Las Vegas Tournament

Las Vegas Tournament

After attending Polomania, and having a fantastic time we want to host a tournament to promote Polo in town. We want input on when it should take place and how you would want it structured.

P.S. not affiliated with interbike, Dates should not conflict.

hell yes. vegas is one of the cheapest places to fly to from canadian cities. maybe some time when the weather is starting to suck elsewhere? november?

With some notice we could get a Colorado crew out there.

One of my favorite tournament experiences lately has been the bench minor format on the warmup/seeding day (Saturday, usually). take everyone who showed up, divide into teams of 6-10-ish, play long periods (in N.M. we played two 20-minute periods with 10-minute break for each game). Play elimination-style 'til there's a winner. Fun stuff. We got this done with plenty of time for swiss rounds afterward, though there were only 10 teams total in the tournament.

Also if you have a small court, a 2v2 tourney is always fun.

seriously. sometimes i cant get to a town until early Saturday morning and i lose out on the Friday pickup. and then you cant even get in a game of pick up saturday morning, by the time swiss rounds come up... you realize you haven't swung your mallet in 3 days and then you get trampled...

i dig that bench minor style. lots more polo for everyone!

give blood. play polo.

totally true. x2 for warmups!

Post the date, and I'm there.

off season, when the weather is starting to or already sucks in other places, cheap travel weekend. november or december will give you enough time to prepare.

Hello Vegas! Great to see yer club stepping up in the region. Im sure you will have no problem attracting many teams for a tourney. But as others have pointed out, do it during the colder months. In re: to format, it really comes down to the courts you have available. If u only have one, either a limited number of teams or consider doing a bench style tourney. If u have 2 or more at yer disposal, you have much more flexibility, and can host a good two day deal. Swiss rounds on Saturday, double elim on Sunday. This format is the most popular. In either case myself, and im sure other nearby clubs will help you run it smoothly. AZ, LA, and Frisco all have many experienced members who will show you the ropes. And AZ in particular might have some nice nets too, if u ask nicely. I kno LA can bring 2 of ours.

Welcome aboard, and if u have any questions, drop me a line, as yer regional rep I'd be happy to help.

Viva las vegas

November seems to be the consensus.
How does everyone feel about mid-late January?
It is far enough out for everyone to make travel arrangements, still cold every else ( 35-45, cold for us).
We have two outdoor courts lit to 11pm. In the next month we will be constructing nets,we have been using pylons.

Late January is usually when Phoenix/Tempe holds the much-loved & anticipated Desert Polo Invite. 2012 will be DPI 4, and they're trying to have it be an NA qualifier again this year. If you're looking for AZ/Colorado/California to show up to the Vegas tourney, late January would probably not be a good time.

I think Southwest clubs will attend regardless of when it is held, and of course we won't skip DPI4 either. However, the snowbirds may only want to do one or the other if the tourneys are close to each other. Vegas u should get at AZ peeps and check with them on their date. I think a December or earlier January date could placate all.

Depending on the format change for the polo tour in 2012 DPI4 may be way too early in the season for it to be a qualifier. Just a heads up.

We play polo in the ATL

I sure hope not. February weather in AZ is just right. Any later and it might get too hot for polo.

november or december is a good time frame. almost nothing polowise happens around then, and you can easily win the hearts of many by even having polo in the winter....try to keep it at least 2 weeks before/after the Desert polo invite...

December seems to crowded with the holidays.
November Is only four months away, is that enough time for everyone to take care of their obligations and travel arrangements?

Also we play in a park with two outdoor hockey rinks near a skate park, two cons to that. The park prohibits alcohol and it 5-7 away from the strip.
However it is great to play on and it is a great set up.

Fixinthestreets

I'd vote for (early or mid) November, if your club can put it together that soon. It's more than enough time for attending players to make travel arrangements, especially in such a cheap season to fly.

Two side by side rinks sounds fantastic. Polo players are adept at keeping booze on the DL, in fact it's "prohibited" at most of the tourneys I've attended. If you want to make extra sure, print your tourney's logo on coozies and hand them out/sell them cheap. That worked pretty well in Portland. I don't know enough about Vegas's layout to understand why the location's a downside.

I'd say go for it. And keep in mind that with two courts, it's unwise to allow more than 36 teams into a tournament.

I'm looking forward to playing in a new city!

LV, LA and AZ should either have all their events evenly spaced apart.. like one per month during the off season. or lump them together over a two week period where you would draw travelers looking to hit more than one tourney and spend time in the warmth.. that being said i prefer a small pre-season mini tour making the most of time spent off..depending on where worlds are next year we will all being saving a huge chunk of time for a far far away place...maybe... what about feb. around the valentines and presidents day?? i'm forecasting a tumultuous next 4-5 months for polo in general...after the dust settles we will have a clearer picture of what we need to see happen as far as tourneys... February will give enough time for this..

