3rd weekend in February averages

for Ottawa: high teens f, 10mph winds from the WSW

for Pensacola: high 60's f with cool breezes from the North

I can't imagine why you'd be so excited to travel then.

Chicago Bike Polo 2003-2008

Retired.

count east van in, it's going to be part of the winter training program.

East Van better make it down here. Seattle, too. This Saturday, I am playing in my first Florida mini-polo tournament in Orlando. It's nothing like the Pacific Northwest here, but it will make a perfect addition to any winter training program.

Austin, TX? polo!???

after the "back to school shuffle"? I heard about this, I wish I could go! all my friends back home are putting it together. Let us know how it goes!

Also, down for the trip back down to FL if any Chicago dudes are going. I've only gotten to play with ryan from P-cola, and that was only in some shitty parking lot behind the stardust.

Polo at the "Back to School Shuffle" was baller. Tampa, Orlando and Sarasota represented for a total of three teams competing for the Central Florida Polo Title. It was really fun and possibly the first time that different Florida cities got together to play polo. Gonna have to put together a Florida-wide Polo Tournament soon.

its not the first time im perty sure that jax and tally have played and a couple players from orlando played in our little tournament we had at the beach during our crazy eights alleycat weekend. but for sure the most florida teams against each other so far! wish we had made it.

we are working with tallahasse (seeing as they started playing like 3 or 4 years ago) to host the Florida Bike Polo Championships in November (and change the cities every year to who ever is not hosting the SouthEastSidePolo and maybe even make it a BI Yearly event.

glad to have ya as part of florida bike polo! hope to play against you soon. we are dying over here for soem out of town competition!

Portland would love to go whos going from sea town skip the bull shit rain in the nw florida

change in dates yall. would have been great to have it during Mardi Gras but there would be no place to stay sadly. those hotels fill up and thats the start of tourist season. so the week before will just have to do.

hope valentines day doesnt spoil anyone's travel plans...

Expect some calgary guys to come down to, maybe even a couple girls too, good way to get out of the cold weather and snow

I'm determined to make this happen(ing), despite having complicated logistics to manage
Can a brother catch a ride down from someone passing through DC?
Following the event I'm looking for a ride to Orlando on the 15th (Any-you Orlando cats coming out to the panhandle for this?).

there will be kids from orlando and the area here im sure you could catch a ride back with somehow. those kids roll deep so you might have to strap yourself to the back or something. and im sure youll be ableto findsomeone to come down with if the busses dont happen?

who's ready? tons of new info on the first post about hotles and beach homes!

we'll sort this out in the next couple weeks. but there will be a MKE contingent there

no dice nyc...MKE!

The new post box does not exist in this thread for me either (kev).

Anyway...If I was going to come down for just the weekend, could I throw someone some loot for sleeping at one of these places, or perhaps crash at someones house for the weekend? I won't be coming the whole week if I end up coming.

yes there will be accomodations for those just coming in for the weekend.

the hotel rooms and beach houses are rentable just for the weekend too. so gather up the folks.

athens, ga plans to attend. one of our girls is actually headed down there next week & wants to scout if you have time to show her around..?

we can provide numbers in january, what's the cost/rent schedule for a hotel or beach house..?

yeah, so i can't read. ugh.

we play on mondays and wednesdays. and we could show her around. i lived in athens before moving here. broke my femur gettin hit by a car on my way to ole tightpockets on the corner of pope & meigs.

email us pensacolaalley@hotmail.com

oh wow. that sucks. about an year or so ago, some kid got run/got really screwed up around that same spot.

anyway, i'm sure that we have some mutual friends that live/lived in athens. as for me, i work for the athens twilight and have been for several years.

i'll get amy to contact you.

thanks!

wait i think i may be confused....is the tourney on the valentines day weekend or the weekend before? and it's in pensacola not tampa?

no dice nyc...MKE!

tampa did not have the resources to pull it together right now so we are taking over the SESPI and its the 14th and 15th in Pensacola after a week long of activites and hanging on the beach with tons of time for pick up games and mini tournaments and stupidity.

this is our awesome main court for the week..

there will also be one or two courts made on tennis courts right next door to this court! those courts will be completely surrounded with plywood boards.

please ask more questions if they are out there. and let us know your coming so we can reserve hotelrooms/beach houses!

Is there anyway we can go to this tourney without having to pay for a room?

Yes. Staying on the Beach is not necessary for the tourney or side events just figured would be easier to access to the beach and passing out.

Can we just sleep on the beach?

