4 days?

this is starting to get insane.

yeah if i have to use 5 days of my vacation days for 2011 to travel and attend this you wont see me at many other tournaments. 'im hoping you mean that there will just be party time pickup on thursday.

Can't go pro with a job bro

when the opportunity to go pro arises ill reconsider my options. You want to sponsor me Gema?

I want winners!

Didn't see you at a lot of tourneys last year Jake. You sure you're taking this shit seriously enough? Bra up, bra.

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

im back on track martin. got my 2011 priorities straight.

I think it's 3 days, like in Madison and maybe a wildcard tourney on the Thursday for those who didn't qualify. TBD.

2010 NA is the perfect model. two days of swiss rounds, then elimination.

yah depending on how the NAH set the qualifying up. Hopefully we will know soon. I am having a meeting tonight and I will try to get it set up ASAP! August 5,6,7 for sure!!

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

yessss third to sign up, hope i qualify

One less flight to worry about for the season. Awesome. Edmonton may have a little event the weekend before as well.

definitely should do that, makes it a two weekend trip

hope so

Please post this soon, so we can make both.

Deaddog- sacbikepolo

i'm gonna fly to this one i think, the drive would kinda suck.

Keep your standards low, and morale high.

I would like to sign up for the NAHCBP take down in calgary . If I need to qualify just tell me how and I'll see ya in the friends box trash talkin and takin it easy. If I don't need to then DITTO

"So this is how it ends"MACHINE

its my first time
and i will have 9 months to get better :D so i hope im somewhat good enough to cross the border

give blood. play polo.

So fuckin' stoked for you guys. Congrats!

**UPDATE**Just a warning we might be moving the date back 1 week due to changes with NAH eligabilty and some other things. In order to make it work it must be done I am sorry if this upsets anyone! We will have the Website up this weekend and we will let yall know about anychanges!!

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

When will these dates be official?

The website is now running, feel free to check it out. www.2011nahbpc.org. It still has a lot of work to be done on it so I apologize if there are some small errors. Trying to get everything worked out!

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

Way to be on top of this Calgary. The Web site looks good; I look forward to updates.

The date will most likely stay the same.... But because the wild card tourney has been added on we may have to move the date to accommodate all the people who will be setting up event. In Canada the monday before is a long weekend so lots are not sure if they can get it off. So early to mid January we will update the possible change.

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

anyone planning on making this trip form the states make sure you're even allowed into the country. for real! i totally forgot i'm not allowed in due to their zero-tolerance policies. if you have any sort of a criminal record or even a suspended license you're possibly fucked...

have fun! damn it.

talk shit and burn bridges

You know those policies go both ways....You should see how much paperwork I had to fill out to get into the states....It's all worked out now, but just ask anyone who travelled with me last year how much fun the border crossings were. I got hauled into the special room every time for about a year.....they finally put a note on my file, and now they leave me alone.....

Justin, what are you doing to get a special invite to "the special room" every time?
Are you sure you're not enjoying it, a little? :)

Can you guys not get pardons or somthing like that I have friends who have records and have come over. They had to talk with their lawyer but it all worked out.

Revised North American’s & Wild Card Tournament information.
NAHBPC Qualification and Registration:
• Players placing in the top 8 teams at each qualifier can register immediately for NAHBPC. Players are not required to stay on the team they qualified with. A team registering for NAHBPC must have at least two players that placed in the top 8 at one NAH qualifier.

• Players placing in the top 9-12 of teams at each qualifier can register immediately for the NAHBPC Wildcard tourney. Players can mix teams around, but at least two players registering on a team need to have been on a team placing in the top 12 at one qualifier.

• Official qualifiers results will be published by NAH.

• All qualified registration must occur before July 15th at 12 noon MST.

• Any unclaimed wildcard spots will be made available online for all to register at 12 noon MST on July 18th. No qualification is required for this very limited number of spots. If the Wild Card tourney is guaranteed to fill we will be accepting 10 more teams to register. Closer to the date we will announce the number of open positions.
• The number of wildcard teams advancing to the championship tournament will be determined shortly after the close of qualified registration (July 15th at 12 noon MST).
Wildcard Tourney:

• One day Swiss Rounds tourney with 32 - 42 teams.
• The number of spots advancing is equal to 64 minus the number of qualified teams that have registered for the NAHBPC. As an example, the top 8 wildcard spots will advance if 56 teams register for the NAHBPC.

For registration please go to www.2011nahbpc.org. Registration will be open for the Monday after the Tempe tournament. If you are having any problems with it please email calgarybikepolo@hotmail.ca, state your issue and a number or email address that we can get back to you at.

When registering:
When each regional tournament is finished, a list of eligible teams will be posted
on the 2011nahbpc.org registration page. If your team qualified for The North Americans you will register by selecting the NA’s registration Button. If you qualified for the Wild Card tournament you will select the Wild Card registration button. When you register there will be a text box for your team name and another text box for all 3 players names and cities will be required. The qualifying teams and player’s names will be sent directly from the NAH.
Please!! Make sure that your team has qualified before registering or you may not get a full refund. Your money will be returned but you will be responsible for the refund charge.