I wasted my time and my team's time by going to last year's Las Vegas "tournament".... It was by far the
worst 'tournament' I've ever been to...

I sincerely hope that something better is coordinated this time. And I don't know if InterBike would be a plus
or minus with turnout... but damn...

We will consider going again... but get your shit together.

(sorry to sound harsh, but last year was an expensive waste of time)

Lefty Bullshit!

That really bothers me to hear that. We are the west side polo club, not affiliated with interbike or bike bucket.
You can trust that your bad experience is going to drive us to our best to change your impression.

I truly believe that our passion for the game and willingness to seek help will result in a successful tournament, one of many to come.

If November is acceptable we will commit to setting a date by the end of the week, and flier by the end of the month.

+1 for november

November should be good for us snowbirds!

+2 for November. The Southwest needs a November tourney!

Welcome and keep in touch with Alex, Machine, or myself so we can help with resources.

Mike T. - Phoenix Bike Polo

November could be great... our annual SF tourney is near Halloween...

Lefty Bullshit!

is anyone listening to the internet? hello? give it some time buds...we want a good hit...

+1 for November. You have plenty of time to put something together by then, and those attending have plenty of time to arrange travel. I would really like to see one something December, but it conflicts too much with everyone's holidays. I like Vegas in November, family/ vaca in December, January to recover from December holiday, Phoenix in February, the weekend after the Superbowl!

edit: Feel free to inquire with any of us for help, we've all been through the ringer once or twice by now and would be happy to share our resources/experiences.

this space intentionally left blank.

Under promise, over deliver.

It's a good principle to follow.

And yes there are some talented organizers out there who will be glad to help!

We are thinking, November weekend of 11th

Excellent!!! Boffo!!! Make sure to make it an official tourney (with a cool flyer) under the "tournaments" thread once y'all get everything squared away.

sweet, 11/11/11 in Vegas. Are we gonna leave the courts and gamble somewhere? Can a casino sponsor your tournament?

I don't think casinos run games of Threes, but we might as well inquire ;) Are you going to try to make this? Bring Scooter if you do. Or maybe the LOTCR needs to make another appearance ...

Does anyone have info on sporting event insurance they have used in the past?
This would greatly aid in securing a location.

Fixinthestreets

We've used McKay but it is spendy. $800+ I would guess

http://www.silentsportsinsurance.com/

At DPI III, Jinna from Thomas Bike shop in SD took out a policy through her existing business insurance as a special event. I believe this was more affordable but I don't know the specifics. That being said, if you have a good relationship with an LBS, they may be able to help you save some $$$ if they're willing to take out a rider for the tourney on their business insurance.

Mike T. - Phoenix Bike Polo

Post a date and info asap, I'd love to fly out for this! I've always wanted to go to Vegas!

It will probably be 11/11/11 we just need to secure the location

November 12th - 13th
I have submitted the tournament, how does it get publish?

Fixinthestreets

Tournaments aren't published immediately. It should be live now.

Los Angeles will be roll"n.. Team "Valleros" Pistolero,Joker and Too $hort will be there..

West Coast is the Best Coast!!

date confirmed, location subject to change

Noice brodudes!!! Be sure to post court info, tourney info, housing contacts etc on the tourney page. I'm soooo there!

Im tentatively planning on this tournament but im going to be at interbike too! Any chance for some pick up games during interbike?

you should come out, we play every Wednesday and Sunday. We may do another night if there is some interest.

I'm still on the fence about bringing my polo bike to Interbike...my impression from playing various places during past visits was there was a slim Vegas crew and no consistent location. Can you post a google maps link and time to where you play and how many you might expect? There are lots of great road rides and other cycling events that would make me bring a diff bike, but if you can solidly say you'll have 10 or so people and a great spot, I'm in.

We always play like clock work Sundays and Wednesday, 8pm-11pm, we only have 6 regulars and 10-20 that show up sporadically.
It's 2 great court At Desert Breeze park (spring mountain and Durango), we actually had Frances who is attending inter-bike from Eureka come play last night and he enjoy it.

If you come we can car pool, just contact me before 6pm to let me know.
If you don't still have a great inter-bike.

Fixinthestreets

We should also mention that if there is interest we may play on nights in addition to Wednesday and Sunday.

Thanks! I will see you Wednesday night for sure.

Thanks for legendary polo, LV. It was a pleasure meeting you all. Hope everything works out with the tourney. I hope to get a team together...
