the whole night? I image its a business with posted hours are rules. Is anyone going to fret if a cooler filled with food and non alcoholic beverages comes in?

"Fuck the pigs, Fuck the punks, Death is where its at"

Yes, an employee of the Skatium will be there the whole time. Water is free, they sell soda, and we are giving away 4 meals worth of food (meaty, veggie, and veqan-y at each meal) and a whole lot of beer to everyone who registered. What the hell do you need with a cooler?

Mike, I'll set two aside for you. The official release date will be after the event, when I'll start another thread here.

So they do or don't have an official policy on bringing in your own goods?

"Fuck the pigs, Fuck the punks, Death is where its at"

I don't give a whit about their policy. We went to a lot of trouble to feed you all good, local food to match nearly any diet. Unless you're a diabetic or vampire or something I'll be insulted if you bring in a cooler full of your own food.

As a real diabetic! I put my faith in lucky and cliff bars and honey. Ask the guys I play with, I can barely play an afternoon of polo with out a hypoglycemic incident of some sort. so for 23 hours I'll be extra prepared. See you there.

That will never work.

I know how you feel George. It sucks! I'm excited to hear CO Springs will be at this!

Midwest is best!!

I'm just talking some snacks and such, not trying to sneak in a 4 course meal or anything.

"Fuck the pigs, Fuck the punks, Death is where its at"

If you want to bring chips or something, just put 'em in your bag when you pack in. Don't roll around a cooler at a fully catered event.

I'm going! I too am excited to hear who all will be there. For Chicago- Ben, Joe, Tucker, Keith, Dumptruck, Brian, Abe, Rob G, and me. Sadly, Matt Lane is unable to attend so there will be no Midwest grudge matches. :( Maybe Tucker or someone else from Chi-town can fill his spot.

I had one of the kids I'm coming with back out. We are currently looking for a local to take his spot, but, as of now have none. So, whats the scenario? I guess since I payed for this kids spot I can sell it? So if you want to come but didnt register or something odd, there is now one registered body that wont be present, and if you want that spot, I just need twenty of your hard earned American Dollars. If this is not O.K with the event organizer just post so.
Cheers
Zac Mallard

I'll repeat something Lucky said since I caught this post just after the fact.

No your friend can't sell his spot. Contact Lucky and let him know he wont be able to come.

Too many people have already expressed lament at not being able to come so those spots have already been filled.

Correct, Sven, and thanks.

We over-sold the event a little to pad for just such a contingency (we've all had to back out of a polo thing at the last minute, to our regret) and because we aren't as good with numbers and multiple email accounts as we thought we were.

Long story short: If your friend pre-paid with paypal, I will refund their money next Monday, after we're sure they couldn't pull it together at the last minute. If they just promised to pay at the door - no harm, no foul.

Are we playing solid goals or cones?

Also

IM GOING

I'm pretty sure that the venue has standard hockey goals.

I've never played on real goals.
SO STOKED

Goals are wicked fucking sick. When you do the most amazing fucking trick shot off the cuff and that fucker goes in and rocks around the back of the goal, no questions shall be asked as to whether or not you rule.

cone vote

YIP!

Cones are fun since you can come from behind
Zing!

There are hockey goals. Big, heavy, honkin', steel goals. They aren't bolted to the floor, so they'll slide some if you crash into 'em. But I'd avoid it.

There is no voting on this issue.

Goals > cones

I've never heard of hockey players complaining that they can't skate through the goal, or lacrosse players wishing they could run through it. The only reason for cone preference is familiarity.

Well, yeah, obviously. Just sayin, the goal you use makes the game totally different. I for one am very excited about playing on goals with defined outlines so I can check if my slap shot height is "regulation".

However- What are the rules on touch the goal? Like can goal-style players put there hands on it to stay upright? Or what?

If you touch the goal to balance yourself you are considered foot down and must tap out. If you are tending goal, and get checked into it, you can use your body (but not your hands) to prop yourself up and right yourself.

{}------- lexington -------{}

{}------- lexington -------{}

There is a men's and a women's restroom. I've never been in the women's, but the men's has just one toilet and one urinal. Which seems odd, given that the legal capacity for the place is 300 persons (or about 90 people and their bikes). But whatever.

It won't be as cool, which is why you'll just have to have a Lock-in every other month from now on!

STL, you guys did a fantastic job! I had forgotten how amazing the court was until I played pick-up this evening. Does anyone have footage of my slam to the back of my noggin? I would love to see it!

Tim,

Send me all of your photos! I know you have some gems.

If you follow sven's twitter link above, most of the people who took photos linked to them that way. I've found a few by searching flickr for "polo lock-in". Any suggestions for an official tag?

