It was an invite à la COG. i think there were a few extra spaces but they got snatched pretty quick.

Half invite, half open. Plus there's been serious talk about it around europe for the past month so if you weren't in the know (or on bike polo forums 24-7), you didn't stand a chance of registering...

London, UK.

Mike,
London, UK.

no, this is the bike polo forum, you meant fixie forums that talk about bike polo.

hey karlsrue, make an extra two spots and me and doug and jonny and jon a and kev and a few mke kids will come out and bring some... just open two more spots and well bring it. for instance drop those shitty london teams, and youll have plenty of room.

seriously give me three teams and ill bring them. i hear germany is beautiful in the feb.

three spots im sure you can fit us, right on the top spots of the podium

I'm in.

it was fine, except its a fixie forum, with a bikepolo section. that being said it has good content. could use better organization, and way too much input by the london crew. i can only think of like three people in london that are worth shit. the rest can fuck off. matt i still like you. that leaves the rest of london worring about whom the other two are. heres a hint its not roxy or that fucker she fucks.

Ben, I can only call you ignorant if you think only 3 people in London are worth shit, can here and play, then speak, you only know or remember 10 player out of 60
for the forum, yeah is the bikepolo section of a fixeD forum, and what, 80% of London polo player are in freewheel... does not mean shit. It is polo, like it or not

yes, your right. i know london has a great scene, fucking james brown comes from there for christ sake. Im just talking trash.

I also do agree that the bikepolo part of the fixed gear forum is rad.

europe plays polo, i strongly believe that europe could stand on the podium at worlds. christ they may dominate the podium. North America cant travel to yurps home field advantage and relax. but you boys better get ready! , cause were coming in full force.

we were hoping to play you in Karlsruhe, now we'll have to wait.
and dont worry Europe will be ready for you, just came this time!!

Bikepolo Karlsruhe in happy to announce its first closed door bikepolo tournament.

hardcourtbikepolo.com

Doug, Ben, this just filled up quick. There's been talk about this tournament at both of the two largest tournaments, in Paris and London. So it's been mostly word of mouth, and on regional polo forums.

And since there's only one court, there is not room for many teams.

My hope was that Karlsruhe would bid on EHBPC or WHBPC, cause i know this will be an awesome event. Maybe 2011...

Kevin

then they will have to bid agains madison, were making a bid for both the euros, worlds and nas next year. we figure it it will allow for

more polo more often by more people

( we had to drop the more places part since were actually going against that )

ben

This. Will. Rock.

Booking train tickets from London now.

Great tournament in perspective.

Way too fast by the way, hate being such a whiner but can we except one or two more teams? one?

if anyone needs a 3rd lemme know and i'm there

I am really looking forward to this! It's great to see so many people from all around Europe coming to Karlsruhe! Scha la la

I love the format, something different to the rest

Rik
Berlin Bike Polo 2010
London Bike Polo 2008 - 2010

Fuck Yeah! We have been waiting for this so long!

anybody needs a 3rd? I´m in.

can't wait to meet all you guys again. it's been a long time for me without a tournament. :)

@doug and ben
write a nice email to hannes if you would really like to come over. (hannes@greifmasters.com )
i don't know if it's possible in any way. I'm not involved in this topic but it's worth a try and more effective than to talk "bad" about the tournament because it's limited. i think you know what i mean. :)

cheers.

YES!!

i have no idea what you mean. also i only talk bad, its just how it is, i lost all positive perspective. also i only communicate through this forum, its easier that way. complete transparency.

@hannes please give us a place at your tournament. a spot for two teams or three, we promise to slay the other teams quickly with mercy, in fact haveing us at your tournament will actually make having your tournament more possible as we will knock out teams fast and hard. also we will be gentle. we will be riding free wheels and there not broken either.

disclaimer (intended for those who speak english as a second language) : any and all words are meant for humor and are not intended to insult, most of the time.