Sleep on the beach? Of course you can. Although there is no access to potable water, unless you sleep out at Ft. Pickens (which is free camping until the road is rebuilt...technically). Last year I did this and probably will again this year. Ft. Pickens is a 7mi. sandy walk/ride out from the gate which is 5mi. ride out from the beach polo court. The camp site has potable water and fire pits. And it's Florida, so you won't free your ass off if you sleep outdoors. But if you need 'modern comforts" afforded by being at house, than Ft. Pickens is not for you.

So If you want to pay nothing for lodging, either contact one of us in the area who has space to put you and your crew up(sorry my house is full and I'm about 15mi. from the main beach), bring some camping supplies and camp out at Ft. pickens 8mi. from the main beach, or just camp on the beach (no fires...technically)
http://www.nps.gov/guis/planyourvisit/campground-openings-in-florida-and...

^They say 10$. But the only people who ever camp @ Ft. Pickens are pretty dedicated people who make the 7mi. hike w/o a vehicle, so the rangers don't really enforce the fee. I guess the fee is just a nice gesture. The island is wide open and there are never crowds out @ Ft. Pickens.

i'm probably coming to this. i'll be coming in from colorado, though, not nyc. is anyone from nyc going down? also, i'd be down for pitching in for a house. sounds great...thanks for the awesome organization.

i ben hunter will be coming to this tourny. i will be bring three children, a woman and my bike shit. i will be able to generate a team as well from madison, perhaps some mke kids as well. i havnt talked to anyone her, but i think i am going to take the oportunity to play polo and vacation with my family for the week. i wont be doing any stupid races or other organized events though. also what size beach house would be apropriate for me? is there just a two bedroom one if more madison kids come then i would share with them. oh and what can i do with the family while i am there, none of that disney bullshit i hope

ok this is just a expression of intent, and nothing is set is stone.

cupcake you want to share a place?

yeah. i'd be into that. i'm quitting my job though, so i'm going to be low on the cash money. that said, i'd gladly fork it over to hang out with silas. if we could get some more mad/mke kids in on it, we'd probably get a better deal. what's lief doing? birdie? your brother? kremin? max + jill? get those crazy kids down there. i've never been to florida.

lief is down , i think. jonny not so much, something about being to busy hating to get down

i would suggest 1001 ariola (this is half a block from the courts)its a 3 bedroom/2bath and sleeps 9. 3 Bedrooms, Sleeps 9, 2 Baths, 1 Queen Bed, 4 Twin Beds, 1 Queen (Sleeper)...$1,150.00/week $195/day (w/out taxes and fees)

all the work you've done to break down prices and put out whats available makes me want to go even more! I'll know by the end of this week, we'll hopefully have a pretty large group coming from up here

thats what i like to hear! i know amanda is looking forward to having seattle be in florida! let me know how manyish and what peoples spendings are like and we will work out a place! how long do yall plan on staying?

hopefully fly in thursday and leave monday. also hopefully 2-3 teams. still working out a budget, altho you've made it pretty easy. well hopefully be able to cram everyone into 1 beach house a block from the courts and just play for 4 days straight

representin sea town. i'll b bringing the northwest one-polo-love religion down south. can't wait to share the luv. great winter training.

anyone from nyc have any plans yet?

someone from the scorchers ( http://scorchers.tk/ ) new haven just wrote about a group of them coming down. maybe yall can car/van/bus pool!

Get your reservations in!

Paradise INN

tell them your with the bicycle group!

You can put down reservations and if you cant come cancel them with no charge as long as you cancel it 3 days before your reservation! So let them know your coming!! Mardi Gras is the weekend after and people start coming in early so Reserve some Rooms for you and your friends!!!

Beach Homes are also available thru Paradise Beach Homes http://www.paradisebeachhomes.com

these are the best rooms for the cheapest rates on the BEACH!!!

there are only 5 "3 queen size rooms" that can fit easily 6 and definitely 8-10 and would make it only like 10 dollars or less a night for everyone. and you can do the same with the 2 queen bed rooms which there are more of. get 6 people in those and it will be about 10 bucks a night per person! or have the romance of a 1 king size or 1 queen size bed rooms!

CASH PRIZES FOR THE TOP 3 furthest traveled teams!
and more ways to win cash too!

We're reserving one of the 12 person houses in the next couple of days.

you still got room in there? how much per person? my girlfriend and i will be riding in to pensacola round wednesday or thursday at the latest.

MKE!

140x65

We may have room. I should know for sure by this Wednesday. We're reserving Friday and Saturday night. Of course there will be floor space too. I'm bringing a sleeping pad in case we have more than there are beds.

how's the room situation looking and if you have anything still available how much is it those two nights?

MKE!

140x65

I sent you a message through the contact form. Maybe it didn't go through.