Any pics of the poor oriole getting steamrolled by denverbrandon? I'm pretty sure that was our worst wreck of the night.

Also, there were a lot of flash bulbs and a few video cameras going off for some of those pinata jumps. If anyone is good with the video stuff, we may actually have enough visual information to do a 'bullet effect" video clip.

Retired.

I've seen all of the photos scattered around the internets...Tim has a secret stash of early morning, sleep deprived, between games kicker hits featuring myself and The Lazer.

Patience, Ben. I do have a few shots, but not as many as others. I'll send them to you when I have some free time, most likely, this weekend. Another spectacular crash involved Anchovy and, I believe, Tommy jousting.

Is that why I was asked to get on the P.A. and announce that you have to turn away from (as opposed to into) the other player when you joust?

I didn't see the wreck, I just thought it was a weird thing to have to say out loud.

thanks st louis for a good time. that was for sure the best court ive ever played on.

also, megaprops for all the delicious vegan food.. i mean seriously that was way above and beyond.

I had an amazing time, thanks STL

Yah, food was good. Most of that is owed to Julia (Queen of the lock-in), who arranged the gumbo and mac'n'cheese from local bar kitchens. But if you want to try and find the "pulled pork" again, it's made by match meat, a St Louis company who is starting to distribute outside of the region. If you know anyone at a local co-op or whole foods-type grocery, ask them to carry it.

Lowlights: Sleep deprivation, trying to fall asleep on a wooden floor/bench, missing my name being called for a grudge match.
Highlights: Everything else. Kickolo. Piñata. High fives. Hella booze.

This weekend > every weekend for the next umpteen weeks

Highlights: Partying with the Ohio and Savannah till late on friday night. Lots O' Polo matches, 8 games deep at 4:30 AM.Chi vs Stl Grudge match, Kikkelo, 5:30 AM Donut run in the Party Van 16 people deep, 9:30 AM beer drinking and rocking out to Andrew WK (on Sunday), Party Van Piñata, and 10 more cases of beer at 2:00 AM, Pittsburgh and STL T-shirts...

Lowlights: 14 games deep.. not really any for me!

Big Tides!

I've never seen more people spontaneously burst into tears of joy in one place... Seriously.

It was a good old fashioned bike polo love fest.

I made a bunch of friends. Played the best game of polo of my life. Stayed up for almost 40 hours straight. Told stories for almost 40 hours straight. Lost my voice so badly that I had to rely on a kazoo whistle that Brian from Chicago gave me to communicate at the bar. I can still hardly talk. If I could talk, I would tell you about the Party Van and our trip to the Donut House, and our late afternoon bike swap game, or our everyman for himself, there are no nules, 20 person game to one point! It was all amazing.

I was also lucky enough to be on the court for the first ever game of ramp-in bike polo, or Kick-olo as it is now called. I was proud to be a part of such a great community. And to get a chance to show everyone that they are always welcome in St. Louis.

Thanks to everyone for coming. And to Lucky for doing all the hard stuff so we could all do the fun stuff.

-Lee

You're welcome. I'm no good at the fun stuff anyways ;)

the lock-in yielded zero lowlights for me other than enduring the ever so painful "goodbye" at the end of it all. my vote is 46 hours next year, 23 hours just wasnt enough time!

highlights: the 16 hour drive from ATX with my homegirl, Jasmine. The city museum at night with booze and many tunnels to crawl through and slides. $10 veg brunch buffet at Black Bear Bakery and running into most of Lexington Polo there. Seeing so many familiar faces from COMO Midwests and my November Bike Polo Tour. "Hello My Name Is..." nametags(brought to you by jasmine and myself!). Knuck Tats. Ladies only called match. All the ladies who played and came to cheer. ALL THE POLO BOYS, I love you all! The Blues winning their game. The party van pinata and footdown. "Barney" and "Mouse". the court. the beer. the vegan food! delirium set in around 5am. the 5:30am party van donut house run with all my new friends (white milk drinkers, coffee drinkers, and the lone OJ drinker). the party van. one hour of sleep tucked in a corner with Tucker and Jasmine while thrash metal cranked out of the speakers just overhead at 8am after watching the first ever game of kick-olo. the pick-up piles that just never quit. the rookie game finale. packing up the car while playing Boyz 2 Men's version of "Yesterday" and getting misty eyed. slingers, etc. at the City Diner with Savannah, Philly, Chi and STL in the house. more pick-up at Mount Pleasant with Chi and STL. The bike swap game. Lee recapping Sharon's Ninja story while Sharon was still telling it (and all of Lee's stories!). The sunshine on Sunday. THE ENTIRE STL CREW! Yall are sooooooo amazing! I think I love yall the best- good good people! Jasmine and I had the best. time. ever! Thank You!!!!!!!!!

