Interbike 2009 Bike Polo Tournament and Exhibition

Thursday, September 24, 2009
Host club:
Athens GA Bike Polo
Contact info:
gtg007a@gmail.com
Court size:
120x60

Swagger has graciously decided to set up a lighted polo court in the parking lot of Mandalay Bay. Right next to the Course for the USA Crit Finals. We'll be setting the court up on Tuesday and It'll be there till Friday when we break it down. Feel Free to come play when you want. Thursday night during the USA Crit Series Finals we'll be having a small tournament open to anyone in Vegas. We'll randomly select teams and try to make them even. We should have enough bikes to loan them out if people need polo bikes. So bring your mallet to Interbike and Lets play some polo on the Vegas strip.

Cost is $10, which we'll divide up 50% to the winning team along with whatever prizes we have, and 50% to help finish paying off the lights. We also have a deal with Mandalay Bay, $20 for 5 beers.

Schedule:
Tuesday/Wednesday: Random pickup polo at the court whenever, we'll figure this out.
Thursday:
6:30 Meet at the Court in the Parking long of Mandalay Bay. We'll play a Small Swiss Rounds tournament and determine team rankings and then do a double Elimination tourney. Think about what kind of player you are (A,B, or C) so we can draw straws and make fairish teams. We'll take a short brake when the Race starts at 9:15, and hopefully finish around 10:30, or we'll take another brake when the race finishes, and then finish the tournament. I'm not planning on more than 18 people and I think that might be pushing it, but if 30 show up we'll pound it out.

Thanks so much to Velocity, Milwaukee, Chrome, and Eighth Inch for being awesome.

Hey Joey, Keep that polo alive in Las Vegas this year. Messmann Productions really wants to blow up interbike next year with an all bets, court side drinking cage match style next year. I would like to hear how people react to polo down there and how interested they would be to watch 2 nights of bike polo full on tourney games. Wish I could make it down there. I will be sending some polo vibes to ya'll.

how bout if i have a "L.A" Squad? are we not gonna be able to play with my team couse its ramdomly selected?

"We don't need no education"

We can play it by ear. I don't have the impression we're going to get that many fully formed teams coming so I figured it'd be fairer to split people up randomly and see where the dice land, so to speak. If we get a lot of teams that show then we can consider doing that.

I second that!

@Mess= next year we will do it up! Full tilt tourny with strippers and crap shooting in crowds!

Hey, keep track of any contacts that is interested in it. Lets compile a list of the interested to help make this really happen for next year. Hell yes! Wish i could be there.... count it!

Sweet!

Waterford/Fleet Velo is going to be featuring the Joust at their booth. Go by and check it out, or give a word up to my parents. I won't be seeing it until Los Marcos, so stop by the booth and keep it company for me because it misses daddy.

I just hope that my bike doesn't elope with some stripper after a drunken one night stand on the strip.

cheers everyone, I wish i could make it this year.

In my spare time this week I'm going to make a movie featuring the kidnapping of the Fleet Velo by Fixsters wearing candy girl outfits. Think Ocean's 14, George Clooney played by Seabass.

We tried to get Waterford to sponsor us since they'd be in town, and we'd be in town. Alas it wasn't meant to be.

Braxis will let you know if he needs help setting up. I believe most of us will be at the show all day. I will arrive at 5pm and go straight to the spot on thur.

Quin it will be good to play with you again!

I'll bring about three mallets and anyone is welcome to use my bike as long as I'm not playing. Everyone in BZN has had a turn with it anyway. So don't let lack of equipment keep anyone away.

Jerk of all trades.

Unfortunately I won't be there to play, stupid economy forcing me to get a job, but we've still got things set up and my co workers will be in town to make everything happen.

For those that want to help setup
Wednesday am drop off/setup for barriers. If you want to help. you can call K Sakai at 954-seven two nine-7102. He'll be there setting up the courts and the race.

If you want to help brake down
That'll be happening Friday, probably in the AM as well.

Also it looks like Chrome is going to bring the Chrome Van by at some point and give out free beer.

If you have any questions just ask and I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability.