Registration is open for those who played in DPI3!! Congrats to the top 12 teams!

Hey lads n lassies of Calgary is it true that we all need to be doing some serious altitude training for Calgary . All us sea level dwellers are panicking a wee bit down here at ground zero . Should we be drinking snakebites thru a straw , wearing plastic bags on our heads for pick up , sticking cigarette butts up our noses and breathing deeply or wot ?Help a coast dweller out here Mountain People.

"So this is how it ends"MACHINE

the elevation is about 1000m, so 600m less than where denver is at. you'd be better off spending your training time honing your body to a diet of alberta beef, dodging hummers and 1-ton pickups, and brushing up on your hockey knowledge

or playing polo in Denver... ;)
but seriously adjusting to altitude doesn't take too long unless you smoke/drink too much.

Look the phones been ringing off the hook since that last post. Read it again LA bikepolo it says altitude training not attitude training though lord only knows you should double book a class of each . Love Ya Angels with Mallets

"So this is how it ends"MACHINE

Steve you crack me up! don't train for anything and just make it real experience!! And don't for to wear full body protection!!

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

Am i gonna have to come up and show you canadians how to play polo?

ha ha ha

Take it Sleazy

hey Joey i hope u put on a few pounds cause it get alittle ruff in those boards... ;)

update your website. there are new tournaments in the calendar, loads of them are regional qualifiers.
and your registration post doesn't work.
the website looks great though!

great work calgary!
i've told my family that lives there to go to the tournament so they can understand what the hell i mean when i say i play hardcourt bike polo!
wish i could be going to this. have fun everyone!

Yah sorry I have been on vacation for the last couple weeks so I have been away from the computer. I am not sure what you mean by the post does not work? is it the 404 error that you get? If it is that is just because there is nothing there it is a short announcement. Let me know if that is not what you mean. Thanks!

Who is the local expert on disappearing into Banff for a week after this tournament?

I can probably help you out....what are you looking to do in Banff? Mtn bike, rock climb, ? etc? It is the STD capital of Canada too if you're into that, but if you want info on the bar scene you'll have to ask someone else.

What about the best swimming pools in Calgary?

I like your polo.

yes your favorite outdoor pool is in easy striking distance from the court location. I think this information should not be too widely distributed however so as not to get too many people arrested at the same time!

I'm looking to do some hiking. Maybe about 5 nights on trail seeing the biggest and best of Banff.

I'll send you an email tonight. I'm doing some mountain climbing either the week before or the week after.

Ya I have a guidebook for scrambles in the Canadian Rockies that I can lend you if you want to do some hiking, and get to the tops of a few mountains, I can lend you the book and recommend a few good ones. And if you want to do some climbing I'd be happy to take you out for that too. I have gear I could lend you, and good knowledge of the area, I've been rock climbing and ice climbing for almost 20 years.

edit...didn't know you climbed Bottles, gimme a shout anytime you wanna climb in the area. I have a pretty mean 4 X 4 too which is nice for getting into the Ghost area, which has a lot of spectacular climbing, and no crowds (due to the difficult access)

x2 on the Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies book.

Little Yoho Valley and Lake O'Hara are the most spectacular, fairly accessible hikes and scrambles, but they're tightly regulated and you need to reserve backcountry permits well ahead of time.

I highly recommend Ha Ling Peak, just outside of Canmore, it's a pretty easy 4 hour hike and this is what you end up at:

The last time I did it I left at 4am and caught sunrise up top.

so glad to see they changed the name since i last hung out around there

Yet they still make and sell "cheese nips" at every local grocer...huh?

screw that, its Chinaman's Peak. People get all carried away with the politically correct crap. The name was there long before the PC police were around, I say leave it as a reminder to the way things were, and how far we've come. Do we need to change the names of the Cleveland Indians, or the Washington Redskins too? What about Indian motorcycles? How about cars? The MG Midget? or the Impala, or Jaguar, that probably pisses off someone in PITA. Or worse the Cougar...that could offend PITA and women over 40....where do you draw the line?

**edit.....too funny, Cory and I both posting our PC replies at the same time....fuckin redneck Albertans eh! oh wait.....sunburned western prairie inhabitants.

man...this makes me miss my back country days in Alberta/eastern BC!
wish i could be there to hike and climb with you boys.

So I'm thinking about taking the Amtrak from Milwaukee to Shelby, MT (26 hours) and then renting a car there to drive up to Calgary. That round trip Amtrak ticket is about $400 right now and, depending on how the border crossing goes, the drive is somewhere around 5 hours. Renting a car would be pretty reasonable if a couple of people did it together. It'd also be nice for exploring the area a bit. Anyone interested in the train + car rental or just the car rental? FYI, bringing a cooler full of beers on the train is acceptable if not encouraged and checking bikes is totally free.
Think about it...its cheaper than a plane and more fun if you have the time.

do this! i took this train once and it's fucking awesome. you can also get off in Glacier Nat'l park, drive the backroads alongside rocky mountain foothills. not sure if you can rent a car there tho.

you also might get one of their "hot deals" off the website, i did Madison-->Portland return for $150. not sure if you can score that in the summer tho.

