Host club:

St. Louis Bike Polo

Due to space/capacity issues, food budgets, fair access to the one court in the place, etc. We have decided to limit entry to this event to 80 persons, and to charge 20 dollars per. This will include 4 meals, snacks, beer, water, and coffee.

Games all day and night will be played to 10 minutes. We have a scoreboard with a time clock and a buzzer. 4/5ths of these will be straight pick-up. Once an hour, a called game will be had. These will be distributed by lottery. There will be "quiet rooms" where you can roll out a sleeping pad if you want to get some sleep at some point.

A block of 4 tickets, and another of 5, have been reserved for Saturday night's Blues vs Rangers NHL game. These tickets will be 36 dollars each. We will be traveling by city bus, which is 2.25 each way and happens to go door to door from the Skatium to the Scottrade Center.

Update 12/18/09: Registration is now closed. The event is full up. Sold out in 3 days. Crazy.

How we (very loosly) administrate the polo will depend on how many people come. There is only the one rink in the Skatium, and we don't want folk sitting around for hours between games. It'll get worked out.

leon and i have talked extensively about a 24-hour polo tournament, msg us for deets if you are interested. we've always dreamed about having it inside as well. we considered making drug use mandatory, but decided that would be difficult to put on a waiver.

(interestingly, the only waiver i have ever actually signed for polo was used about five seconds later to clean up a beer spill)

I've got a few additional details and answers to your questions.

The legal capacity of the Skatium is 300 persons. I very seriously doubt we will approach that figure. We have a few strategies to make sure everyone can play with everyone else for the whole time which depend on how many people show up. More people = more rigid scheduling to ensure fair access.

We will have use of a PA system for announcements and music. We promise not to abuse it. Bring your ipods, mix tapes, and mix cd's.

We will have use of a scoreboard with a countdown clock.

There are four approximately 8' X 15' rooms with doors where you can roll out your sleeping bags for a while if you want to nap in the dark and relative quiet.

The building allows smoking, but it's our event, so we can ban or limit it to an area.

So far, there are 4 people interested in the hockey game field trip. 8 more, and we all get goodie bags.

We will be feeding and drinking you the whole time. At least a third of all foods will be vegetarian. We can hook up some vegan vittles too.

You haven't missed anything. We've been intentionally vague about the format because it so heavily depends on how many people show up. It was conceived of as 23 hours of pick up. However, if a relatively low number of players come, we will probably run a mini tournament or two just to keep things interesting. If a lot of people show up, we will have to regulate access to the court more to ensure that everyone plays as much as they want to. Time for called games/grudge matches has been built in.

I can attest to the CHI-STL Amtrak. It can be a little long, but its way easier/cheaper than driving in a lot of ways. Plus, everyone can sleep instead of someone having to drive half drunk and on zero sleep the next day.

I really liked Lee from STL idea that he talked about this weekend. It basically entails throwing everyone's mallets into one big pile and then dividing it into teams of three. I like the idea that your team will be completely random. We could even divide the mallets into A, B, and C player piles and then divide them. I figure this is the most fair way to do it because then everyone gets an equal amount of play and no one gets their feelings hurt for not playing enough. Of course we need to leave room for grudge matches as well as Lucky mentioned above. What does everyone think?

Confirmed. This is a polo-party. Time has been set aside for called games/grudge matches if there are specific folks you want to play with/against, but for the most part it's meant to run like the best, longest day of pick-up polo you ever had. Indoors. With booze.

The "Who wants a shot at the current Midwest Champs" dunk tank style grudge matches will be held at 5am, so I stand a chance of beating them.

You can probably get away with baked goods, but we do not have permission to bring in our own booze. The Skatium has a liquor license with the City, which is difficult to obtain and maintain. We have to play by the rules and buy through the venue. We are working like mad on a beer sponsor so it'll hopefully be cheap or free to buy during those hours the venue can serve.

Well, cigarettes are legal and "other things" aren't, so you tell me. The venue allows smoking, we may allow it, may relegate it to one part of the place, or may not allow it at all inside. That vote has not happened yet.

I have heard a couple of stories about people getting away with smoking "other things" in the skatium, but those individuals were probably at a party close to home and not worried about getting 80 of their friends put out on the street at 4 in the morning.

After much consideration, some amount of hand-wringing, and many failed attempts to get a title sponsor to pay the rental fee for 23 hours at the Skatium, StL bike polo has finally arrived at a formula that we think is going to make this event a success. Due to space/capacity issues, food budgets, fair access to the one court in the place, etc. We have decided to limit entry to this event to 80 persons, and to charge 20 dollars per. This will include 4 meals, snacks, beer, water, and coffee.

The show will go more-or-less as follows: All games all day and night will be played to 10 minutes. We have a scoreboard with a time clock and a buzzer. 4/5ths of these will be straight pick-up. Once an hour, a called game will be had. These will be distributed by lottery, which means if you already know who your three are, and which three you want to play, that's are 6 chances for that game to be had sometime during the event.

Weather averages for St Louis for that time of year are a high of 37 and a low of 21, it is usually clear and dry the third weekend of January. I say this for two reasons: 1. To let all the yahoos from south of here who plan on coming know to dress warm, and 2. To say that if you feel that you aren't getting enough polo, our regular Sunday pick up court is 3 miles up the road from the Skatium.

To reserve your spot, please paypal us 20 dollars via Lucky@slathaus.com Careful records will be kept and full refunds will be given to people whose availability changes between now and January 16th. This is the paypal account that I conduct St. Cago Polo Works business through, if that helps anyone get over sending money to a near stranger. Full disclosure of all funds taken in and how they were spent will be available after the event.

A block of 20 tickets have been reserved for Saturday night's Blues vs Rangers NHL game. These tickets will be 39 dollars each. We will be traveling by city bus, which is 2.25 each way and happens to go door to door from the Skatium to the Scottrade Center. If you are interested in attending the hockey game, make a note of it in your reservation and, if you are able, send that 39 dollar ticket price at the same time.

I'll do my damndest to keep the tallies updated on the Tournament thread, so you can all feel that deadline and make your travel plans.

2 good points have been brought up:

1. Not everyone has a paypal account. If this is you, contact me through my profile and swear up and down that you plan to attend this event. We will hold a place for you, but if you don't come, we're gonna put your name on a South City Hoosier to play in your stead, and you may get a bad rep as a player.

2. There is some housing available for those whose travel schedule has them coming in Friday and/or not leaving til Monday. Again, contact me through my profile and we'll get you some place to crash.

A not so good point that was raised: Play for 10 minutes. If it's all the polo I get possibly for an hour, I'd rather play ten minutes and loose 2-23 than walk off the court 0-5 in two and a half minutes.

Vegan/vegetarian food has always been a part of the plan.

As the "fourtunate 80" have all registered through paypal, I have a lot of first and last names, not cities of origin or .ca screen names. I hesitate to repost all that personal info. Maybe something can be worked out if/when the final spots are filled.

Right now it's folk from all over Florida, Lexington, Cincinnati, Columbia, Kansas City, St Louis, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, Colorado Springs, Austin, Philly, Baltimore, Charleston, Savannah, and Bloomington.
