oh, GEORGIA, how disappointing. i actually thought this might be the grecian capitol, and got all excited because i figure that place is probably still smouldering... or maybe even on fire still?

bummer. i would have been into that. but this devil's not going down to georgia, i'll tell you that for free. fuckin' rednecks.

Wow, you reinforced two stereotypes there, Adam. Southerners are all hicks and New Yorkers are all ass holes.

it's always nice to be able to live up to expectations.

The stereotype is probably fat, distrustful, gun-toting hicks.

In St Louis, urban hicks are referred to as "Hoosiers". It's a very insulting term here, more so than just "Redneck" or "Hick". Apparently, back when the city was a union-controlled industrial paradise, scab laborers came from Indiana during strikes. There's still enough bad feeling about that to use "Hoosier" as a derogatory term.

Anyway, Athens, GA is a neat, little burgh. If I were within a few hours drive, I'd go to this. Sounds like a solid weekend.

it's going to be fun and with the students back in session, there will be lots of fun on bikes and 30,000 inebriated college students.

anyway, our (my) goal is to get as many cities in georgia to repesent. i have a handful of cities that have committed and really want to work a cohesive georgia network. florida seems to have done a really good job -- i went down to their all florida match in orlando and it looked like all the major cities had at least one team in attendance.

what kinda court are the games going to be on? photos? thinking bout coming up. maybe just for sunday though.

as of today, we're changing up the schedule slightly. we were trying to run the polo match and log pull concurrently, but logistics dictate that we'll be doing the polo starting sunday around 11am and then the log pull/awards ceremony & terrapin keg at the hub bicycles immediately afterwards.

we'll be doing the bike polo tourney in a parking lot at a local park. the bottom lot is long enough to afford 2 matches about the same size as the two tennis courts used in the all florida match. it's nowhere as smooth as roller hockey rinks/tennis courts, but it's flat (almost impossible to find in athens) and a million time smoother than what we play on for our pick up games. i'm probably just going to close the ends of each court with metal french barricades & snow fence.

the backup is a basketball court. it's nice, but there are alot of issues that keep me from wanting to use it.

oh, and that park doesn't smell like chickens being..processed.

So our event happened.

These are some facts coming from our weekend:
* 128 total starts for the weekend (146 if you include the qualifiers)
* Beers Consumed: Equivalent to 3.5 kegs
* Furthest Competitor: Cork, Ireland
* Furthest Competitor from USA: Mississippi
* Number of Ph.D's (or candidates) competing in weekends events: 10
* Number of Pro cyclists competing in weekends events: 2
* Fastest avg speed for 1 lap of the Athens Twilight Course on Computrainer: 31.2mph (~1200 watts max)
* Total # of teams at Polo: 11

UGA-1 (university of georgia) vs MoA-1 (athens city team) had the most physical of all the games in the semi's with UGA-1 winning 5-4. The winning shot was done with a bare pole after the head of the mallet was ripped off the shaft a few seconds earlier. UGA-1 went on to win the tournament.

Our friend who resides in Ireland used his bike friday as his primary bike for most of the events. 20" wheels with a fixed setup. i think he said it was equivalent to around 75 gear inches. I told him he needs to make a coupled polo mallet to stick into his suicase...

oh man, i completely forgot:

one of the "bonus" options for our messenger race, Loose Nuts Cross-Cat, was to get a NJS tattoo. One of the girls did it.

see yall in pensacola.

With some of the people testing positive in the tour de france i wouldn't be surprised if some of these people were taking steroids to win their races as well