I'm very interested. Let's talk about this over polo some sunny weekend.

Stoked Stoked Stoked.

The only reason anyone does anything.
For the lulz.

I will most likely be there as a free agent. I managed to wangle a work trip over that period.

I wasn't sure where to post this so I will start here. I clicked the pay link for NA's and noticed that it was $75 this year ($60 last year). I was just curious where all of the $10 add-ons that all the teams paid was going. ...by simple math it looks like around $3,000 for this year for the qualifiers, plus whatever is going in from the Calgary tournament..

Its paying for my $800 flight from DC

$15 is going to the NAH. The rest is going towards the tournament.

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

Right okay, so 64*15 = 960... for this tournament plus the 3,000 from the qualifiers... so what is happening to it at NAH? Just curious.

Zach your guess is as good as mine, i know some of it is going towards vinces podium software but I also heard banana boat covered that so?

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

Just realized that this is going to be in a mall parking lot... what is that surface like?

can we get a sample of the surface sent to Milwaukee so we can tune our rubber and mallets accordingly?

Wow that is one hell of a request! I will send you a 4x4 slab C.O.D. When I get back from the Saskatoon tournament I will take a photo close up so you can see. I had a photo in the bid so if Kevin or Ben read this feel free to send the parking lot photos up.

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

Words have their uses. For example, parking lot surfaces can be:

- new asphalt, soft during the day in the sun, smooth but sticky, ball sticks to the ground

- old asphalt, hard even in sun, rough and bumpy, ball moves like popcorn, tires shred after a day of skidding

- _______ fill in blank

the surface is pretty consistent.....it's dodging the cars and parking blocks thats a bit of a bitch......

**(I'll try to put up a good descripotion soon, we're going to survey the lot and lay out the courts this week.)

It is an asphalt parking lot that will give good traction if it rains, like every parking lot in Calgary it will have a bit of a slope to run snow and water off. It has some cracks from all the freezing and thawing but we are going to be filling them with cement. Joel it would fall under older asphalt . Attached is the photo of the parking lot just to give you a better Idea.

Just a little heads up. The information about housing and The BEst Western is up on the 2011nahbpc.org. Also a list of Teams and players that can register is posted and you can register now if your name is there and can do so as well on the web site.

I like your polo.

holy... 16 out of what, 72 teams?

not 72 Max 64.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

The teams that will qualify for worlds from this tournament will be announced soon. You will be able to beleive it on the internet at that point but please leave all speculation behind you.

Update for 2011 NAHBPC (Calgary, Alberta)

July 5, 2011

This is the final run down on how the 2011 NAHBPC is going to be organized.

The wild card tournament is going to be held on August 4. It will be a true wild card tournament as ANY team can enter. Pending on how the NA’s fill up that will determine how many teams from the wild card tournament will qualify and carry over to the NA’s tournament the next day. The online registration can be found at http://tinyurl.com/nahbpc-2011-wildcard-reg . The registration will open on Sunday July 10 at 11 a.m. Calgary time (Mountain time). I am looking to play in the main event in calgary and have qualified but don't have a team for now. You may know me, you may not. ask around, ask your friends in Ottawa or T.O. I also know a second person who has not qualified but would be into joining up with 2 qualified folks as an option... let me know.

I am the second player allan is referring to, haven't qualified but I can hold my own, solid goalie and good in the middle for set up plays. Ask anyone in Cascadia for references. Any other loose qualified players looking for some fun kick ass polo in calgary should contact either me or allan, call or text my cell 2506862775.

not qualified but confident in clearing the wildcard. i'm a carrier/passer with a good shot. also pretty effective in being a mobile goalie. played at pdx and prairies 2011, east van 2010 and 2009, uk and euro champs 2010 and a bunch of other less serious tournies.

email me via my profile if that sounds good for you guys

Looks like I might be coming to this after all....

edit, yeah I'm in.

Will Curry is looking for a team as well, he qualified for the NA's and is a good player.

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

He also has one of the most awesome bikes in polo!

I'm looking for a team too! I didn't get qualified but I'm a solid player even by Cascadia standards. I was hoping to branch out of my normal group of teammates. I'm well traveled and can give references or even a resume of my skillz. Somebody pick me up!

I have played a couple tournaments with Kiersten and I will vouch for her for sure! If I did not have a team I would be playing with her! Pick her up you wont regret it!

If that doesn't work out Im also keen to get to Portland and Seattle. But I'll be down to visit this cities before Worlds either way, but my preference is to start North then work down.

All kidding aside, relax, we got you covered. We aren't going to let anyone starve. (even if you are a "special needs" individual) This isn't our first rodeo.

