Bluegrass State Games Invitational Polo Tournament in Lexington

As part of Kentucky's annual Bluegrass State Games, Lexington has managed to get hardcourt bike polo added as an official sport this year. To our knowledge, only Lexington and Louisville have squads within the state. Although the BGSG is traditionally open only to those athletes residing in the state of Kentucky, they are allowing us to open this event up to those players living in the states that border Kentucky (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Virgina and West Virginia), in order to expand the competition. If you live in those states and would like to make the drive down for a fun day of polo, you are certainly welcome. I would love to have this tourney open to anyone, but since this organization is fitting the bill and calling the shots, we have to honor their requests to keep it limited.

Registration will be $30 per team if you register IN ADVANCE, but if you wait to register the day-of, the fee goes up to $45. So save that cash for gas money and register in advance!

The online registration is pretty standard stuff, but it may be worded kind of strange. Basically, one person acts as "captain" of the team and is responsible for registering and paying the fee for all three players. At this time there is no way to advance register as an individual, but if you show up the day of, I'm sure we can place you with a team.

For more information and registration, please visit:
http://www.bgsg.org/hardcourt-bike-polo

You can also email me at: brokebike(at)gmail(dot)com if you have any further questions.

Thanks!

Looking forward to this, no matter how hot KY gets in the summer.

can we lie and say we are from Illinois?

Hope you guys can make it Keith, because I know three dudes looking for a Chicago rematch!

{}------- lexington -------{}

{}------- lexington -------{}

forgot to mention that we have two courts of equal size, so we can play consecutive games. We're working on getting some boards up around the fencing to separate the courts and make for better all-around play.

{}------- lexington -------{}

{}------- lexington -------{}

Several of you I have already contacted via PM's, but just to reiterate, Chicago, Indy, COMO, STL, Dayton, Cincy, Cleveland, Columbus, Louisville, Richmond... we're looking at you folks! Does anyone know of teams in TN or WV???

{}------- lexington -------{}

{}------- lexington -------{}

i'm guessing your silence on the issue means that it would be totally fine to register my team as from normal Illinois?

Maybe Chicago & Wisconsin (MAD/MKE) can mix up some players to make teams?

Sorry Jonny... didn't mean to ignore your post. All I can say is, I'm just not sure how it would play out with the registration. All of the advance, on-line stuff would be handled by the organization, so if you paid with a credit card, and the billing showed Madison, WI... I'm just not sure what they would say at that point. Like I said, I'd really love to be able to welcome anyone and everyone into this, and I don't like the thought of having an invite-only tournament as our first real hosting here in Lex, but I would hate to tell you that you should go ahead and chance it, and then have Games organizers put the foot down on you - then I would feel like a total ass.

Normal, IL sounds like a great place to say you're from, though! Good first pick.

Just a reminder... the online registration cutoff is now 2 weeks away, so please save your team $15 and pre-register. This will also help us figure out how many teams we can expect, which will be helpful.

Is this gonna be a in a rink or somethign?

No, our court is not as nice as a rink, unfortunately. The city ran us off all the roller rinks in town because they bitched about tire marks.

We're still working on it, but our polo court facility is an old four-court tennis area enclosed by a 12ft high chain-link fence. Imagine four tennis courts all side by side. We've divided it into two polo courts, with each court taking up roughly the space of two tennis courts. There will be some sort of boards in place to keep the ball in play... if you've seen photos of some of the recent tournaments that have constructed temporary boards (usually 2ft high), then that is what you can expect here. One side may be a bit nicer than the other depending on how much money we can pool together for materials.

{}------- lexington -------{}

{}------- lexington -------{}

This is pretty much exactly what ATL did at their tourney and it worked out very well.

OoOoO pretty! One St Louis team will be attending. We'll register tonight. Me, Nick, and our super-rookie Ben (who made the lock-in poster).

We tried to put two teams together, but you're competing with the "Night Of Fire" drag races that weekend. Seems like a silly excuse, but if anyone can understand it, someone from KY can.