Anyhow, I'm still uncertain about the total number staying at the house. We have 10 confirmed and a couple unknown. I can't promise a bed, but I'm willing to give mine up and sleep on a pad if we have too many. It was $610 total after fees. Each person is paying $50 for the weekend (Friday afternoon - Sunday morning). If we have more than 12, we'll reimburse everyone the difference. You're still welcome to stay. Let me know if you're staying for sure. It's likely you and your girl will get a room with a queen.

i may or may not be in town, somebody in my girlriends family is getting married that weekend, but it is in ocala, so i doubt i could make the swing. i would be a lot more interested had you guys made an attempt to house people rather than give the website of the hotel that is sponsoring the event. it is going to be expensive enough for me to fly to the goddamn wedding, let alone find out how the hell to travel 200 miles once in florida.

The main reason we are not pushing for us to house people is that the courts are 11 miles away from where most of us live some people even farther. And its not like there is good public transit. So staying on the beach where sadly none of us live would be the best bet for comfort for the week/end of rolling out of bed and onto the courts. Plus the Paradise INN/Beach Homes is a sponsor and we encourage people to help the people that are helping us so we can make this a better event for years to come!

I understand your concern and im sure no one will go unhoused unless they are camping or something.

There will be people coming from that part of florida you might be able to catch a ride with but im not sure the availability of being back for a wedding on the weekend. but please come enjoy some polo!

Did you read the thread, Joe? They did offer. They also explained why it would be easier/more fun to stay on the beach with all your polo friends than 11 miles away in town.

milwaukee cyles is now a sponsor! along with BLAQ, vaya bags, Transient bags co.,Cognition, R.E. Load, spokepunchers, 66 fixed (st pete), burro bags and our three local shops Bikes Plus, Truly Spoken, Cycle Sports. more sponsors in the works!

just got done with my meeting with the Island Authority and more.

- helmets will be mandatory while playing. (we will have some extras laying around, mostly hockey style, but dont count on us!)

also rear breakers/fixed are encouraged to have light color rear tires! plastic pedals will help out also! not mandatory but helpful in the long run always.

flying into Pensacola is usually a good idea but sometimes like when i just check boston to new orleans instead its about 80 bucks cheaper but 6hrs in a car (3 each way) but there might be room in a vehicle with the new orleans kids. page Will on that.

but yes PNS is the code! let me know if you need any other help figuring things out. sometimes Airtran has some good deals on their website that wont be on any search site. We obviously can pick you up from the Pensacola Airport! We can try to hook some housing up before the weekend starts and all of us will mostly be staying on the beach also but we all live in town.

So what is the pot for furthest traveled?

EVBP
Northern Standard

well all depends on sponsors and how much we have to end up spending but im assuming at my estimates 100 bucks or could be a lot more for furthest and well do second and third at smaller increments.

and so there could be a decent amount for 1st 2nd and 3rd besides the prizes and probably some DFL prizes!

We're in 910 Largo. Still not too sure about when we're all arriving, who's driving, etc. I imagine some people will be leaving later in the evening Friday. We've got the place from Friday afternoon 'til around 1pm Sunday.

i almost forgot i need a team! just won the NYC in Madison tourney undefeated who needs a third? Brian do you have a team?

140x65

would love to have you as a ringer but gots to stay loyal to pensacola this time around. sure well get some pick up games in together! seems like there might be some solos from seattle lookin for teammates also possibly. since they are saying there will be like 4 or 5 from seattle.

pick wisely young kremin!

play with boston.(gus and I)

Kremin, I dont know if Robbie is coming. If he doesnt we should play together

so, i talked to pcola sauls (ryan) about this but just to let y'all know, i talked to paradise beach homes. they're giving 15-20% off most houses that week/weekend from their online prices.

athens (GA) and ft lauderdale are going in on a house about a mile east of the polo courts. it's not as close as the ones that ryan put up, but it's very affordable. it's one of the two on entrada 2 facing the sound and we like the fact that there is a kitchen so that some of our people can play house mom and cook. the other house looks like it's still available and it sleeps 12.

if anyone needs a place, i think all our beds are taken, but we should have floor space. drop me a line.

I can barely contain my excitement!!!!
See ya'll in P'cola.

Important Inquiry...

Two of us from Boston are looking to fly down for the weekend tournament. We think shipping our bikes down before we arrive and shipping them out before we leave will be the easiest way to do it.

1. To what address can we ship two bikes to?
2. Is there a UPS store or a post office in Pensacola that we could hit up before we head back to the airport on our way out?

Have you had experience in the last 3 months? It may be possible to get a bike checked for pretty cheap (and was probably relatively easy a couple years ago), but NWA looks to have a pretty solid $100 fee each way for oversize/bike stuff as of now. Also mah company gets nice discounted UPS rates... I just don't have the balls to take my bike to the airport and hustle ticketing agents.