Thanks so much for all your hard work on this Trev, this is gonna be awesome!
I just have a couple of questions:

The registration page on the site still shows the options to register for the wildcard or the NA's, I'm going to assume the Wildcard option should just be ignored now... but what about all of the teams that have registered for the wildcard on the spreadsheet, should they register again for the Na's or is their Wildcard spot just being bumped over?

Also, I just signed up and paid for a team using the NA registration option on the website, but I can't find an up-to-date list of registered teams, am I just missing the link? would it be possible to make the spreadsheet of registered teams open to the public to view so that we all can know how many and which teams have registered?

Thanks and take care, looking forward to seeing you all soon!

I have been at a folk fest all weekend so I am going to update them now. I was also going to ask people that if they are vegatariens if they could please let us know so that we can get veggie burgers as well. Also it does not matter where you register because everyone is going to be on at the same tourney.

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

Two of the Saskies are Veggies, but we're not assholes about it.

2 days left to get your wheel cover order in for NAs!
email me jinxywheelcovers@gmail.com

give blood. play polo.

I'm looking to get from Van to Calgary sometime before the NA's, anyone have a spot in a car? I wouldn't mind splitting a rental, but it looks like everything is booked up because of the long weekend before. I will chip for gas/snacks/fireworks/etc !

If there are actual contenders out there contemplating going to this and looking for a third let me know.

Serious inquiries only, I can only afford to go to this if you have the capacity and motivation to qualify ... i.e you won't contact me if you are only looking for a token female goalie ... that type of polo is boring and the kind of polo I will not waste effort/ time and money on ... I play the game not a position.

If you don't know how I play get in touch with someone from my club they'll fill you in on what's up, sorry that i'm not comfortable self promoting

How can I go from city to the airport on Monday night late? I want to get a ticket for Tuesday morning around 1:00so I need to leave city around 10 pm?

if there is no availability for a ride, which i doubt, there is an express bus that runs from downtown to the airport, it runs from 5am-midnight.

the players handguide will have all this info in it as well.

Look forward to seeing you in Cowtown!

B.F.P. 403

These guys are A players, they deserve a quality 3rd so they can qualify for Worlds in Seattle. If anyone is out there let me know and I can give you more details and hook you up with them.

Available, and qualified. You've seen me play.

I hooked them up with Zach already before you posted...are you coming to Calgary for sure? I can keep my eyes open for someone still looking for a teammate if you want.

I think the Victoria girls are looking for a third? look on the registration page they have a ? as the third?

So looks like Justin, Benj, and Sara are all single players looking for teams....hmmmm, how can we find a team for all THREE of these players.....if anyone has any ideas let me know.

Registration is closing in a few days people....get your teams registered now!! Also if anyone is still sitting on the fence as to whether or not to attend this epic tournament, let me just add a little extra incentive by letting out a little secret....rumor has it that George Micheals himself will be making an appearance at the NAHBPC in Calgary this year!!! You wouldn't want to miss that would you?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaoLU6zKaws&feature=youtube_gdata_player

So now that this is only 2 days long and I won't be running a burger tent Hope and
I were gonna jump into this and will need a third I think ...

For the love of God ..bring me Rawbie boards!!

Really, has it been changed to 2 days now?

Northern Standard

Well no .. but a lot of us still need to work on friday.. so just hoping to get shuffled into a afternoon/evening bracket that day .. so really its more like 2 days .. sorry for the confusion.

One day till registration closes and Will from New Orleans and I are looking for a third, send one of us a message.

If you are still looking for a third I think that Sara from L.A. (aka Danya on the LOBP forums) is looking for a team. She qualified in Portland against serious competition so she is top notch. Look her up, you won't be sorry.

Will from Sask and myself are looking for a third for this. I've got the net covered, so we need a shooter to round out the team.

hey Niel,
I might be interested. I have a good shot, lots of speed and great ball handling skills. let me know if you guys are still looking for someone?

I qualified by finishing 5th at the Midwest where I won the dark horse trophy and i also played at the bench minor in chicago 2 weeks ago. Hey all,

Nanaimo player looking for a team for NA's. Will be in Calgary either way, so only a flaky commitment is required on your behalf. Only been playing since January, but I play like a vet.

Good brakes only slow you down.

Hey, send me an e-mail! My team is dropping like flies.

Nanaimo Brad is for real, don't let his relative newcomerness fool you.
He's a hockey player that knows positional play and can score from some sick angles.

what ball are we using?

When you say "we" do you mean "you". Its the last day of rego and the Beavers still aint on that list.

Chigger-filled cheap plastic orange. Shut up. Quit trying to run the fucking tournament.

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

Such language.

The only reason anyone does anything.

so...37 teams?

The only reason anyone does anything.
For the lulz.

Beaver Boys, Alexis Johnny Hunter, and all you other last minute guys.....good to see you on the list, I was starting to wonder....