Hi Ben, Hi Doug, Hi everybody,

we were really surprised by the big and fast run to our registration.
we pre-invited 14 teams. another 14 teams "first come, first served".

i didn't expect that some us teams would like to come (because the worlds are also in germany next year).

i have a waiting list of 12 teams already (including the 3 teams you talked about).

we talked for hours how to handle with this new situation,
because we definitely want you guys over here!!!

here is the solution:
we have the court on friday already.
we start the tournament on friday. starting with the the 12 "waiting list" teams.
if some other teams are also already around on friday (i know that a lot of teams definitely are) we can mix it a little bit (makes sense i guess).
every team (40 teams) still plays its 6 games (as planned for the 28 team tournament)

Now it's up to you. we give place for 3 american teams.

Can't wait such a big bikepolo event happening in Karlsruhe!

Cheers, Hannes.

shit, now i got to back up the talk. ok ill let you know, thanks for being accepting, and modifying the format, i was mostly just teasing, but its really kind of you to offer options. ill start a thread and see if we can come out.

hey ben,

no problem. i guessed that a little bit while reading your post.
we still really hope seeing some teams from the states over here.
if not in Karlsruhe it will be in Berlin latest.

and the best thing about you teasing us is, that the other european "waiting list" teams are now in.
so they have to thank you a little bit, hehe.

and if you come over, i think some of the shitty london team would also love to slay you guys quickly with mercy.
and also the clowns would love to have you in their circus-arena. "with the clowns came the tears!"

disclaimer: this time some of my words (as a person who speaks english as a second language) are meant for humor and are not intented to insult...

Team "Greif Bastards"!!!

Check the update: http://greifmasters.com/?p=208

Schedule & Rules:
http://greifmasters.com/HandOut.pdf

Just a question:
What does the rules mean by:
"If ball is cupped up to goals, it has to be passed once before scoring."

"to goals"?
near the goal? touching the goal? Are the goal zone gonna be drawing on the ground?

totally agree with Uolmo, this is not nearly precise enough and it is a notoriously divisive rule. It will be fine most of the time but what if this happens in the last seconds of a knockout game? The team which is scored on is gonna be mighty pissed off (justifiably so!) if the goal is allowed. I would recommend all rules be very precise, I think "no balljointing beyond halfcourt" is such a rule.

This is gonna be the best Euro tourney yet, or at least the most competitive. There are a lot of good teams here. Fucking sweet!

MALICE for the people.

CAN'T FUCKING WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIT!

Gonna be really hard to get to the final round...

a handful of photos from day 1 at http://www.flickr.com/photos/kev_walsh/sets/72157623235700715/show/

the building is some crazy conference center

slippery floors but not more than what i'm used to from Toronto, and apparently similar to the Hollywood court

massive screen

ref chairs

40 teams, 8 countries, maybe 20 cities.

people stoked to see each other.

the goals look awesome.

Nice little album function thingy there sir.

We talked about tennis ref-style chairs for tournaments just a few days ago. Awesome to see them in use. Furthermore, from the looks of it, Karlsruhe has implemented all of the good ideas we'll have for the next five years.

Karlsruhe builds the first Hardcourt Time Machine!

(duplicate from london forum...)
great games today. The court is very frustrating because of its slippery surface. Very treacherous, and turning around is tricky. The mega screen is the best thing. The barriers are perfect, especially the big angled corners. Not a single second lost fetching the ball from there, no chasing the ball around round corners like on hockey rinks, and better than small angles. New standard in polo court shape for me.

Globally the level of the top Euro teams is getting more equal. i.e. L'equipe get scored on, Toros loose games, BAD have to fight, etc...

MVTeam: Polosynthesis. Mind-blowing. I predict a final between them and L'equipe if they get through

Results from Day 1 ...

i have seen the future and i looks good...

Portland United

Results:

1st: L'Équipe (Geneva)
2nd: Toros (Munich)
3rd (tie): Dans Ta Gueule Puceau (Paris) and Zombie RMY (London)

MVP David from Frankfurt, 18 years old i think, looks and plays a bit like Brian.