Aren't those sleepless nights before a tournament you organized great? You try to work out everything you want to say and do, then a mess of people arrive and have whatever kind of time they want to anyway. 97% of polo players want to have a good, sportsman-like, fun time, so it usually works itself out.

For people talking about shipping bikes down:

Amtrack is $70/bike/way, but if you put all of your bikes in one box and tell them that it is one bike, it is only one charge. I don't know if Pensacola has Amtrack though... it is definitely cheaper than sending two bikes in separate boxes on a plane.

slapdick bike polo - washington dc

slapdick bike polo - washington dc

sadly the amtrak dont roll thru pensacola anymore since katrina. they stoped the new orleans to jax sunset route.

but does this mean that ryan will show up to a florida tournament after trying to get us up there so much?

About 10 of us from Columbus are coming down for the weekend. Can't wait!

holy shit thats awesome. how many teams will be with that? and when do yall think you will be rolling in!?

Columbus is driving down Thursday evening and should arrive pretty early on Friday. I think we'll have 2 teams for the tournament. The others may join a pick up game, but probably won't compete.

We're definitely bringing 3 teams, maybe 4. Anyone keeping count? How many do you expect to register?

right now its about 20-25 teams with not having official numbers from tally, orlando, tampa, sarasota, jax. right now as a low estimate im just putting 1 team from those places which each could have a couple more coming. im assuming upwards to 30-35 teams will be here.

OK everyone pay attention. This is your one and only chance. Apparently no one else in Richmond has the financial capabilities (ballin') or is able to take off a week from work. I have Saturday February 7 - Sunday February 15th off from work and no way to get to Florida.

Any of you coming down interstate 95 will pass through Richmond. I challenge all of you to battle each other to decide who is to pick me up. There will be a separate battle to decide who will let me stay with them for the week.

Those of you I have stayed with before can testify I am a cordial and respectful house guest. I will do my best to ruin your good times in any parlor games by winning and talking shit before, during and after your imminent defeat. I will do my dishes. I am quiet and responsible but still capable of party rage. I will carry you home from said party on my back or build a sand castle around you to protect you from vagrants.

So what you gain from giving me a ride and a place to sleep:

A) I don't drink. I have a license. I can drive from Richmond while you guys party.
B) I can throw in on gas. Thus making the ride down a little cheaper.
C) I can throw in on accommodations.
D) I like playing polo and taking long walks on the beach.

Who picks me up doesn't really matter to me. Who I stay with might be decided on how much it will cost. So don't fret if you miss me on the road because I might be sleeping next to you.

Bids for my attention and presence can be made to skandlous@gmail.com
Don't miss out on this opportunity.

Don't bring cake to a donut fight.

So you'll be coming for the week will any richmond just be coming for the tournament on the weekend??

As it stands right now the majority of Richmond is coming down Thursday.
I am the only one staying all week long.

I believe it's 5 people on Thursday. So 2 teams total from Richmond for the tournament.

Also, just made a gyroscopic camera stabilizer of sorts... that uses bike wheels!

Impossible to hold damned tiny camera still while trying to shoot footage on the court riding on a set of truly un-true wheels. Not sure if it'll actually work out, or if it'll make it past airport security.

that's rad gus. well done. only i wonder how tired your arm might get... maybe consider a monopod on the other side of the axle, so you can put it down now and then?

As much as I appreciate your dedication to using bike parts for everything, that's going to become very unweildy for filming pretty quick. There are (you probably know already) lots of DIY steadycam plans on-line. They weigh less and take up less room around your body and the 6 people on the court than a spinning bicycle wheel.

the courts had to be scrambled last minute cause of change in plans but it was spring break so everyone had a good time with it! next years courts will be better and hopefully smoother!

Fuck ya! This was a rad/gongshow tournament. I know we didn't win it but i'm going to blow our own horn here for a minute. We climbed out of the losers bracket (Fuck you Kremin and company) with a take no prisoners, forecheck hard and shoot the lights out attitude and blasted through some real tough teams to get to the final with our backs to the wall. We were spent, coach was out of gas and starting to sober up and alexis and i couldn't hold off Seattle any longer and our demise was unveiled.
It was a rough and skilled game. There were some hard checks/crashes. Tempers were short. Some people thought a fight was going to break out. Instead a pause in the game to hug each other surmounted *ugh*. I had no part of that, that's what happens when the games OVER. It must be a west coast thing cuz a similar thing happened with Pieter at NSPI08. Anyway it was a classic polo final. Congrats Leon, Amanda and Seebass.