I saved some tent space for last minute peeps if needed .. hell plaxton even got setup with a room so a couch my be up for grabs .. Msg me if you want the addy.

hey cory, i could be up for some tent space. if its still an option email me details and location at allandykstra@gmail.com.

The only reason anyone does anything.
For the lulz.

Still holding out for Rawbie boards as a third ... if he will fly from his coop *shrug* .. if not .. put your hand up.

I hope to god the old man makes it.

The only reason anyone does anything.
For the lulz.

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

Looking for people to Ref? So far it is myself, Justin, Kevin and Lewis any one else care to help out? Please let me know ASAP!

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

Looks like I'll be there. Sans team so I can ref the shit out of these games. if anyone loses their third or whatever.. get at me.

will ref some games in the shifts my team isn't playing

I will also ref some games preferably not in the brackets I am playing in.

x3, I reffed a lot at Midwests in Bloomington

I'm always willing to help out with the reffing. Just don't schedule me too deep into the brackets, I'm too hands-off to ref the more contested games.

I'll rotate in for reffing.

As long as I can do it with a beverage in my hand.

Mike (grasspolo) & Franzky will ref too I do believe.

What does it pay?

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

Wow, really Martin? Well if I can get a team for the triple crown I will ref for free! But don't worry we have enough people now!

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

for you Martin, this one time it's free, but next time you have to pay.... we'll work out a rate later.

jas ass-hole will ref...he said he got some good reviews on his reffing in toronto...unlike someone else who let games go longer than time and made bogus calls...

two asshole's don't make it right"
BUTT three asshole's make a good team"

if anyone needs to be in the PM bracket on the Friday for North Americans please let me know asap. as far as I know at the moment, just Corky's team has requested this so far. Need to know in the next 24 hours please.

Well we have enough refs for sure now! thanks all!

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

NiceGuys are hosting a "RodeoKat" on the Saturday at the Polo courts. Prizes to be won, much fun to be had.

I will personally supply this tournament with 20 red balls. I say we have a poll who wants red who wants orange?

I will personally supply this tournament with 20 red balls. I say we have a poll who wants red who wants orange?

What's wrong with Orange? I assume it's going to be stupid hot next weekend- orange balls are perfect for that.

i assume by orange you mean the calgary orange not franklin? i like the density of those but not the diameter or weight. franklin reds are ok, and calgary orange are ok too. temps will be 22-25 celcius

i want calgary balls

I am also liking the orange.

Hey folks, Me (Pierre from madison) and Drew from lexington were supposed to play with Birdy from milwaukee at NA but Birdy wont be able to come at the end. Anybody still looking for a team? please let me know ASAP (pierredelamare7@gmail.com). Hopefully somebody out there is still looking for a team.

Hey everyone, Koyo and I (Erik) from seattle are registered but our third dropped out.. I hope someone out there is still looking for a team? Please send word as soon as you can if you are available (domohawk@gmail com).

For all out of towners coming to Calgary, if you will still be in town on the Monday after the tourney ends I'll be doing a little Mountain bike trip if anyone wants to experience riding in the Canadian Rockies. Bike loaners or rentals will be available, if you're interested in going please let me know so I can estimate numbers interested and make appropriate arrangements. Let me know if you want to do an easy/intermediate/hard ride too so I can try to pick a ride that is appealing to the majority of the group. (Calgary peeps welcome too of course...lemme know if you wanna come)

This sounds awesome Justin,i hope to jah i can come along... C>O>P!!!!!

Northern Standard

You can use my bike if you want chris?

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

I'd definitely be interested- I went mountain riding on my polo bike in Dallas, so I think that'd be okay. I'm definitely a beginner though, so I wouldn't want to try any ride that isn't completable to someone with only polo skills. Apparently they transfer well though, no one believed it was my first time out on the trail in Texas.

Games on Friday (AM bracket) Start at 10AM sharp!! (ask Pieter Blokker how many times I started games on him before he was even on the court if he was late ;-) ) Please try to be at the courts by 9 at the latest for registration, rules, welcome speech etc..... (afternoon people....wouldn't hurt to be there for that too if possible)
Afternoon bracket will be starting at 3pm. Please get there early so you don't miss you're start.

I was going to post the schedule for the first round, but I don't think I will because I want everyone to be there for the opening rules talk and registration etc....so I'm not going to tell anyone who is up first....just be there in case it's your team. I will not reshuffle starts or delay matches if people are late, unless you have a damn good reason (it should probably invlolve a hospital or something if you want me to actually consider it a valid reason)....not being a dick, we just have a lot of games to get through....

Can't wait to see you all in a couple days!!! 3...2...1.....POLO!!!!

Since I'm playing the afternoon and am perfectly capable of waking up and being at the court on time you can put me down to ref starting first round. I know that can sometimes be a hard thing to co-ordinate in the morning, when all the afternooners havent shown up yet.

Also, ref meeting?! When and where?

Yea, I believe a ref meeting is quite important.

9am Friday morning.