Did L'Equipe ever play DTGP?

In bff 2009 paris if im right...
In Karlsruhe it was realy realy realy realy close to have an DTGP-l'équipe EPIC Final.

Toros l'equipe was incredible, but a lil' touch of "déjà-vu".

So, you going home through Alsace?... If so, what are you taking home? Details! Via email. Please.

Incredible tournament!
All was perfect...
Thanks to every people who make this happen like this.

Cheap beer
Fuck yes indoor
Good level of polo, even if the surface made games "double dutch polo with a goalie"...

Best moment:
Winning of "l'équipe" 3-4 ; 4-4 ; 5-4
Our games against Malice and Zombie, even if i suck a lil' bit...

YOUHAOUAHOUA!!!!!!!!!

L'Equipe (Geneva) vs Toros (Munich)

Found this on the London forum.

Boring...looks like the surface was too slick for the teams to get up to speed. 2 on 2 with goalies is not for spectators but it can be a winning formula

The court's surface definitely slowed down the turning (more slippery than the toronto court), as did its size (20x29m), which pretty much requires a goalkeeper. Only a few teams had three strong players that could rotate out equally to keep it interesting.

The most exciting team at the tournament was Frankfurt, and they are used to playing on a much larger court. I felt bad that they couldn't really show off their game.

But the L'Equipe/Toros game was definitely more interesting than a crappy video can show, just like that video of Ballz Deep / Smile in the finals in Philly. No offense to videographers...

kev wrote:

I know this is a question for another place, but seeing so many teams leave a goalie in the whole time made me think that we should have been playing reset to goal after a goal, as we do in London.

That would have given an advantage to teams that rotate the goalie, and made for more attacking play.

I don't really get that, about returning to the D. if it gives an advantage at all it would be really minor and would happen no more than 4 times per game. Many games in Karlsruhe didn't even have 5 goals scored total.

Bigger courts! Less goalies!

The experience in LA on huge courts a couple weeks ago did not support the "bigger courts, less goalies" theory. There were only about two teams that did not use the perma-goalie strategy. It seems that teams were just as worried about long breakaways on the big court as they would be for long shots on short courts.

@le jackal: for the record, what do you guys play? I saw you in philly play but either was too drunk to really remember or well, too drunk to remember. I seem to recall you guys being used as an example of less goalie action, do you still do that? If not why not?

in philly and all last summer we played no goalie and were one of the few teams to do so in tournament play, especially toward the end of the season. in san francisco we played with a goalie for certain games against other goalies, in los angeles i actually played goalie in the finals when trying to slow down the tempo of the game (it felt weird) but abandoned it in favour of big rushes. i think the best strategy is to be flexible and use it wisely.

in pick-up there is rarely a goalie, but i imagine that is like most places.

the goalie strategy is very interesting in the evolution of our sport. as much as i dislike it there are certain advantages that make it worthwhile at certain times. teams with two stronger players can get by with a weaker third in net. teams that keep running into each other seem to play better after sticking a goalie in net. teams running out the clock can switch to a goalie strategy. teams can rest a tired player in goal, especially on huge courts. players who smash into the boards can afterward play goalie when they can barely ride their bicycles...

all good points, and i think there are more good reasons to have a goalie, like tiring out the other team.

but out of top 10 teams in Philly last year very few played a goalie on the big court.

I would argue that half employed a general goalie and half didn't. More to come in the future. In Europe L'equipe are on top with that strategy so other teams will mimic as we see with teams mimicking Seattle style

Seattle - Seabass
RVA - JT
Philly/NYC - Alex
Milwaukee - Kremin

all goalies first scorers second

wrong, kremin for a few weeks played as a goalie, now he plays a much more diverse position. come on, just cause your big doest mean you have to be stupid. speaking of which why the fuck have you not registered for bench minor, im your fucking captain for christ sake

Every tournament I saw Kremin play in last year he was goalie first score second. Dude can roll so maybe he is venturing further from the net now but that is how I saw it at North American's and worlds (but you guys play every few weeks I only see him at tournaments)

Bench Minor - bad timing and silly Adam rules. Didn't you here Pieter say Cascadia wasn't travelling this year?