Fuckin' gay rights boys, coming out of months of no polo and having a run like that...I'll take it.

athens made it back. well, eventually.

we threw dr jones into the early caravan as his ankle was the size of a grapefruit from being pummeled by MoM/Seattle/etc. thanks, ryan, for pitting them against the top-3 teams during the round robins :P the remaining 1/3 stayed around and got in a few final games on the hockey rink. there's nothing quite like playing polo on a beach, eh?

the 2nd group eased back to athens, taking a nice break in Montgomery, AL and that's where this weekend's adventure turned into an EPIC adventure. the glorious Loose Nuts van suffered a heart attack after dinner. chris took out the difibulator and recessutated the beautiful blue beast. some wrenching and hammering was enough to get her up and running.

she worked great for about another hour before showing signs of larger issues looming. limping into auburn, she wheezed out her final few gasps of life before suffering multiple major organ failure.

chris used his shaman bike mechanic skills with mallard & jake taking out the requisite duct tape, hammers and various other persuasive means we use in georgia to get a vehicle going again. but, i guess bikes are a bit easier to coerce than cars and the beautiful blue beast was announced dead at 2am central time.

auburn is around 180 miles away from athens. we considered our options, at one point mallard said he did a 250 mile ride in 18 hours and that this was 70 miles less. uhm....

we ended getting two cars from atlanta (driving a few exits out of atlanta before realizing we were on 75 and not 85), transferring everything into the cars and driving back to athens (also missing the exit onto 138/athens from 20 thanks to me even though i've done this section of roadway a million times).

finally, 15 hours later, actually 18 hours if you include the 1.5hr round trip to return one of the 2 vehicles, the crew made it back to athens.

anyway, it was great to meet everyone. india actually made money this weekend(!??!?!?!) by winning the goldsprints and us paying her portion of the room in return for cooking for us.

it is impressive to see how many folks wore helmets during this tournament.

they were "mandatory" from the saftey officer on the island. but no one really complained which is a step in the right direction. no one really wore them in pick up though besides the smart ones.

helmets mandatory? covered.

Most fun I've ever had in a tournament. Can't even express how cool it was to be there, next year will be infuckingcredible once all the technical details of hosting a tournament are taken care of like having a PROPER COURT. I just woke up from our trip home and I'm still in a bit of a daze but I wanted to thank everyone for one of the most beautiful bike polo weekends I've been to. Next year I will be there for the whole week. Spring Brake Polo here Seattle comes again and again. Thanks to Ryan for all the fun and hard work. Thanks to AB and Joe for the driving. Thanks to OOTA we seem to be rolling stronger and stronger every time. I just want to let it be known that not only did Seattle take the tournament but I am the official bike fight champ of RVA bike polo.

Oh yeah also thanks everyone to quote Ryan for putting up with our "West Coast hippie Shit"

Leon
Seattle Bike Polo

Your West Coast hippie shit is why I never bike fought/CLOBBERED you.... I dont beat up people of the Earth. Next time I wont leave it up to Nick and Ben.
GO GREEN. BIKE FIGHT!

Thanks again to PCOLA for havin all of us out... it was a blast.
BOOM!

SQUAD UP!

OK Since I was one of four people who spent the whole week in Pensacola I feel like it may be up to me to clarify / start any rumors and or describe in great detail what may or may not have occurred in the past 10 days.

First I would like to thank Ryan. He did all he organizing by himself. Things weren't always the smoothest but damn if it was his fault. Kudos to you Ryan for all your efforts and for maintaining good spirits when hings didn't quite work out. Thanks for putting us up in your house for the beginning of the week and cooking meals for us. Thank you Rusty also. I hope we didn't put you out too much.

Ottawa showed up at my house in Richmond, Va. at about 4:45am on Sunday morning. Much later than we had planned. They had run into trouble at the border thanks to Navid's heritage. They also flatted in Buffalo and then got lost trying to get out. Needless to say they were in no mood for typical RVA antics and I drove us out without question.

To you Canadia, I thank Brian and Navid. I love you both like older brothers. This trip was all made possible by you accepting my plea for a ride. You can say what you want about me taking the brunt of driving duties but in my mind it as all worth it because you came to get me in the first place. We spent a lot of time together this past week, smoked each others' cigarettes, stole everyone's lighters, promptly lost them all, made lots of promises and came up with some amazing ideas. If either of you ever need anything don't hesitate to ask. You know I'll make it happen.

To Alexis, I almost wish we weren't so much like brothers cuz it wouldn't suck as much to split up at tourney's end. Then again our reunions wouldn't be as epic either. Congrats to you for scoring on and off the court. Come to RVA whenever you want. I'll be on your team whenever you want. etc etc you know all his mess already. Sorry I destroyed you at goldsprints.

