Bench Minor 2 Draft results
Tonight the six Bench Minor GMs are going to be selecting their teams.
You can watch the draft happen live. Live chat at http://webchat.freenode.net, use the channel "bikepolo". Confused? Instructions below.
Check out the results of a kinda wonky poll conducted with 25 players over the weekend.
Update:
See image above for the results. Order was from left to right in the first row, right to left in the second row, left to right in third row, etc.

Last minute advice to all the captains: ALWAYS BET ON BLACK.
MR. BEARD MAN NYC: YES. A LOT OF WHAT I SAY AFK IS YELLING... ESpecially as we get later into the evening. NICE PHOtoSHOPS BTW... they were funny... I would post it in that other thread, but it's only a matter of time before heavy handed KEVIN "IM IS THE OWNERER IF BIKE POLOZ COMMUNICAZTION" WALSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH locks the thread and we lose your comedic genius to the archives. I hope we're on the same team so we can celebrate together.
PICK ME AND BEARD man!
It's funny... it took less convincing last night to get two wonderful, smart and beautiful ladies to get wild with ole' idiot me than to get picked for stupid bike polo bench MINOR (PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN?!!! FUNNY YOU SHOULD MENTION THAT!!!! ASK AND YE SHALL RECEIVE) HAS THE WORLD GONE TOPSY TURVY!!!!?????????
AB sucks, don't pick him. he's worthless. completely worthless.
heh i just wanted mumford to have the last word.
ok in case anyone really cares (i don't think you really do, as you're so good at cross-thread references, but not as good as Ben H used to be) i locked the other bench minor 2 thread cause it hit a kind of arbitrary limit of 300 comments. and if you stil really care (it gets even more boring) it's cause i made a decision in oh-eight to have threaded comments on this site (you can reply to people and your reply appears indented below their comment). But that means you can't have paginated comments, i.e. all comments must appear on one page, otherwise those subthreads get confusing and you can't find the comments you haven't read as easily. Since now more and more threads are going beyond 300 comments, so i might make the LOBP forums "flat" like maybe most people are used to on other forums, where you have say 25 or 50 comments per page and it paginates infinitely, and your replies appear at the bottom of the thread. You know what i mean? i know you do. GRATUITOUS CAPS LOCK.
my reply to your comment:
I smell a fundraiser campaign from LOBP soon.

THAT MEANS AT LEAST $5... YOU SHOULD donate $10... i mean seriously... you probably spend hella time refreshing this site to see if Ben Hunter is posting and that costs Kev money. Fucking pony up and send him a couple bucks... idiots.
Paginate it! Threads were sweet but it seems they've been outgrown.

Justin's good. I'd pick him if i were a GM again.
Also, even though 24 people think i suck, i'm playing on new non-broken equipment, and i invented this thing. and draft day is my birthday (seriously! celebrating the big three-eight this year). so even though this is a sad, sad comment, pick me 'cause i want to play.

I'm surprised Jamie[Boston] and Ben Zoller[Richmond?] are at the Bottom of the list. They are both awesome players.
players like Jamie and Bigg Werm are the kind of players that add a ton to a team. good attitude, no ego, they want to be there, and they're grinding it out. i agree. pick those fools!
when the shite hitz the fan , the other GM's are gonna be trying to buy me off you for vast quantities of polo schwag , but i shall not defect coz i got your back , your front and both your wings all at the same time. And a frenzy of goals shall be shot and scored and blocked and they shall know our name , so much so that in years to come even death shall tremble (care of dan finger) when it comes to take us to a better place where polo is full contact and you can be re-incarnated after every joust and get to play with and against everyone everyday.Chicago It"s my kinda town.

If there's another court at the location there should totally be a Minor Bench Minor.
Just make a regional, friendly bench minor with players in your area. It's got to be the only popular tournament format of the modern polo age that you can pull off with just one court. Which means that any city with a regular place to play could host.