I will be available Thur. at 3pm. Send me your numbers and I will call you so we can ride the strip before we play.

early version of the court approximately 50x100feetx3feet high (my bike is 16.5" mtb with 26" wheels for reference) -- it's in the parking lot of mandalay bay inbetween the 'circle of death' and 2nd to last corner of the crit course. it's available to play right now, but still needs to be worked on a bit. we won't have the lights till tommorow, but the sodium lights in the parking lot are reasonable. if you guys can come out and try it out/give me feedback and any adjustments before tommorow, i'd appreciate it.

you can reach me at 954 729 7102, but please leave a msg as I may not hear my phone ring.

Oh my god! I think a tear just ran down my cheek!
Great Job K!

Ditto...looken good.

Nice! The open door is just so inviting...

How much did that 1-877-329-2203 company charge for the rental and delivery, any idear?

here's a better picture of the background. should have taken it earlier. oh, we got our lights.

thanks for the compliments. barriers were a bit pricey, so i'm gonna lose my shirt, but crazy thing is that it's a hell of alot easier than our french barricades we use at bike races. 'course there's a difference between enclosing a kilometer crit course versus a 100x50ft enclosure.

fucking sweet! nice work, now i wish i was really there. make it happen people! what kind of ball are you using down there???

hey everyone -- i want to thank everyone for coming out and playing. I hope all of you had a good time at this venue. Many of the spectators/industry types I've talked to had never seen polo played out and were completely blown away at how amazing the game is.

i also want to give a big thanks to Jake from Atlanta (Braxis) for getting the ball rolling in making this possible, Chris from Athens for taking care of the day of logistics and being my point man for about a few million tasks, and a half-dozen others that made this possible.

And of course, this wouldn't have happened without the support from companies like Velocity, Eighth Inch, and Chrome among others.

oh, I have a few photos from the exhibition matches, so I'll throw them up in a few days (as soon as I get back to Athens).

(oh, ball we used is the franklin super hi density).

You guys did a great job. I know everything was on short notice, but the courts were fantastic. Chris did a great job running the event and thanks for lending your bike to Dustin and Luke.

The game against LA CHI was a blast. Good to finally play with you Joey and chilling. That Ben on Ben action was a so tight that I think we became one with the wall. Dustin, too bad about the wrist. Thanks to Luke from RVA for stepping in. Top notch night Kim. Nice meet you Phoenix, you guys. The Family team is awesome. Everyone else, pleasure doing battle. Hope to see you soon. Come out to SF for the Halloween Ball Whackers Ball.

Ben

Chris: Another suggestion--ice the balls.

ohhh yall met the fabulous luke from rva. my darlin pie!

that was a great time! hopefully polo can become a regular fixture at Interbike going forward. many thanks to the fellas that organized it all - super awesome job! i too have a few pics and will post a link to them soon.

cheers to all that were there! great polo!

yo ben - awesome to meet you and talk polo logistics. make sure you plan on making it out to calgary in 2010 for our tourney. we can guarantee all that come a great time.

Thanks Chris, and everyone for the great time. It was worth the drive from PHX. Always nice to play polo and drink beer with you guys from different parts of our world. The boy's and I look forward to Midwests. See you there.

Hell yeah. Thanks much to all who put this on and all who participated. Can't wait 'till next year. Hope to see you all in SF for our tournament on Halloween and then in LA for theirs in January.

That was a damn good time! It was good to get a taste of how the rest of the polo world plays- now at least we won't be embarrassed when we venture outside of Montana.

Thanks again for going through all the work in setting this up. I'd love to see the Interbike tourney become an annual thing.

Jerk of all trades.

Jerk of all trades.

Hey sorry it took me so long to get in here. I had SO much fun. Thanks to Gene and K for making such a great court right in the middle of the National Crit Finals. Chris for running the show and not even getting to play until later (What a shot!!).

Joey and Mike - had the best time playing with you. Second ain't bad for a first time team with a rookie! Joey, bringing it from the wings! Mike, you're badass in that goal. Awesome bike control.

Ruckus and SF- x2. That was a great match. And Kim, sorry about almost taking your nose off. I promise to be more careful.

Phoenix - A pleasure to meet (and reacquaint) with you. Fantastic team. See you at Midwests and, hopefully, many other tournaments from here on.

LA - It's more than Joker!!! Nice to finally see the rest of you. Buy strong cranks, y'all.

Lastly, thanks to all the companies at Interbike that have taken interest in the past year, expressed interest for the future, and for taking the time to hang out and talk. Looking forward to seeing some good stuff from you folks.