Tuesday I think it was we drove to New Orleans to pick up Kremin and Jenna. Yeah. We did the road trip within a road trip. It was very surreal. 3 hours there while everyone proceeded to get smashed. We have no idea how to get where we're going. Somehow Navid and Ryan are on directions coordination again (the same two that got us lost coming into Pensacola). For some reason we have to get on a ferry to cross the Mississippi which was an awesome segue. We all get pissed off cuz we're starving and here we are on a fucking boat and not eating all for Kremin. He meets us just barely in time for departure from the west side of the Miss. and we head to the French Quarter for dinner and drinks. Brian proceeded to pass out several times along the way (see any number of reference photos). Swaffling becomes the word of the week.

Boston showed up in the form of Javier and Gus on Wednesday. I picked them up at the airport with Ryan. We ran a bunch of errands and returned home. You two have improved your games so much. I was stoked to have you around. If memory serves me right Wednesday night we went out to a bar that didn't look at all like a bar from the outside but was the seediest dive shithole I have ever seen on the inside. I'll be damned if OOTA didn't run everyone out an shut the place down on our own. Everyone got trashed again. We owned the pool tables, shuffle board thingie and juke box. Brian made a deal with a local lass to exchange face drawings using a marker. He made a heart and a lightning bolt on each of her cheeks. She pretty much dried up the marker covering his face in all kinds of ridiculous facial hair faux pas'. Explain why you let a strange man draw on your face with a marker to your fiancee and you see why Brian wins. Alexis, Jav and I stay up till 430 waiting for Brian to come home since he wanted to hang out with the girl some more. We promptly wake up at 8 to go pick up Seattle at the airport.

I honestly can't wait till all the photos are up. Navid hosted Goldsprints 3 times this past week. First at Sluggos which was awesome because he broke lot of roller racing cherries that night. Ryan was working the bar Thursday night. Unfortunately more people road in the van than we could afford to give rides home too. DC showed up that night. Jason was classy as ever. Shane and Meghan epitomized happily married as per usual. Things got a little bit better. Navid, Ryan and I left the bar at about 3am. Everyone else had been gone long ago. Athens showed up while we were loading the van. I was at my wit's end after 3 meals and 3 races at Sluggos. I just wanted to go to sleep. Then the transmission dropped out of the van.

We made it home around 5am after finally getting the tranny to catch. I had sacrificed polo on Wednesday to help Navid so I definitely wanted to play on Thursday. We got everyone and everything down to the beach, piled into the house and hit the court. This place was plush. So smooth but not for the lack of a firm grip. The walls were something similar to a jersey barrier that could be filled with water. Even without water thought they rebounded the ball real well and played real well. Couple this perfect court with the 100 yard walk to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and you have perfect x 2.

It was raining on Friday but that didn't stop about 50-60 people showing up for Goldsprints at the Paradise Bar. We held it outside on a patio and Brian and I hung a wall of plastic on the bay side of the patio but it wasn't enough to deter the wet. People braved the wet and wind for several hours but it became to much and we resorted to getting smadhed and showing the hotel room how OOTA does it. At this point Dumptruck was in his boxers jumping off the pier. Jason was getting dry raped by Sean RVA. During the night I count t least 12 people wearing RVA polo shirts. Natives and the other out of towners who know not of OOTA got a lesson or just plain missed out on the real party.

Saturday morning St Louis made breakfast. RVA made mallets. OOTA made polo. Beach court got filled early and emptied soon after to go to the parking lots and set up the barriers. By 2ish the first games of the round robin were being played and the tournament was under way. 22 teams in total. everyone plays everyone. There was supposed be something like 400 games and the parking lots closed at 9. Needless to say we didn't finish.

I want to talk about the polo but I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. There was an obvious skill level difference between the teams who travel regularly and everyone else. There were a lot of teams whom I enjoyed watching and saw a lot of potential in their future games.

NOLA I've seen pictures of you guys playing on top of an abandoned supermarket. You get style points for Street Fighter Polo Court Background (ie. between interstate overpasses, on the beach, on a barge, rock quarry, etc). Keep at it.

Fort Lauderdale I didn't get to hang out with you guys too much or really even talk to you much. I liked what I saw from you guys on the court though. A good mix of wheel speed and ball handling finesse. It was entertaining. Hope to see you up north sometime.

Columbus was another stunner. Peter, Adam; I got to play pickup with both of you and though I was dicking around just about everyday before the tourney I watched you guys during and was real impressed. I hope to see you guys again at New York, Philly, MKE or Boston even.