I'm gonna call bullshit here. Joe you dropped Jake off your team to play with Brian. Did the rest of milwaukee kick you out the club? No jake had you stand up in his wedding. There were 5 other GM's who didn't pick jake either and you aren't calling for their ousters. I can't believe you are posting shit like this.

We're discussing it in Edmonton now. We're 99% likely to have a tournament the weekend before NAs and I proposed today we could make it a Bench Minor style tournament. We have, in my opinion, one of the best hockey rink courts I've seen in polo. Killer boards and impeccable surface with top-notch lights. Only 3 hours from Calgary
A decision to be made is how to choose the teams? Have teams based on regions with a regional rep? This would depend on who would show up from what regions. First come first serve? Would that be regionally or randomly placed on a team? What are your thoughts? Would you come?
I can't/won't make two trips to AB in a week...but if I had the time off I'd be there.

x2 to more inclusive format. psyched it will be in ottawa - and i'll try and make it. but i'm also all for other cities trying out different styles...city v city bench minors? city elected players that then get drafted? i'm marginally skeptical about 2 separate drafts, etc, but i could be convinced.
Think sequential not separate. First set of captains choose their teams from everyone registered. Then another set of captains are taken from the remainder of undrafted players and they in turn draft their teams. Boom like lefty: two bench minors, assembled loosely around skill levels, happening side by side. Have the finals one after another sunday evening. This allows the event as a whole to be much more inclusive while keeping the tournament itself about excellence.

is there a city out there with one smooth, lit dedicated court with full boards that would want to host a regional BM? city vs city is fine but region vs region would be awesome! the planning wouldn't even be that crazy...just housing and food. 50/50 male/female per team...and mandatory equal playtime per player...
50/50 male/female per team
This is unrealistic, some clubs don't have that many ladies who play.
Pro-friendly bike polo!
and some ladies would rather be out playing polo than sitting at home writing a 1200 word polo profile.
that's why I said region vs region...every region has 4+ girls, no?
yeah. and then maybe we could play hackey sack all day and sit around a fire holding hands singing kumbaya
suck it Phaneuf!
how does region vs region equal hackey-sack? coed polo equals kumbaya? if your region has only good males then that is a reflection on the exclusivity of your polo scene...good players make everyone better.
it's obvious the royal turkey only wants to play with cocks, gobble gobble gobble

"ok Mr. Schwinn fucking Armstrong!"
www.burrobags.com
We could do that....unfortuneatley we don't have one smooth full board lit court....we have two. Side by side....will that still work?
I hate this idea!
I dont want to be picked cause I'm a girl, and they need to fill quota, I want to be picked cause I'm a decent player.
...but you didn't get picked...nor did any girl...are you telling me that there is not a single polo playing girl in the draft that would be more valuable to one of those teams than any of those 48? you truly believe every one of those picks was merit-based?
No. Not at all. But just because precedent was set to pick on non-merit characteristics, doesn't mean I want any part of it.
I'm a good player. If BM was expanded to more slots I would have gotten picked on that basis (myself and the rest of the solid players that weren't picked up male and female). Almost everyone on that draft board is better then I am in some aspect of court play. I don't agree with all the picks, but I also can't equivocally say "I'm better than ______." There are only about 4 people on the draft board I would even question the skills of, 4 out of 48 isn't a very high percentage. I travel a lot. I've watched those guys play. They are good. I even know their strengths, and some of their weaknesses. Can you tell me which girls you think should have been put up instead of them? I can't. I also can't say anyone should have drafted me when Messman, Andre, Arlyn, Drew PDX, etc were still up for grabs. There were plenty of males that are better then I am that didnt get picked either. I shouldn't go over them, unless you were picking on non-merit characteristics, and that is exactly what I think is BS.
I do not want a requirement for anyone to pick me because I'm a girl. I want them to pick me because I'm the best person for their team. And I'm going to practice my ass off until I am. I don't speak for all the ladies when I say this, but I know there are a couple others that support me.
There is however, an issue Cecily raised earlier, mentioning how female players are undervalued... this is the true issue. Start paying attention to how much better your ladies are getting, respect them for it, and treat them like equals on the court.
Kiersten for prez!
suck it Phaneuf!
yeah what he said!
suck it Phaneuf!
the problem is with the whole "bro"/"dudebro"/"douchebro" thing being so prevalent in polo that I don't think women are going to be accurately valued anytime soon...
why should we be okay with coed tourneys, ladies' army, etc...and then so against an inclusive BM? I'm all for equality but it takes some force/pressure to get us to that point when the "bros" hold the "keys to the kingdom", no?
I'll name names off site if you like in a private strategy chat...but I saw quite a few players that were individually skilled but bring little to a team in the BM environment...especially when such a fluid and dynamic game calls for constant lineup changes (on both teams) and players need to be adaptable on the fly and able to play all positions.
someone mentioned players that "grind it out"...that's part of it...
I didn't make it 50/50 because I think that's the only way girls could get in but because that seems like the only way girls can get in with how things are currently (even with female GMs that have competed in ladies' army and know everyone's skillsets) and THAT is BS!
I'll name names off site if you like in a private strategy chat...but I saw quite a few players that were individually skilled but bring little to a team in the BM environment...
there's no need for secrecy. we're all friends here