I want to go to this, trying to get 2 more COMO players to come. If I can't, I'll probably come alone looking for a team. MY NAME IS PETE, I PLAY BIKE POLO, LET ME PLAY FOR YOU~

LBP_of_C0M0P0L0 ----[] o

someone should definetly scoop up Pete for their team. he cooks a mean pasta ratatouille, raps like an OG, oh and absolutely destroys it on the hardcourt.

Hardcourt Bike Polo Connoisseur

someone should scoop up Scoops?!
don't do that, i want him on my team

Ill work on that

Ifuckinglovepolo

A few folks have been emailing me asking for a schedule, so here goes:

Tournament play will begin as close to Noon as possible on Saturday the 25th. We'll see how many teams we have and determine whether or not we can do the whole thing on one court, or open up both of them (one has brand new boards all the way around, the other has partial boards). Either way, I'm hoping we'll have the tourney finished up by 8pm.

Afterwards, we'll arrange some sort of backyard party, complete with fire and booze so folks can hang out and rage until whenever.

For those who wish to stay in town overnight, we'll be playing pickups on both courts all day Sunday.

Again, for those who are definitely coming, please pre-register before the 22nd! That's only two days away...

thanks!

We have a team registered & maybe 1 extra player from Chicago.

Sweet! Who ended up being on your team, Keith? Thanks for stopping by during Pitchfork. It was good to see you and Claire again.

{}------- lexington -------{}

{}------- lexington -------{}

The Comosexuals are registered, it might be the same team that got 2nd in ATL or it might be me and 2 guys from Cinci, WHO KNOWS, WHO CARES, LET'S PLAY SOME BIKE POLO!

LBP_of_C0M0P0L0 ----[] o

It's set, same team from ATL is heading to Lexington, catch you bike nerds on Saturday.

LBP_of_C0M0P0L0 ----[] o

Lex has 5 teams registered, but a ton more individuals who may need a team as well. We all know our way around a polo court, I promise.

I registered a team for Columbus. There might be another team headed down too. How many teams in total are registered?

All packed up and ready to go, now all that has to happen is my students need to finish their finals. Lexington here I come.

Hey- Pedal Republic of Cleveland will be there. At least two teams. Team Squad Squad: me, lou, and dan. Another one in the works. Your grass better be blue.

We are trying to locate your flag!

I think we have 10 or 11 teams right now and 5 or so teams on there way. This weekend is going to be the FUCKING jam

Cincinnati headed down in 45 min.

Thanks to everyone who came down for this. Fortunately the weather cooperated, even though there were impending thunderstorms forecast for the entire day. 17 teams total. Felt good to have the COMO guys tell me that this was one of the smoothest run tourneys they've played in yet (aw shucks, guys).

1st: COMO (Comosexuals)
2nd: LEXINGTON (Tripple Lexxx)
3rd: DAYTON (Two Appalachians & A Knee-gra)

Nick from St. Louis scored the most goals, and won himself an SE Draft frame.

Thanks again. Now I gotta go meet the rest of you guys at the bar and drink some bourbon.

{}------- lexington -------{}

{}------- lexington -------{}

Holy shit, Knobbe won a frame?! Go Missouri!

OGT-COMOPOLO

Bike Polo Ronin

4th was Cincy B+!!

Yeah COMO!!!! Congratulations!! Triple Lex, Chicago sincerely missed attending this tourney and playing you again. Sat. or Sun. - whatever - next year, when we hear even the mention of the weekend, we're taking the whole damn thing off. Nicky "Two Scoops" - now you have an even bigger bike to ride. Congrats.

Triple Lexxx had a man down from the night before, Shane sprain his wrist so we picked up Tiff and represented almost took it as a co-ed team. Thank every one for coming to our humble city, Chicago we will see you next time we want a grudge match. And COMO you guys are awesome because you have cooked me breakfast the past two days witch im going to eat right now!!

