Greif Masters 2011

Greif Masters 2011
Friday, February 4, 2011 - Sunday, February 6, 2011
Host club:
Bikepolo Karlsruhe
Court size:
1 Court, 32x18m

Format:

Bench Minor

Teams: (10 players, incl. captain)
- Benelux & Denmark & Poland
- England (doesn't exclude London players)
- France
- Germany
- Italy
- Karlsruhe (because the people that are organizing this, want to play!!!)
- London (because they are the fucking biggest bikepolo-scene in Europe!!!)
- Switzerland
- Spain

Option 1:
Without playing on Friday (only throwins on Friday):
games: 2x 15 min, round robin
= every team has 8 games = 36 games = 18 h

Option 2 (we prefer this one):
or if we decide to start playing on Friday already:
games: 2x20 min, round robin

Final:
The 2 best teams will play in a 2x 30 min final.

Forming the Teams:
Every country has 1 week to tell us a captain (we don't care about the process). If a country can't find a captain, we choose one out of the country for them. The captain has to organize his team as soon as possible.

If there are some Americans willing to come, They can play as an extra player (max. 1 per Team). Just in case some people want to travel transatlantic.

Referees:

Every team has to bring one referee (he has to ref 4 games and can be a player)

Registration fee:
20€ per player

Location

Messe Karlsruhe
Messeallee 1
Karlsruhe
Germany

this looks sweet!

i'm curious how this format will develop over time. Having played in three now, I think their should be at most 9 players for an hour long game. We played with only 8 against nyc who had 10 players in the last one and even then one of our guys didn't get to play too much. 7 would have been enough. That gives you two solid lines and a substitute.

it's fun to have a big team, but if you're traveling as the 10th player and only get to play five minutes a game, that wouldn't be too much fun. for this karlsruhe tourney it seems like there will be a lot of games(if a bit short), so maybe everyone will get to play enough over the the whole tourney to justify traveling.

anyway, wish i could be there!

I hope some of the guys from across the pound make it this year.

im seriously thinking of coming to this. can i draft an American team? we will have a hadicap only 5 players and bri bri will play freewheel left handed. i am 100% serious of an american team

140x65

Hey Kremin,
as we are already on our limit with 9 teams (36 games in 2 days),
the idea is to put you guys as an extra player on European teams.
And im sure every captain would be 100% happy to have you to support his team...
I really hope some of you can make it!

1 more team! 1 more team! 1 more team! 1 more team!

+1!!

Beaver Boys in tha house?? We are fucked.

Hi there... some questions...

I´ve been looking for some flights for our team and the cheapest one (that in the end will no be that cheap) is with ryan air... and I don´t believe in ryan air and I really don’t want to fly with them... then I found another option that is with germanwings flying from BCN to Stuttgart...

1) Anyone has anything to comment about germanwings??
2) is that easy to go from stuttgart to karlsruhe??? We need a ride!!!!
3) does any one has another recommendation about flights??
4) when you guys are going to decide the format... because if is option 1 for sure some of us will fly on Friday morning and if is option 2 the I’m almost sure that on Friday we will play but not with a complete team...

dankeshen

Hi,

flying to Stuttgart is fine. German Wings is also okay. I only travelled with them once, and it was of course better then RyanAir. There are train directly to Karlsruhe. If you have booked the flights just tell me the details, and I can tell you the best and cheapest connections to Karlsruhe.

About the Friday: As soon as we have contact-details of the captains and players. We'll ask all players if they are around on Friday already. If there are already enough teams on Friday, we will start these games. If not, we Start on Saturday (but play shorter games). We can decide that on short notice...

Bitte Schön...

Can't wait!

Here, a stupid question: And how do you choose who plays from your team, in a match? Let the three best play all the time no? I guess they would eventually get tired, but it is not such big of a phisic feature to be able to play 30 min of bike polo.

and how do you choose who's going, if more than 10 are able to come? How do you do it in Karlsruhe?

Hi there,
that's all the captains job. He picks the people for the team, and he tells who is on the court.
And believe me, it's not the best way to just let the 3 best players play all the time...
Cheers from Karlsruhe,
Hannes.

Seriously please let an American team in. Tickets are cheap @ this time.

Hi Bribri, why not just play with the arrangement laid out rather than certain European cities VS the US of A. I'm sure it would be more fun for everyone participating that way which I think is the ultimate goal. I know you are a great player but imagine playing with team France vs Carlsrue (with the help of Kremin) in the final...

You should participate regardless.

Hi Hannez, You're the best. See you in Seattle! Love you Karlsruhe!

EVBP
nsbikepolo.com

I really love the idea of having an American team at the Greif Masters.
But that would mean 9 more games. That's 6 more hours that we just don't have.

Don't you like our idea, of you guys supporting different European teams?
I think this way the level between the teams would be more equal.

Book your flights! Book your flights! Book your flights!

btw: We'll have free housing for you...

Hannes.

Definitely understandable. Can Kremin and I get on the same team though?

What if the captain is playing? Should he still be deciding who plays?

I quess every team will decide this on its own... I think the Londoners want to play with a non-playing captain/manager...
At the Bench Minor in Paris last month my Captain (Greg from MGM) did a great job as a captain and a player at the same time...

Italy play with non-playing captain too..

hi tobia!
I'm David, I'm Hungarian, but I'm living in Torino now(I even have a carta d'identiá, I'm not a tourist).
Is the Italian team finalized? Do you have all the 10 players? or is there a chance to get in? would there be a chance at all for me to get in?

Good team Krs!