I don't really give a fuck and my excuse is that I'm young
in edmonton we're thinking about hosting a bench minor and having the captains all be local players. this will pretty much remove any bias for bros and cliques because not many of us know a lot of players from around north america, and alternatively don't care about maintaining them.
i also think having a local captain for each team will allow us to introduce ourselves and our host city to as many people as possible, and just have a good polo time. i have never played in a bench minor, but from what i gather this is what it's all about- getting as many people as feasible together for some good mixed games and secondarily a competition.
Let's have serious fun:
Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...
What he doesn't understand is that there will always be room for both. When you get better at polo than louisville is (no offense, guys), you need more structured outlets to allow for a style of game that will allow you, personally, to keep progressing.
He ties the fun he has in polo to himself getting better. Yeah, so does everyone else, and things like bench minor let the players invited to it to progress to their own personal goals. Sorry that everyone can't get better playing by pick up in louisville. Some people have already exhausted that part of their career in bike polo, and need something else. And a drafted tournament allows that by guaranteeing great polo. Big fucking deal. Everyone plays polo for fun -- some of us just don't like setting ceilings for what's possible within the sport/ourselves.

Exactly.
Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...
eh, this is a bullshit argument. the problem here is that chicago isn't able to accomodate, in appropriate proportion, the number of talented, deserving, good-enough-to-be-there (subjective, i know) players who were registered for the draft. that's a failure. the people who were "invited" are not the only people who want or deserve to "progress toward their own personal goals" outside of their cities. i mean, seriously, get over yourself.
you want a chance to play "guaranteed great polo"? make it to the finals of a significant tournament. don't use a non-merit based (yeah, i'm not a fan of GMs saving spots for their "homies" - it happened) "draft" system to make a very small percentage of you feel good about yourselves.
you want guaranteed good polo that helps you progress beyond the ceilings of your own cities? move to portland.
wow, you are really raw about this. but your post has left me confused... are you agreeing with fuckgas.org that we're all taking this too seriously? or are you mad that we're not taking it seriously enough(i.e. what you call a non merit based draft)? any GM who was "saving spots for homies" (which so far is every GM from both years) had a good reason (besides feeling good about themselves). i can only speak for myself but i made every choice with the intention of winning this tournament, i didn't have enough picks for undeserving homies. you imply bench minor is insignificant, i smell sour grapes.
move to portland? get over yourself.
sorry - i didn't mean to sound sour or to accuse anyone of misconduct. you're right, though, i am raw about this. i'm frustrated with the structural aspects of this tournament (not enough facility space to meet demand, no real good way to rank people besides how they describe themselves and what a few other folks think about them [i was asked to rank people and backed out due to my frustrations around this tourney], GMs getting pressure from all sides to choose their friends, NO ladies picked, etc). it's symptomatic of much larger frustrations with bike polo that i'm having these days that i won't get into here and for some reason it is bubbling over the top with this tournament. i apologize for my tone, but i know i'm not the only one who has these feelings. we're at an awkward growing phase in the organization of bike polo, and i just want the community to be thoughtful and aware that the decisions we make now effect the ways in which we grow.