Ifuckinglovepolo

3 things:

1st. St Louis had a great time - everyone at this tourney had a great attitude and the play was really clean.

2nd. Big ups to our third player Ben, who came with Nick and I to Lexington with one month of pick-up bike polo under his belt. Rookie of the year.

3rd. Let's not go nuts about this frame that Nick won. We're thrilled for the recognition, but there is an inglorious story about the frame in question. Let's just say it was donated more by the city of Lexington than by SE bikes.

Chicago Bike Polo 2003-2008

Agreed on the SE frame, Lucky. But we thought it would make someone a good polo bike or beater. We had to have some sort of prize for most goals, and it was either that, or a Knog cap. Maybe the cap would've been more valuable???

Two stray items were found after the tournament; a helmet and a floor pump. If you're missing either of these, please email alex(at)press817(dot)com with a description and we'll make sure these get back to the rightful owner somehow.

{}------- lexington -------{}

{}------- lexington -------{}

No one's complaining about the prize. It's just funny to see that someone was all; 'wow a frame' regarding what we knew to be a little less 'wow'.

Anyway - Buffalo trace is closed on Sundays and Woodford Reserve doesn't open 'till 12:30, so I had to buy my bourbon back in StL. It was a pleasant drive though, and I've got a case of Ale 8 in the fridge. Cheers to you, Lexington!

P.S. to Tommy: I can't believe we had to tell you not to touch the roadkill 'possum this morning. Good luck beatin' the heat in Savannah.

Savannah Bike Polo has finally made it back home. Thank you SO MUCH everyone for being there and thank you Lexington for putting on such a great tourney. And thanks to all the bartenders that put up with my drunk ass at Al's and the sidecar. Drew Andy and Kyle- Thanks a million for providing a roof and a floor. Tell Sweet Tea and the other pup we say hello.

And nick- thanks for the body slam. I just found out about that today. There's fire crackers rolling around in my disc now. Congrats to you Comosexuals for winning.

Seeing you get wheeled out of a bar on a hand truck was a good one. Then you saying thank you made it even better.

Lexington Bike Polo OG - Retired (Still show up and heckle though)

hahaha i'm glad you enjoyed it. fabian said it was near impossible to get me into the car. once i've been drinking i hate entering vehicles. i fell in love with lexington this weekend. i hope to visit again! hopefully i can get up to the college park, md tourney.

First place for getting thrown out of the bars three different times!

Oh yeah, Cleveland also got their flag back. I just think COMO got tired of lugging it around.

Sunburnt, and hungover. What a great way to end a polo tournament.

I'm a big wad of bloody hot damnation

First off- props to all of the Lexington folks that organized the tournament and kept everything running smoothly. Nobody had much more time to rest between games than anyone else through the whole bracket. Thanks times infinity to Chris and Tiffany for housing us, even though I was accosted by your dogs in the middle of the night and the wee hours of the morning. All the Lexington folk were awesome, and the sidecar is the type of bar that the COMO guys want to open (badly). Thanks to all the teams that made the trip, ATL, Savannah (still learning, but learning quickly!), Dayton (drink less next time you play us, maybe it'll be a bit closer), Cincy, STL (CUUDDDDLLEEEE), Cleveland (keep the flag safe), it was good to see many of you again. This was the best run tournament I've been to and probably the most fun.

Same time next year? It's a date <3 <3 <3

{}------- lexington -------{}

Lexington, thanks for a killer weekend. You definitely showed stl a good time. You broke in our newbie ben really well, thanks! Hope to see you at midwests and the lock-in this fall and winter.

Tommy and the rest of Savannah it was great to share a residence with you, keep it real and see you soon! (Come experience a winter in the midwest for the lock-in!).

All the talk about the frame, its a used SE track frame, with one piece bmx cranks. My understanding is it sat outside for 3 months while everyone piked it to the bone. The frame and cranks were all that were left.

The real story is COMO! Congrats and way to represent MO! Missouri is proud of you. Friendlies in august here we come!

Big Tides!