Seattle I know you guys get shit on a lot cuz the game you play is different from how everyone else plays or whatever. Frankly as long as it's entertaining then nothing else really matters. This is why I don't think any game made a shit's worth of difference after RVA vs Seattle. Leon you said it. I'm typing it. As far as I'm concerned that was the final game. I can make excuses about time keeping and other minor gripes but hands down that was in my mind one of the best games. You're welcome for the chocolate and the bike fight wins. Amanda I'm saving a clean piece of flesh for you to cut. Congratulations on your win. Don't get used to it though RVA is coming all over your backs. Aaron I apologize one last time for dislocating your shoulder. Thank you so much for putting up with Sean and Ben. You guys were awesome.

DC we didn't get to play against each other as a team. I substituted at one point for a Pensacola 2 member and it was sooo much fun. Any time a small wire framed old man such as myself can throw a hulking brutish mass such as Shane to the ground twice in a game is way more entertaining than actually winning. Meghan I still remain unclear as to why you didn't pass to me. Jason. Thank you so much for throwing your disk wheel into the gulf and then swimming it down and boogie boarding it back into land. That right there was a perfect visual analogy for my whole week.

Ottawa you know how I feel about you fellas. Ange thanks for letting Nick and I substitute for your teammates rather than skipping those games. I was honored and glad to play with you.

Last but not least I'd like to thank JT and Nick for letting me be your teammate. This was our first tournament as a team. We didn't spend a whole lot of time together due to my self-inflicted involvement with Goldsprints and taking care of the van. We didn't podium. I was certain we could. My eagerness may have gotten the best of me but in retrospect we never allowed five goals against in any game. All our games went to time regardless of how shitty the time keeping was. We made the best sweat. I'm proud of you boys and glad you were there with me. Sean and Ben I can't tell you how impressed I was with your game play also. You picked up a random third on the fly and made the best of it; literally. You guys were a treat to watch. I never enjoyed talkin shit so much in all my life.

Thank you everyone who bought RVA shirts. We know they are awesome. More will be available at the ESPIs if you didn't get a size or color you wanted. Please stop asking about RVA cycling caps. We can't supply all the Richmond players much less anyone out of town regardless of how much money you offer. OOTA patches are in the works. If anyone wants to send me some cash to help support / guarantee your teams get some then look me up (skandlous@gmail.com). If you dopn't know what OOTA is then you don't get any.

I don't really have anything else to say except this past week was amazing. Everyone that didn't come for the whole week knew immediately upon arrival that they had missed something epic. Everyone that didn't come at all essentially failed at life. Any questions or drunken clarification will be recollected to the best of my abilities.

you forgot about playing "pick up" with 6 players at the beach on monday and then pick up on the downtown courts at night.

thanks ian for all your help and support this last week cant wait to cause trouble again and help you out with anything you need in richmond or wherever we may cross paths!

CSI, Toyota, Oregon Championships, Traverse City Bike Polo, 818, My likeness is all over the place, I should be getting royalties or something. I'd settle for a T-Shirt... Whaddaya say FLA?

This was my first tournament, and the level of play was exactly what I expected. With only four months of play under our belts, we have a lot of work ahead of us. I'm planning on coming to at least the Worlds, and hopefully several more this year.

Highlights from the weekend include:

-Angelo wandering into our house Friday night. Then me convincing him that I didn't know where Canada(?) was.

-Frazier threatening to kick everyone out of "the fraternity" for not helping him finish the 1.75L bottle of Ushers. Followed by the most awful guttural sounds coming from the downstairs bedroom.

-Jeff's note in the guestbook.

-NOLA taking first (Willie) and third (Jace) in the beachcat, and first (Willie) in the Goldsprints.

-The "Broken Spoke Incident of 2009."

-The most intense and fun game of polo I've ever played against HBP on Sunday. (I reviewed the tape and it looks like Shane was comfy napping in the goal. No matter since we could never connect with the fucking ball.)

Everyone was super cool, and I can't wait to see y'all again on the courts in the future.

P.S. Keep a look out for the Bayou Invitational.

I had a great time. And what I'm about to say is in no way meant to be a knock on the organizers or participants, who I know gave everything they had to the effort. Which worked, cos I had a great time. What follows is just one schmuck's opinion:

Liked:
Communal housing.
Setting. Duh.
Attitude of the event and the people at it.
Mix of seasoned and newer teams/cities.

Disliked:
The courts. Even if the barriers had been on a smooth surface, they still would have been dangerous.
No food on site.
No announcements. I didn't know that we weren't going to finish the round robin until we started the elimination. Who was playing next announcements were also spotty.