Rules taken from 2011nahbpc.org with important/contentious rules highlighted:

North American Hardcourt Bike Polo Championship Rules (NAH Boards Rules )

1. Teams – Teams will consist of three players. Substitutions will be allowed only in response to player injury or unforeseen absence (cancelled flight, etc.). Proceed as follows:

If the player injury occurs more than two weeks prior to the tournament:
the substituted player must be chosen and declared before the first day of tournament play.
this team is then set for the duration of the tournament.
If the injury occurs during the tournament:
a substitute of equal or lesser skill maybe be chosen to place the injured player. Any member of the opposing team may raise an objection to the substitute chosen if they feel the substitute possesses greater skill than the injured player. This objection must be brought to the attention of the court referee or tournament organizer who will mediate the situation and make a ruling. The ruling is final.
a substitute may be chosen from another competing team. However, if the two teams sharing a teammate meet during the tournament, the substitute will play with their original team.

2. Equipment - All equipment must be inspected and deemed safe before a player is allowed to step on the court. (See General Rules of play, section 5). All equipment must be free of jagged edges and dangerous protrusions. All mechanisms must be adjusted correctly and be in safe working order.

2.1 – Any common type of bike is allowed. (BMX, road, track, mountain). Trikes and recumbents are not allowed.
2.2 – The bike must have at least one handbrake.
2.3 – You may not add anything to the bike to help block shots (e.g., a bar under your BB, netting in the front triangle) with the exception of wheel covers.
2.4 – Handlebars must be capped. Bullhorn handlebars are not allowed.

2.5 – The end of the mallet handle must be capped / plugged.
2.6 – Mallets must not have any sharp, jagged or otherwise dangerous edges or protrusions

2.7 – Helmets are mandatory.

2.8 – Teams are required to wear matching colors.

2.9 – Teams are required to bring at least two different colored jerseys in the event that both teams are wearing a similar color. Team with best record will be required to change. In case of like records, a coin will be tossed.

3. Courts

3.1 – Courts should be no larger than 180′ x 80′ and no smaller than 120′ x 60′

4. Goals

4.1 – All goals will have nets.

4.2 – Goals should be no larger than 200 cm x 95 cm and no smaller than 180cm x 85 cm

4.3 – The goal line will be marked.

General Rules of Play

5 – Registration and Pre-match

5.1 – Each tournament will have a system by which teams will check in and have their equipment inspected (stickers on equipment, wristband from registration, etc.)
5.2 – Teams must be able to show that their equipment has been inspected before participating in any match of the tournament.
5.3 – Failure to have equipment inspected may result in match forfeiture.

6 – Basic match structure

6.1 – The ball will be positioned at center court.

6.2 – Each team will proceed to their side, facing center court with rear wheels touching the back wall.

6.3 – After making sure each team is set, the court referee will shout “3 – 2 – 1 – Go!”
6.4 – At “Go,” each team will “joust” for the ball at center court.
6.5 – After a goal is scored, the referee will stop time.

6.6 – The scoring team will return to their half of the court.
6.7 – The conceding team will return to their half of the court with possession of the ball.
6.8 – The defending team may not attack until the ball or an offensive player has crossed the center line.
6.9 – The referee will resume time as soon as the ball or a member of the offensive team has crossed the center line.

During the elimination rounds where a winner must be determined and the match results in a tie at the end of regulation time, the game will be stopped. The match will enter “sudden death” overtime where the first team to score will be declared the winner. The ball will be reset at center court. Each team will return to their side and the referee will oversee another joust.

7 – Goal scoring and ball movement

7.1 – A goal must originate as a “shot,” defined as striking the ball with the end of the mallet.
7.2 – Wrist shots or scoop shots are not considered a “shot,” therefore will not count as a goal. This technique may be used to pass the ball.

7.3 – A “shuffle,” defined as a ball that is struck with the broad side of the mallet or mallet shaft. Shuffles cannot be used to score a goal.

The shuffle of the ball by the defending team into their own goal will be considered a goal if:

the ball originated as a shot from the mallet of an offensive player or,
if the ball is mishandled in any way by the defending team so as to put the ball in their goal.

The following situations will not be considered an own goal:
If an offensive player shuffles the the ball into the defending player guarding the goal. If the ball enters the goal is this manner, it will not count as an own goal; The defending team will take possession of the ball and play will resume as if a goal has been scored.
A shot from an offensive player that deflects off the broad side their teammate’s mallet will be viewed as a shuffle and will not count as a goal.

