cool video!

the surface looks like that Toronto surface we used for friday pickups
www.mkebikepolo.com

No, the Toronto surface was much more slippery than the 818 court. The 818 court is pretty good.

MALICE for the people.

Nice beard Alex.

MALICE for the people.

Man, that video is really well made.

Weather looks a whole hell of a lot nicer than it does in the Northwest right now.

Great video, I need something to remind of what shorts and t-shirt weather is all about here in Vancouver now that we have the most snow in twelve years today. The court was not too slippery, just a little more than I was used to-- about as slippery as it can be without becoming a total crash-fest. I'm a front braker so I was particularly concerned because a slippery court can make my bike useless a la the Toronto pick-up court, but it turned out to be an advantage because we had so much more stopping power than the skidders. It was possible to endo the bike effectively without losing the front wheel. Those fixed- or rear-brakers with thin 700 tires were at a disadvantage, I haven't seen as many people hit the boards because they couldn't stop at a tournament that ben hunter wasn't at. One great thing was that the court was incredibly smooth and offered superior ball handling, and the boards, oh the boards are something else. Great people, you can just tell how big polo is going to be down there.

I didn't think it was that slippery, or that much of a problem for back brakers. Most of the problem could have been that they weren't used to how long it takes to stop. If you know the surface, you know when to put the brakes on.

This surface give you confidence in your cross-court and long passes. I can't remember any passes or one timers getting fucked up by the surface. I love hockey rinks, and I hope more people try to establish polo as a sport that is played in a rink. The guys that run the rink that we play on in the summer in Philly aren't convinced that polo is a sport that should be played in a rink, therefore we can't get the permit all year round. I'm hoping we are working towards establishing polo year round in the rink, and I encourage other cities to do the same.

Princess...polo seems to be huge in LA already, and I'm sure the next time we are there it will be a whole different story.

i agree, but you could just see how it is ripe to explode beyond the fixie scene. they've got the court, the weather, and the people to become a real force in bike polo.

I totally agree Mark...Rinks are the way to go for bike polo in terms of court size and such. Opens up the game, and the boards, ohhhh the boards. This is much better than dicking around on small tennis courts. And if and when polo becomes a bit bigger, the infrastructure already exists to have pick-up/tournament/league games. This surface was fine...a little more slippery than i was used to, but not like Toronto...that shit was whack, on a front brake anyway.

Our surface in toronto is pretty slick, mostly to the new-comers though. It's all fun times in the end

hey, if people has pics of this tourney id like to see them.
meanwhile, here's alex being caught making good use of the
release forms we all signed... to mop up beer someone tossed on the
court.

there were release forms?

yes. i heard one announcement through the megaphone about having to sign one, but was never made to do so by anyone. those are my feet mopping up with them though.

seriously though, where are all the pictures alex? get the 818 on that.

fixcraft.net

the release forms were a response to the parks dept. people getting worried about us being there and hurting one another and suing them and that all came out of the motocycle incident. for those of you not there, in the middle of a game we all heard an engine, a huge skid and a thump. i looked over to see a woman flying off the seat of a motorcycle into the outside of the boards of the rink. it was a serious looking accident but, luckily, neither of the two motorcyclists was hurt very badly. i thought of ben hunter at first but then they didn't get up.

Messman,

The dude hitting the wall hard at the beginning of the video is Seattle's own Drew. He does make it look good though.

Damn that surface does look slick, we don't play roller hockey in texas so there are no courts like that... at least not that I'm aware of... I know of one basketball court with a 6" curb around it for street hockey... seems dangerous though...
