Bike Polo Paris November 2008 tournament

BIKEPOLOPARIS-NOV2008-72dpi.jpg
Saturday, November 1, 2008
Host club:
Paris

Since we only have one day, the tourney will be 16 teams, double elimination style. Basically, each team is allowed to lose once. Lose twice and you're out. There's a winners' bracket for teams that have never lost and a losers' bracket for teams that have lost once, and the winner of the winners' bracket ends up playing against the winner of the losers' bracket.
It's somewhat confusing format the first time around, so read about it on wikipedia beforehand if you want, and look at the fancy pictures.
More updates soon about rules, friday and saturday evening plans, and the backup plan for polo in case it rains, cause the Palais de Tokyo court is useless in the rain.

Location

Palais de Tokyo
13 ave du Président Wilson
Paris, J75 75008

Don't know which teams you're counting already, so I'll say: it could be 5.

I need to know what day exactly. May not be able to get off from work at such a short notice...

Mike,
London, UK.

I was told November 1st, I really hope this is the case, as we're travelling on Fri 31st, arriving early evening, and coming back November 2nd at 2pm.

i think Nov 1st, ya. but get here on friday oct 31st.

sounds good kev, we arrive about 1700 on friday, and leave 1400 sunday, so we're there all day saturday for a full day of polo! can't wait!

Let's hope, it wont rain !
You'll see, the spot is awsome.

hold off on buying your ticket for the moment, i just talked to marc and he said maybe the tournament will take place Sunday. but i'm hoping Saturday.

we have already bought tickets... so, ideally it can be on Saturday. Please Marc!

ok saturday it is.

dont know how else to put that... fucking awesome!

Ray

wicked, thanks Kev. I just looked into eurostar, and because we bought the cheapest tickets, don't think they can be transferred.

Fucking awesome.

is this for definite?

Am about to buy some tickets, so need to know for sure

dt, i'd wait for confirmation from Kev/Marc...

do it.

great thanks, see you there

Two european polo tourneys for this little NYC girl? C'est bon! How did I get so lucky? I'll have to somehow get to Milan the next morning, but count me in. Oh, and I need a team...

See y'all in Zurich and Paris. Can't wait.

you couldn't do the weekend before?

Hmmmm there is another Tournament in Berlin on November 1st. And it's indoor. Hell, too many tournaments.

Looking forward to playing in Paris.

Just bought a ticket for Ben Hunter to Play in this tournament. I'm going to try to make it if my ticket can be changed. Who from london can get me a bike?

jonny

btw, ben and i received a sponsorship from redbull to pay for the flights. They seem pretty open to giving up more money for polo events. Pretty awesome,

Are Redbull involved in the Paris tourney? I approached redbull Uk about Zurich and they wouldn't because theyre not involved directly. Sucks.

(This is supposed to be a reply to Jonny's post...)

Mike,
London, UK.

Consider a bike sorted. Send me some dimensions you like and I'll try to match as much as possible.

(to Jonny as well)

Mike,
London, UK.

Why don't you bring your bike? It's free on 90% of airlines?
And if you need a bike I'd ask peeps in Paris not London... as this is happening in France!

wait, you mean you might not be able to come?

ok well my flights booked and i got off work.

Thanks for the heads up you bastards! Just booked my flight to go spend el dia de los muertos in D.F. but if I'd been told ahead I'd have totally come over for the weeek end. *fuming*

we just started talking about it yesterday. but doug can still come if he wants. hell lets all go to paris

two thirds of BAD polo are coming, we are negotiating our third member. Can't wait. Any advice on a nice hostel?

cecily and jonny are coming via Italy with some convoluted travel plans and thus probably can't bring bikes. ben is coming direct and is bringing a bike. anyone got extra? preferably freewheels! 49-52cm for cecily, 52-54cm for jonny.

Hook me up with a ticket, and I'll be there.

you should cal the red bull corporate offices. I blind called them and three hours later i had a ticket.