Suggestions:
Get and use a PA and big board consistently.
Have some food or some grills around.
Have some dedicated volunteers to set stuff up. Locals or travelers, sober folk who wake up early and can use zip ties in the rain. I would've helped had I known.
Talk with other clubs about rotating host duties. Apparently Ft Lauderdale has two side by side rinks on the beach. Direct flights are cheaper to there as well. I have no other details and could be wrong about those two.

I had a great time. I recognize what everyone there did to make it a great time, most of all Ryan. I ain't hatin'. Just trying to be helpful.

I fully understand the dislikes and suggestions. None of the dislikes were meant to happen.

Our original intentions after using the tennis courts as number 2 and 3 courts was shut down by the island authority we tried to set into motion to build free standing walls well since we had to scramble some of our connections couldn't come through. so our second attempt even was shut down by lack of funds which was to have leaning walls on the barricades and mesh netting on top to keep the balls in play. So we made what we could afford.

Since the first year was a success as far as the island authority goes next will be easier to host. I am already starting to work on a couple plans neither will include the event being held where it was held this time around.

As far as FTL goes i want there to be a tournament there also but want to keep our event yearly. Couple ideas would be to have a November tournament there. In FTL summer rentals are actually cheaper then winter rentals thats why Pensacola Beach is so good for Feb tournament plus we have a beach home and inn sponsorship and its the end of off season rates to make it cheaper! Everything in FTL is more expensive also. but i think a great tournament will be held there. beginning and ends of season tournaments in florida! hopefully our set up in pensacola will become just as good as FTL.

thanks lucky for your input and cant wait for next year when things will be taken care of a lot farther in advance!

I figured it was something like that. I just never got the chance to talk with you about it over the weekend. Thanks for the response. I will definitely be back next year, hopefully for a few more days and with my own room at one of the beach houses.

Thanks for coming and playing with us beforehand, now that we've played against some of you guys we should definitely be more prepared for upcoming tournaments.
I will be in DC and Boston and most likely Philly, hopefully we'll be able to get full teams up for ESPI and Worlds.

Most definitely. Every time I've been around Ryan he's usually trying to get some plans together for traveling or contacting a band. That's his thing. His list of contacts comes from years of work. The dude travels way more than most of us locals, just to work his contacts and maintain his networking. It's pretty cool to watch and I respect him for it.
Ryan, I remember how bummed you were when that page of your red book ripped out on the way to ORL.

I need to be more social...but everything was so fascinating last weekend I couldn't help but to just sit back and go along with the flow of everything. I was around for alot of the shenanigans but I was quiet...I had a ton of fun though. I thought it was curious how my story preceded me. If you know what it is...I'm that guy.

We're all trying to get more people interested in this game of polo. Alot of the kids at the local (kinda) University and colleges are interested and do ride bikes a little. But they all feel that they have to build special polo bikes to play. Plus the University is like 12 mi or so from downtown where we play. Most of these kids are lazy, don't ride, or "too busy" to come out to polo. I know riding or driving 12mi. is nothing to those in real cities, but again, Pcola locals are different than any other locals.

Oh and 3 of our local players (stephen, Elrite, and Anthony) were dealing with fevers or the flu. They played but stayed quiet for most of the weekend.

Excuses, excuses...but that's how things go.

either way I am having one of the best months ever, last weekend contributed alot. I want to play so much better now and travel to get more experience with tourney play. Hopefully I can make it up to the ESPIs in May.

The tournament was a good time. Being a rookie to the polo scene it was certainly an eye opener. Atlanta has a lot of work to do to step up our game. Thanks for getting this all together. Despite the short comings it was worth the trip for sure. We are discussing holding a small tournament in Atlanta on the Summer Solstice, but there will be news of that later, and hopefully our game will have stepped up a bit by then.

Thanks to Athens and FTL for being such gracious hosts in that over packed beach house.

first of all thanks everyone for coming down. some of my favorite people were Ottawa, Seattle, kremin, and boston, Dc, St cago, and RVA. basically the people i got to stay with. i appreciate everyone else i didnt stay with though. i learned so much from all of you, throwin dice with rva! beermosa's with st. cago, and how to drink for weeks at a time from canada! i hope everyone had a really fun time. i definitely did. and from what i heard i will be able to see you all again if not really soon then next year. thanks for the best week ever! i'm glad i could help out.

Thanks to everyone who had a hand in putting this together.....DC had an awesome time!
It was great to see old friends, and make new ones.
Hopefully we'll see you guys soon.

wtf IS this blue bike?

I wants one.

CONFUSION TO OUR ENEMIES!!

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy.

Old Haro. The elevated chainstay idea was so that there would be no chain slap when going down rough terrain. Yeti and I think Nishiki had similar frames during the same time.