as for portland, it's true! i have gotten a trillion times better since moving here - breaking my own glass ceiling, if you will - and i think most of the other folks who have moved here recently feel the same. pete - we heard you and your lady are on your way! can't wait to have you here. it really, really is a great place to play, with a great, supportive community. as i know are many, many other cities around the world.
sorry if i was rude in my post, i woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't sleep. i posted that in a daze. i agree with you that the draft pool was deep enough that we could have made another team of 9 (at least), but i was not in chicago yet for that decision so i can't speak to why it is the way it is. certainly nobody foresaw this much demand.
the fact still remains that when you have a draft you have to draw the line somewhere and not everybody is gonna make the cut, for whatever reason. and each GM brings a different perspective and strategy to the table, i like that. i would be way less interested in watching a bench minor tournament comprised of randomly selected teams. or if we had an objective means of measuring the poloskillz of individuals and a computer balanced out 6 teams to be as equally skilled as possible, that would be just as boring. i like the human drama aspect.
I'm moving to Portland in June and Nick Kruse is my teammate for all upcoming tournaments in the foreseeable future. I'll relay any lessons learned theere to him via telegraph and/or carrier pigeon.
Pro-friendly bike polo!
i dont care if ottawa is hosting 2012. this will not have a draft nor will it have gms. plus im not even calling it bench minor either. its gonna be teams of 8 playing each other with only 3 players on the court at a time i call it bockey. i know alot of people will have fun with it and alot of haters will hate it all i really do know is that its gonna be wicked fun.

I think it should be teams of 9. just seems to make sense....3 full strings if you want.
I think it should be 5 or 6. ESPECIALLY if you're allowing people to form their own teams.
Someone correct me if im wrong, but NYC was going allow open teams last year for BM until they realised all the A players were going to get together and there would only be 1 or 2 competitive teams.
Dooyyyyyyyy! Theres a reason they use they draft!!! Seriously!
If you want self formed teams you gotta cut the numbers down.
X3 for what NookieRick said. I was stoked to be on the same page as all those players and the fact that i still have a chance to beat there asses in Calgary is awesome. In fact most of them haven't even qualified for the North Americans yet and I shall be attending as many regional qualifiers to make sure they all don't .(this is said with total respect for all non cheater , non dick move ,call it as it is without the need of a ref to corroborate it , exceptional poloistas )The rest of you know who you are.
"So this is how it ends"MACHINE
You haven't qualified for North Americans yet either Machine.
I did notice that even though Joker is from the South West region he did not show any favouritism to players from that region which shows in the fact that the draft does not contain one person from South West. Total respect to you Joker for basing your decision on analytical polo and not on favouritism. That only hurts when I breathe.

WTF! I didn't get draughted? I'm kicking everyone out of the club. Nate help me out here.
Bench minor are fun, but fuck, they put to much shit into local communities. We saw it in greifmasters 2, when you put too many people from the same place into the same draft, and then into the same team, you put shit into city mood. In Greifmasters the teams was from town or country, i think any team get his part of shit talk and conflicts, all but france...
x2 to following the coach. To play with this format, you need someone taking decisions and these decisions need to be followed by the teammates. This is exactly what made Switzerland loose the final against France. They were really organized and the players weren't anytime discussing Greg's decisions, the exact opposite what we did.
think that even a good captain can't make it thourght local conflicts. too much players from same teams-places, make the team weaker, because of friendship matters and all stuff like that.