????????

email me the number...please??

i am pretty much the most psyched i've been in a long time. a tourney in zurich with strom, adam and zach, a tourney in paris with kev, jonny, and ben (and mark???). italy in between.

a bike would be rad, but at this point, i'll play on a velib just to play. can't wait to see you all.

Okay, here is the deal, i talked to the red bull office and they are going to have some poeple in philly who are willing to sponsor bike polo tickets to paris, you need to meet them at this address and this time

Monday October 20th

freak

hey kev,
what are the (approximate) dimensions on the palais de tokyo court (both with and without a wet end)? i'm bummed i didn't get to play there.
red bull will only fly me there if the court meets their standards.

for some reason i cant tell how serious jonny is being here,i want to believe hes not fucking around.

no dice nyc...MKE!

Red Bull IS flying the Philly team there. Now there will be two (2) "top teams" in PARIS!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'm in paris, ready to hit it for some pre tourney play tomorrow,

thats awsome, make them fly you air france, first class its so much better than virgin.

I pretty much just do what they tell me.

This is for folks from London and Karlsruhe coming next week...

A kid called Barthes will be running the brackets and scheduling, bring him a beer or something.

This team wins a tournament on the old continent. The Europeans are good, damn good and it was fun as hell to play with them. Especially the peanut gallery of brits. More details soon.

one of many highlights of the day... i was suggesting to jonny that he shoot a bit less and instead dribble in and score. his response:

"but i want to be like alexis"

More photos by Arnaud, my brother in-law.

and we'll post more photos soonish i hope.

madbikepolo (kev, ben and his brother) lost their first game horribly (5-2) and that was a shock, but they managed to climb their way out. so the pressure was on for them, but it was hard fought. the worlds wherever they are, if its attended by a strong european contingent could surprise us all. in 2010 the field will be equal on both sides of the pond. but no doug im sure youll never loose, as long as you retire soon enough.

Nice job fellas. Congratulations.

was a great tournament, so much fun!
just one word: nice!

great respect for madbikepolo!

thanks marc for everything! perfect!

bikepolo karlsruhe!

i'd love to see some scores and the final standings, as well as your impressions of european play ben, johnny, and kev. how did philly do? how are the feelings for teams coming to philadelphia for the worlds?

damn mark, everybody thought you were actually going there . . . you're good at this interwebs shit

(i swear i replied to piet)

i hear they hosting the worlds in either basil or london. i cant wait to make it. the europeans are great, and shoot rockets. dribble well and defend well. give them a few months to get plays built and we wouldnt have won. if you want to see them play come to the NYC tourney in madson, they seem eager come.

big thanks to everyone for organizing and generally being such stand-up hosts. i'll come back to paris for polo anytime. i put up a few more pictures and some video you might not want to miss. http://www.flickr.com/photos/cecilyupton/sets/72157608586527396/.

Great day I must say, and congrats to MAD Bike Polo - they clearly deserved to win. I only wish all our outdoors tourneys weren't happening in torrential rain (BFF london, BFF paris), and our indoor ones (BFF Zurich) weren't taking place on bright and sunny days!

thanks everyone for a really great day, loved every moment (despite the weather). Well done MAD polo, clearly the best team of the day (gutted i didn't get a chance to play you). Us euro's are gonna have to step it up a notch.

Good job boys. From the previous brouhaha on this website i half expected to hear reports of Ben being drawn and quartered at mid-court for all the offensive shit he's talked electronically.

3...2...1...GO!
Mallets Of Mayhem

thanks for the congrats, i think my oyster shucking skills won them over, all in all i didnt create too much of a rukas, at least no more than the english or the germans did, i really want some of them to make it here. the team we beat for fist was really fun to play against, not to mention we had a great game agaisnt the fancy french fingers or (Ph,Ph,Ph), but it ended in them yelling at me for playing with them too rough, wich i may have but it didnt seem that way to me. so alexsis, would you tell robbie that grace really wants to see him again. ok bye for now