Thanks every one(stl dudes especially) for the awesome weekend.

Highlights:Party van doughnut runs, polo with all sorts of new people(especially Brad from Pitt), talking with all sorts of awesome dudes and ladies, big tides hat, Slayer and Andrew WK, knuckle tats, after lock in pick up for another few hours, every one for themself game to one, playing with my little brother, Awesome mechanic volunteer(wish I could rember his name, he rules),

Lowlights: 14 games deep of waiting

His name is Steven, here is what he wrote on our local blog in the days after the weekend:

"...If I haven't said it to you already, thank you for your appreciation of me there, I only witnessed about half of the greenbacks that appeared in my toolbox and I wish to send thanks for the other half.

Frankly with the possible exception of the MS 150 rides I've worked, this group of riders was the most polite, considerate and patient that I have experienced. Racers are the worst...."

Absolutely, awesome hanging with you out there. It was a pretty amazing weekend all around.

Snagged this one of you doing knuckle tats: http://randomprecisionphoto.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/kay...

And this of you and the endless mallets: http://randomprecisionphoto.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/mal...

OK. I've sorta finished the accounting. There was a rush at the door, and more than one person was tallying this info, so don't feel insulted or singled out by this, but:

It looks like Charlie from Columbia, Donny from Bloomington, and Keith from Indianapolis owe us 20 dollars each for their registration fees.

It also looks like we owe refunds to Samantha L from Ft. Lauderdale, Eva L from Sarasota, and Amanda from Tampa.

Is this correct? Does anyone know these people and can cofirm their presence/absence from the lock-in?

Retired.

i can confirm sam, eva and amanda all are owed refunds as they weren't in attendance.

If you can pm me the email addresses that they sent their payments from originally, I can refund them today. I'll try to look for it, too, but a lot of folk used someone else's paypal or didn't include their name, screen name, or home town with their payment.

Thanks.

tomorrow ill call donnie and let him know. ill paypal you by tuesday, is that okay? we can maybe get keiths money too, ill ask zach. sorry about that mixup.

No need to apologize. There was a mad rush at the door. Frankly, only two people slipping in is probably a pretty good record. Let me know if/when you get a hold of them.

Thanks.

*edit. I just heard from Indy Keith. He did, in fact, pay.

Retired.

i handed you a twenty when i walked in...

OK, I believe you. You're now marked as "paid".

awesome video. fucking great game! that was the game of the lock-in right there.

Thanks for the stories!!

Heading out in the cold party van for a 5:30a donut run, delirious invention of the next variation on bike polo...awesome!

I'm interviewing for a job that reports to a guy in St. Louis (I'll be staying in SF) so maybe I'll get a chance to play with y'all soon.

Thank you Lucky and rest of STL for such a great event! I wasn't sure what to expect but it definitely was above and beyond! Evvaaaannn you are the best host ever! It was great meeting/partying all of the STL crew + Ohio. It was good to meet everyone, Chicago I am so excited to play with ya'll when I move there. Austin Moe and Jazz Hams, great to finally meet you after hearing so many good things! Lexington girls that I met, I adore you, way to represent! Last called game was the best, rookies united! This needs to be a more often occurrence in cities everywhere!

Bjorn just redesigned the Mpls Bike Polo blog so I decided it was better late than never to write a re-cap of the Lock-in. Check it out.

Accounting transparency (now featuring fuzzy numbers):

We took in about 1900 dollars from registration.

The Skatium charged us 800 for rent, and another 250 to open the bar.

We spent about 150 to stuff the pinata.

The rest (700) was spent on beer, food, cups/plates/spoons and the like. We bought way too much granola.

Anyone interested in hosting such a happening should feel free to email me or any StL Bike Polo member for more detailed information. I think that the biggest deal of this event organizationally was taking in money beforehand. Pre-paid registering had not been done before for a polo event that I know about and it really made a difference for us.

Not only did it set the limited guest-list early (knowing how many people are actually coming to your thing helps meal planning/cost estimating immensely), but it gave us cash to buy stuff with beforehand. Unlike other tournaments I have helped host, no one from the club had to put anything on their own accounts/cards and hope to be paid back.

The second biggest deal was paying a flat fee to "open the bar". We tried everything we could to get a beer sponsor to either chip in money, product, or both, but it just didn't come together. The Skatium has a liquor license and sells beer for 2 a can, but we were able to convince them to take a lump sum and let us bring our own. I'm positive that this made the lock-in more fun for all.

x2. thanks again!

10 days later and I'm still blabbing to anyone who will listen about how awesome this event was.

Is there a 2011 STL lock-in in the works? Last year was tooo good.

If you can dream it, you can do it!

Hmmmm....

Midwest is best!!

*crickets*