This might be the most I've said on here. bear with me, I've had a beer. And I recently learned how good it can feel to rant sometimes. but, shit fuck! I'm finally bringing myself to read all this. I've needed to take some time to decompress after the draft so i tried to stay away from the LOBP for a day. Actually I was busy working all day yesterday and stayed at a friends house, without the internet, last night after work and I don't have an I phone. ANd jonny sent me a message asking if I liked what he had to say, so I had to look. anyway yes, thanks jonny, haha you're the best!
but damn, the draft was so fucking nerve wrecking. but so fun and amazing and I'm so honored to be able to strategically pick my dream team. So far I've chosen very carefully. I've chosen based on who I've seen and a little of what I've heard and what I admire in a player and a team, and who I wanna play like when I grow up. My last two choices were so hard to make and maybe I messed up. I was debating between too many of y'all. Capt. Jake, I'm sorry you didn't get in, but I'm not sorry I didn't pick you. You were never on my list. Does this mean I'm a traitor and I don't give a shit about mke bike polo? No, I don't think so. All our bros who made it in were on my list but it just wasn't in the cards I guess. I'm sorry so many deserving players didn't make it. But you all knew you were signing up for this with the odds against you, yeah? Last year I was like, fuck that elitist tourney. and I didn't sign up because I knew I probably wouldn't make it. The problem is, there were so many people who could have and should have made it but unfortunately wernt dealt in the cards. And I guess I don't see that so much as a problem, but an exciting factor and nature of this style tourney.
Alright, now let's forget about this damn tournament for awhile, yea? It's four fucking months away, christ!
you weren't on my list either.
My last two choices were so hard to make and maybe I messed up.
Not a confidence builder.
At least the trade window is still open.

So after much discussion with the other GM's The Tamale Lady of San Francisco has chosen her dream team consisting of the widest variety of vegan , vegetarian , pescitarian, omnivoric and carnivoric polo playas ever to grace a Bench Minor. "Ya want hot sauce with that amigo" , i heard her say just yesterday. Mi Casa este tu casa

So did each GM pick 2 back up playas in case drafted members can't make it. ? Where is the substitute list and has trading begun yet ? Are there any discussions about makin one whole Seattle team ? Does nobody care anymore coz they were,nt picked ? Let's hear from the GM's as .We wanna know some of your thoughts on trading. Did you all get the poloschwag promised by your chosen team mates ? i was promised a truck load of ass if i was drafted but had to settle for a 5.0 full of Fanny instead.

it's all God's fault, he started it.
I'm still confused on the GM selection. Why wasn't their equal representation for east and west coast female GMs?? No offense to Bird and Mai but there are also a lot of great female players out West and down South! yeah southerns girls.
I've invited people to be the GMs for the past two years. they were players i'd seen at regional and national tournaments. Last year, i couldn't get anyone from the West Coast interested in this tournament. This year, Seattle had more players drafted than any other city. the main goal was to cast a wider net each year. that will continue.
another goal was to ask/select GMs from new locations each year, so i love the idea of a more females from West, South, and other locations that haven't represented yet.
Bench Minor #1 GM cities: NYC, Ottawa, Madison, Boston, Chicago
Bench Minor #2 GM cities: Milwaukee, Lexington, COMO(then he moved to Chicago.doh!), Toronto, Seattle, LA
It'd been East and Midwest focused, because that's who was interested in participating. No longer the case.
I asked Ben Schultz (Chicago) if i could run this draft, as I had the year before in NY, really because I enjoyed talking with people from new places and organizing the process. He and Chicago BP were gracious enough to allow me to do that. Ottawa is hosting Bench Minor 3, and we can discuss how they want to improve the process after this tournament occurs in Chicago. That may be the Mallets of Mayhem running the draft and selecting GMs.
Because I know people would take issue with the exclusivity of the process, I wanted to continue to mold it through year two, with hopes that people would be excited about the potential combinations more so than the inevitable flaws and growing pains.
i nominate nick regan as the male east coast GM for the 2012 Ottawa Kumbaya MOM BM.
and tony said he will put on his lip gloss if he can be the female east coast GM.
Mallets of Mayhem Bowel Movement 2012.
I think you did a great job this year , bumpin up the interest in A Bench Minor. Next year I hope to be bumpin up some Westside Connection , that,s if Pistolero will hit me with some rockin tracks. Ya feel me bro