7.4 – Ball-joint and side-joint: Not to be confused with a scoop pass, toss or other ball handling. The ball-joint / side-joint is defined as pinning the ball between an open end of the mallet head and the playing surface and then dragging it. Ball-jointing / side-jointing will be allowed ONLY in the player’s defensive zone. Ball jointing / side-jointing in the offensive zone will result in the ball turnover and concession of half-court.
7.5 – If the ball becomes lodged on a player, bicycle or in the spokes of a wheel in such a way that it cannot be played safely, game play will be stopped. The ball will be dislodged and placed on the ground at the point of incident. The player directly involved in the ball being lodged will get possession and play will resume.
7.6 – The ball cannot be played with the feet. Intentionally touching the ball will be counted as a foot-down or “dab” (see below) and that player will be required to tap-out.
7.7 – “Buzzer” shots will only count if the ball crosses the goal line before the sounding of the final bell, buzzer, whistle, etc.
7.8 – If the net is dislodged or moved from it’s proper position and the ball crosses the line of where the net should have been, a goal may be awarded.

8 – Foot-down or “Dab”

8.1 – A foot-down or “dab” is defined as any player placing their foot on any horizontal surface (e.g., ground, mallethead, ball, fallen bike, another player, top of the boards.)
8.2 – When a player “dabs” that player is out of play and may not interfere with the ball or other players until they “tap in” at one of two designated center court points. Interfering with play will result in a penalty.
8.3 – If a “dabbed” player is unable to ride to the tap out spot due to match play, the player must let the play pass. If the dabbed player was acting as goalie, that player must immediately exit the area as soon as possible.

8.4 – If a “dabbed” player stops a shot from going into the net, at the ref’s discretion, it may be ruled a goal. Example: a defending player in front of the net loses their balance and dabs. The defending player remains in front of the net – intentionally or unintentionally – and blocks an incoming shot. If there is no doubt in the referee’s mind that the shot would have resulted in a goal, the referee can declare a goal. If it is also determined that the defending player intentionally blocked the net when out of play they will be awarded a two-minute penalty.
8.5 – The “tap-in” area will be located at both sides of center court.
8.6 – If a player crashes or falls off their bike, play will continue unless a player is injured. At this point the referee will stop the match and attend to the injured player.

General Court Behavior and Physical Contact

Contact between bodies and equipment is permitted, as defined below. However, depending on the severity, any physical, mallet or bike play that is considered by the referee to be excessive, reckless and potentially dangerous to the safety of the players will result in a warning or a penalty. Essentially, the choice to check/pick/mallet-to-mallet is not the issue. It’s how you do it.
9 – Permitted contact and restrictions

9.1 – Body-to-Body contact:

Shoulder-to-shoulder contact and the use of forearms is permitted.
Hooking, holding or otherwise restraining another player by grabbing that player, their clothing or any of their equipment using hands, elbows, feet or mallets is not permitted. Hooking is defined as using a mallet to restrain a bike or player. Holding is grabbing a player, their clothing or their bike with your hand or elbow, a.k.a “chicken winging.”
Pushing with the hands is not permitted.
A “Cheap Shot” defined as excessively pushing or checking someone from behind is not permitted. Physical blows about the neck or head, any punching or kicking will also be penalized.

9.2 – Mallet-to-Mallet contact:

Incidental contact playing the ball is permitted.
Defensively hooking, lifting or holding another player’s mallet is permitted.
“Striking” – hitting another player’s mallet with excessive force – known as “striking” – will result in a warning or a penalty.

9.3 – Bike-to-Bike contact:

Incidental contact is permitted.
Throwing a rear wheel or skidding into another player’s bike is not permitted.
T-boning is not permitted.

9.4 – Mallet-to-body contact is not permitted.
9.5 – Mallet-to-bike contact is not permitted.
9.6 – Body-to-bike contact is not permitted.
9.7 – Checking along the boards:

For boards 4′ or higher – checking is permitted.
For boards 3′ or lower – a play for the ball along short boards that results in a player going over the boards will be heavily scrutinized. If the check is deemed appropriate and the opposing player simply could not maintain their balance, play will continue. If, however, the check against the boards is deemed excessive, reckless or otherwise thought to have little regard for the safety of the opposing player, the referee has the option to issue a warning or a penalty.

9.8 – Goalie contact: A player may use their mallet to hook, shift, move, etc. the mallet of the player in goal in an effort to get them out of position or prevent them from stopping a shot. Body-to-body contact or any incidental bike contact with the goalie is permitted only if the contact is between the player with the ball and the goalie.

9.9 – Clear intent to injure another player or repeated dangerous and reckless behavior after receiving two warnings is not permitted and will be met with a two-minute penalty or ejection
from the match.
9.10 – Throwing of mallets is not allowed at any time, in any situation. Intentionally throwing a mallet will automatically result in at least a 30-second penalty.

9.11 – If a thrown mallet stops a ball from going through the goal the referee may use his discretion to award a goal.

The referee reserves the right to stop the match for any reason. Time-outs will/can be called for the following reasons:

A goal is scored. Time will always be stopped after a goal, but an extended time-out can be called for a mechanical, or water, etc. Each team can call three of these extended time-outs.
The ball goes out of play. The referee will stop time until the ball can be retrieved. The defending team will then get possession of the ball, half-court will be conceded and play will resume.
Mechanical problem. The team with the player having the mechanical problem has the option to call a timeout or “mechanical” only after they take possession of the ball. If the team experiencing a mechanical problem is poised to score when the mechanical arises, they may opt to continue their attempts until such a time as, still in possession of the ball, they may call a mechanical timeout. After fixing the mechanical problem, the ball will be turned over to the other team and play will continue as after a goal has been scored.
Serious injury.