I can be big and dumb if I want

this game shows why there must be some regulation about goalies and parking in front of the goal. DTGP controls the ball way more and has a much more dynamic game. This is why there are rules in the NBA about 3 seconds in the lane and a shot clock.

or just get bigger courts. shit i sound like a broken record.

in any case, i wish i had geared down for this court, i never maxed out once.

Could they not push them out of the goal? Was there a no off the ball contact rule?

James, the goalie, is huge, and well protected by Eddy, who is one of the strongest physical players out there. there wasn't really room to even ride between them.

for the record Kev: as much as I truly enjoyed watching you and Hugo waltz together out there, you had a perma-goalie bitch all game every game. Not sure why either, Pierre's got some game these days.

hey i'm not critizing the perma-goalie strategy, if anything i'm supporting it on small courts. but pierre played awesome the whole weekend with a bruised rib.

OK so if you are fine with the perma goalie, what's your thoughts on making the goal a whole lot bigger. not nec higher, just wider, much bigger than one bike much less than two bikes. Do you think it would up the skill of a goalie?

I always liked this idea, make the goal like 20 cm wider, more room in front of and behind the wheels.

will wrote:

Could they not push them out of the goal? Was there a no off the ball contact rule?

yes there was a no off-the ball contact rule. And a ref who in theory would enforce it but it rarely came up. It would be more or less against the spirit of the game over here.

That's probably the only reason I wouldn't want to play in a European tournament. Goalies are always 'on-the-ball'. I think it makes for boring polo.

you really wanna get involved with NBA defensive 3 seconds rule?!! that is one of the most poorly understood and inconsistently called rules I ever saw. And they have 3 professional refs on each game. mad props to anyone who can come up with a practical rule to get people out of the goals...A bigger goal would at least force the goalie to be dynamic. I mean a lot bigger goal, like a bike and a half wide.

with a goal this wide, you have the risk to have a "two permanent goalies" strategy... A lil bit like the 3 goalies strategy from Toros in the final...

But the discussion about wider goals is a discuss already done on this board.

hannes any chance of sharing the scoreboard software so the graphics can be modified and it can be reused for other tournaments?

HurricaneJosh: get in contact with Morgan. He wrote the software, and mentioned something like making it available.

Hi!
Max (Karlsruhe), Morgan and Gabes (London) talked about finalising the software soonish. We still had some (just small) bugs. Get in touch with them for details: max@fixie-inc.com
It was definitely a really good help and made a lot of things easier.
Cheers!

Yes, the plan is to put the software (which Max wrote, I just did the big screen part) on github.com so anyone can use and contribute to. Killer work Max.

57 kegs a tourny bitch!

Thank you! Merci! Grazie! Teşekkürler!
Bedankt!Gracias! Kiitos! Danke Schön!

What a weekend!!!
We are really happy that in the end you all made it to the Greif Masters 2010.It was unbelievable to see the whole european bikepolo family gathered here in Karlsruhe. And I'm extraordinarily happy that you all had a great time and enjoyed being here.
It was definitely worth the effort.

Thanks to all of you for making this whole thing happen.
Thanks for the reffing!!!
Thanks to all our sponsors and supporters.
Thank you FIXIE inc.
Thanks to the Bikepolo Karlsruhe Orga-Team!!!

And actually we are glad we still left enough space for improvement (missing presentation, slippery court, inconsistent reffing...) for the Greif Masters 2011.

With love!
Hannes (your circus director)

P.S.: My favorite quote of the weekend: The first thing Steffens father noticed: "This is definitely the sport with the most beards!"