Is there any specifications of the rules?
If every team have to put refs, it's essential to have a clear ruleset (specified sanction for every fool, not the actual and usual "ref discretion" stuff).
Maybe that BM involve also more rules or more specified ones. When can a team switch line, how,? Does the time stop between goals and restard, how long etc.. etc..

Hi Clement,

Two things about the rules ( http://greifmasters.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/rules.pdf )

"If there is a left-handed player willing to charge, he is only allowed to
do so if the other team agrees."
How does it works? If I'm left handed and I'm going to rush I have to tell it to the ref and players, and they have to aprove it? Its dangerous anyway...the rule must be about the side you rush.

"If an offensive player actively deflects the ball (including using his bike or body) into the
goal, it will not be called a goal"
Does it mean no wheel-goals? boooring. I think that, if the ball comes from a offensive player shut it counts as a goal.

_______________________________________________________________
El Vaquilla hubiese jugado Bike Polo.

For the left handed rush... i think the most simple is:don't make any lefty rush, there's plenty of players on a team, not just 3 this time.

For the second objection. Im agree with camiloko, including the "passive/active" deflection like ehbpc 09 is a bit boring and pretty complexe too ref. For me it was pretty clear that most of the time the simpliest rule is: "shot is from business end, the goal can count after any deflection anywhere EXCEPT the shuffle of a teamate".

So the rules about the passive - active deflection is always in?

I'm lefty and I agree, no rush for us (possible if there is a lefty in each team and both want to do it, or if my teammate has a problem with his chain, so regularly).

CALL ME DADDY

William Jr. wrote:

We put this one in, just in case there are two lefties willing to charge.
But in most cases it means: No lefty in charge.

What about timeouts? Are we having them? Can they be called on possession, or only after you've conceded a goal?

For mechanicals/injuries only?

As there's 10 players on a team, perhaps it's easier to say no timeouts, (except in the case of serious injury) and the captain just swaps the player with the problem.

birminghambikepolo.com

Agree, no timeout needed in my opinion. Maybe just if the guy is completly dead in the middle of the court and can't move. In other way, if your bike broke, get out.

Exactly. No time-outs.
Only in case of serious injuries the ref can call a time-out.

"Referees and Penalties:
... The referees’ duties will be: ... Call injury time outs for major injuries. ..."

Hey Hannes, I've been thinking about this alot too for the Sydney Bench. Obviously its not so important to have a timeout for mechanical. But I've though about giving each team one time out per game - can only be called by the team captain when their team has possesion. Can be used as tactical or mechanical. But over an hour game it kinda makes sense. You can call a time out in most team sports.

If you are a goal down with 3 mins to go. Use your time out and organise which players to put on and what you wanna do with the time you have left to try get that goal.

Ciao,
"It is legal to lob the ball (’throw’ the ball with the mallet) and/or to travel with the ball using the
‘ball joint’ cupping style of carrying the ball (with any part of the mallet head) but you cannot score
with either method. If ball is cupped up to goals, it has to be passed once before scoring."

Any shuffle by a side holed head mallet it will be considered "ball joint"?

Only if you pin it against the floor.....

This is crazy! Watch that wonderful trophy Marco Flore from Roma Bike Polo made for the Greif Masters 2011!!!

http://vimeo.com/19203932

Thank you so much Marco!!!

It´s just strange why we "the Portuguese" are never able to get any of our teams on the Euro champs or others in northern europe, even if we try to get our team(s) in whith the amount of time necessary. Maybe the Bike Polo isn´t that democratic as it sounds to.
Even our friends from Holland, Spain, and Italy say it´s strange...

hey Mosaik, can I ask you how long have you been playing polo and in how many tournaments had you play, especially international ones???
normally people will invite you once they know you and once you show the love for polo.
there is atourney at the end of the month in Cambridge, UK, it is an Open, so everybody is wellcome, it will be a great ocassion for you to meet a lot of people.

Hey Mosaik - a bench minor tournament in which teams are chosen by captains are, be definition, not democratic. Captain's will choose players they know (that is, they know how the play, who they would play well with, how the would play with the other players on the team). It sucks that you guys aren't going to be there (more polo peeps = better), but don't take it personally - especially on this occasion.

Hope to see you guys at a tourney somewhere soon! (if you can pull it off, I'd say to as Rik says and try to make it out to Cambridge. Should be awesome).

Sorry to hear about that... For the euros champs, if you registred your teams before the closing of registration, you could have play like every other community (our system make that every lil' town with only one team could come). So it was more than an open tourney, nothing against you or your country. Asking for a slot 3 month after closure is hard for any organizers on earth.

Hi Rik, We have been playing for three years now, not that much, but we entered Sexy Bike Polo, and we have been in the Euro in Geneve(watching and playing throw ins), in the Worls Berlin (watching and Playing Throwins), and in BCN latest Tournament at BFF wich we placed fourth. Aren´t we travelling much? Or do we have to get flight miles in our Curriculum Vitae? If so, please tell us how much!

Hey Mosaik
If you are planning to come to Karlsruhe for this, you can play in Benelux team.
I'm a captain(manager) and register myself as a player too, but I'm happy to be a non-playing manager.

I think KA choose those teams based on their previous edition.
Thank god we have a Benelux team for this since there was only one NL team entered last year.

If you guys keep coming to tourney and expressing your interest/ability toward other communities,
I'm pretty sure that you will be invited in near future for some events like this.
Make some flyers, stickers or t-shirts to spread the words. (maybe u r already doing em though)

Hi Taka, hope you´re ok since the Geneva tournament, first of all thanks for the invitation, but now the flights are a bit expensive, we will try to enter a litle more contests, but yeah, sometimes things aren´t about merchandising...but good will.
Anyway we will meet again soon and play once again side by side! Still on your mini bike i hope!