These are the penalties available to the referee. Some infractions have predetermined penalties, such as ball-jointing in the offensive zone (see below). Otherwise, depending on the severity, the referee have the right to use any of these at any time in any order for the infraction in question.

Warnings: For most infractions the referee will issue a verbal warning. A verbal warning may also be followed by being instructed to tap-out. Repeating the same behavior will result in a more severe penalty.

Tap-out: The referee may instruct a player to tap-out at either side of center court. If required, a player must hit the tap-out point with their mallet or they will still be considered “out.” If a player does not physically touch the tap-out with their mallet, they may be asked to tap-out a second time. Tap-outs will always happen without stoppage.

Ball turnover: The penalized team will return to their side. Once the team in possession of the ball crosses half-court, either with a player or the ball, play will resume.

30-second penalty: This penalty will follow verbal warnings or will be used to penalize players for a more serious first-time rule violation. When the referee observes an infraction, they will whistle, stop time and call for the offending player to exit the court. The timekeeper will declare when they can re-enter the game. The resulting game play will be 3 on 2 for a full 30 seconds unless the innocent team scores during the power play. At this time, the penalized player may re-enter the court.

Two minute penalty: This is reserved for striking (see below), excessive force or reckless behavior that draws blood or otherwise results in serious injury or any other dangerous behavior that has been met with two prior warnings. The penalized player will remain off the court for the full two minutes, unless the innocent team scores during the power play. After the innocent team scores during a power play, the penalized player may re-enter the court.

Ejection: This is penalty is reserved for fighting and acutely reckless or willfully dangerous play that either results in or is deemed as having the potential to cause serious physical harm. The penalized player will be removed from the game. The game will continue as 3 on 2 until the end of regulation time.

Delayed penalty call: a delayed penalty can be called. If the innocent team retains possession after the infraction, play with continue until the opposing team gets the ball. At this point, the referee will blow the whistle and stop the match. Each team will return to their side. The ball will be given to the innocent team. If the infraction results in a time-penalty against a player, this player will come off the court at this time. A goal by the innocent team will end the penalty. The penalized player may then return to the court.

Infractions that can result in a warning / tap-out:

foot-down / dab
leaning on goal
Throwing rear wheel or skidding into another player (1st offense)
Striking another player’s mallet (1st offense)
Hooking/holding/grabbing and otherwise restraining another player (1st offense)

Infractions that can result in a 30-second or two-minute penalty:

Hooking or holding (2nd-plus offense)
Cheap shot (1st-plus offense)

Striking (2nd-plus offense)

Mallet throwing
Throwing an opposing player’s mallet
Making body-to-body or incidental bike contact with a goalie without being in possession of the ball

Infractions that will result in a ball turnover:

Tossing the ball out of the court – This is a delay of game penalty. The ball is given to the other team and the match resumes as if a goal had just been scored. A shot or shuffle that deflects off a mallet, wheel, goal post or other surface, the ball will simply be placed on the court at the point of exit and play will resume with no ball turnover.

Ball-jointing / side-jointing in the offensive zone. Scooping the ball, throwing the ball is permitted.
Sweeping wheels with the mallet. If a player sweeps out another player’s front wheel with their mallet causing them to footdown – regardless of intent – a delayed penalty can be assessed.

If the innocent player’s team retains possession of the ball and maintains a clear advantage after their teammate returns, the offending player will simply be required to tap out. Play will continue with no turnover.
If the offending player’s team gets possession after the innocent player’s wheel has been swept, the whistle will be blown and the referee will stop the match. The innocent team will get possession of the ball in their own half. The match resumes as if a goal had just been scored.

For the most part yes, some of those rules are no longer included.

I need a sugar momma so I can work less and play polo more!!

so can you post an accurate rule book?

rule 2.2 the bike must have at least one brake. (not handbrake) not sure why this never gets updated, it's been discussed to death and settled ages ago as far as I'm aware. Basically you must be able to stop your bike (handbrake, fixed gear, etc) I don't care if you stick your mallet into your own front wheel to stop, as long as you have some way to stop. That being said if you are constantly crashing into people you will be penalized under other rules (T-boning etc) starting with a warning, then a time penalties, and possibly ejected from games entirely if you can't control your bike. (never personally seen this be a real issue anywhere though.)

Just wanted to clarify this rule, regarding brakes. This is how it will be enforced. It's not up for discussion at this point. If you don't agree take it to another thread, I'm not interested in debating rules 2 days before the tournament, only in clarifying the rules we already have.

These rules were taken from the NAH website months ago, they were updated months ago over there, after the handbrake thing got clarified: http://www.nahardcourt.com/2011-nah-rules/
