Hello European Bike Polo Teams

We're glad to invite you to the first European Hardcourt Bike Polo Showdown. The Tournament will take place on the 18th of october as a part of the Bicycle Film Festival in Zurich. We have confirmed registration form all over Switzerland, Germany and the U.K. Of course the main challenge will be to beat the current european champion Team Basel. We will play in a big warehouse so you dont have to worry about weather and temperature. Besides Polo and the Movies there will be other Bike Messenger related stuff going on all over the weekend. So we promise that the journey to Switzerland will definitely be worth it. If you're interested in entering the Bike Polo Tournament please write an email to jerome@thiriet.net to register. More Info and a flyer will be up soon. Check back on fahrradkurier.ch for updates!

Very excited for this... Been working on my Schweizerdeutsch!

I can't wait!

I need name suggestions for an all girls international bike polo team: NYC and Zurich. The Swiss Misses?

Pieter, are you coming for this?

Can you guys work on changing the exchange rate? I'd love to make a pilgrimage to the old country.

From your surname I'd guess that the "old country" is... Ohio?

Seriously, though. Have a great tournament.

Which means: one less team = more time to play for you!!!!!!! YEEEEEEHA! Looking forward to that saturday of quality european polo! and pssssst: prizes worth over 2'000 CHF to be given away. More info soon in the mailbox of every registered team.

Strom what is the format?
Is it straight elimination? Or does everyone get to play more than one game?
Also is there a "regular" Polo court in Zurich? may want to get a few games in on Friday

Yorgo
LONDON: http://bricklanebikepolo.wordpress.com/
PARIS: http://panambikepolo.blogspot.com/

Yorgo

YORGO. Every team should play at least 3 games in the first qualification stage (Groups of 4, everyone plays everyone), then there will be another group stage for the quarter finals and from the semifinal it's knock out. something like that. I decide when I have the exact number of teams competing.

In Zurich they play on a schoolyard on sundays. Don't know if that's suitable for friday.... But you could probalby check out the court in the factory with me...

Never sleep - always deliver

Strom, you're the best. I love the Ice Hockey World Championships format with two group stages. I'm getting really excited for this! Let me know if you want us to bring you anything from USA.

Brilliant!
sounds like a good format. I'm arriving friday morning so may pass by during the day.

Adam - maybe bring some "proper" Franklin balls, I'm sure many of the Euro teams will want to buy some from you.

Yorgo

ah yeah good idea yorgo, i'll bring a bunch of red ones. the package says they're meant to be used at 21°C and above, but in my opinion they're the best choice all the way down to 12°C or so... below that, best to go with the orange (rated 0°C - 21°C), as the red ones get too brittle and will shatter.

hehe. I guess the temperature in the factory will be around 20°C! We have a nice warm spot to play. I might need a new kryptonite (evolution mini). You think you could bring one?

Never sleep - always deliver

Never sleep - always deliver

hell yeah, krypto evo mini? you got it mate!

wow. i'm pumped. i will arrive in zurich on friday morning. strom, you registered me, but i don't think you have my email: cecilyu at gmail dot com. just let me know how to get to the court from the airport. can't wait.

Yeeha Cecily. I got your flight details via Myspace. You'll be picked up at the airport. Here's my phone number in any case: +41793812439

and yeah: I finally got e flyer now....

Never sleep - always deliver

Hey Strom, nice poster by the way. One thing: I'm riding from my house in London to the airport (City Airport, only 20 mins from mine), and was wondering if it was possible to do the same from Zurich Airport to the center of town?

Yorgo
LONDON: http://bricklanebikepolo.wordpress.com/
PARIS: http://panambikepolo.blogspot.com/

Yorgo

YORGO. I don't live in Zurich so I don't know how far it is to ride to the city center from the airport. But it should be very easy to ride it! I just checked it on google maps and it looks fine....

Never sleep - always deliver

Never sleep - always deliver

awesome flyer. i love the lady baller. got a text from judit (i didn't know you could text from switzerland to the u.s.) about playing on her team. it's gonna be rad.

Cecily: Will you bring your own bike or should I organise one for you?

Never sleep - always deliver

Never sleep - always deliver

i wish i could bring my own bike, but i don't think i'll be able to travel with it through the rest of the time i'm in europe since i'll be working. if you can find one for me to use, that would be awesome. i ride 48 - 50, fixed or free, but if it is fixed for polo then brakes, please!

I have the perfect polo bike ready for you (free wheel, front break). You're gonna rule this.

yippeeeee! strom, you're the best. don't let anyone tell you any different.

right. it's a shame that we haven't more time. but I only got one court and we have to leave the factory at 6pm because they have to set up for a party. And starting at 9am is already early....

THANKS ZURICH!

What an awesome weekend. Played polo in a warehouse and in the middle of the street (two firsts for me), ate muesli, stayed out way too late, saw an unidentified animal (which Olie claimed was a bear), and generally enjoyed myself way too much. They've got nice folks in Zurich. A huge thanks to Strom for organizing.

i also shoot some pictures. ;)

thanks to everyone over there. we had such a great time, and the street matches in the evening were so good.

there were moments during the tournement in which i thought fuck all this, this is getting too serious, too tough.
Our match against london was also very tough, but so fun to play. we lost, but it was fun. next time we'll beat them. ;)

...the matches on the street were great. just smooth, well played polo, with mixed teams, like a big family...
this is what it should be...
in my eyes.
anyway. ;)

greets to berlin, frankfurt, lausanne, london, munich, ny, zuerich and all the great people we met there.

karlsruhe loves all of you guys.

alex.

Yeah Doug. Adam and Zach played pretty much 2 against 3 in the whole tournament. they played with a guy from frankfurt but it didn't help. also they said that the court was way too small for them to show their polo skills. and in the end they were unlucky too as none of their thousand shots went in the goal in their last game in round of 16. But I think if they had had a skilled third player it would have been hard to beat them.... We'll see in the next intercontinental tournament!
