Roxy and I may just do that. We'll be going from Atlanta to Nebraska then back to London, don't see why we can't put Madison in there as well...
Reckon there will be a team that could use a third? A fixed loaner available?
When will the rules and format be known?

oh yea, and if paul and zack come, and they play with doug, theres a 250$ bounty on the team that knocks them out of the tourny. same for the reigning north american champions team as well.

Oh come on!

3...2...1...GO!
Mallets Of Mayhem

if you win alexis and take dougs team out (if they show) then you could take 1500$ (us) like 1450 CA $ home. thats how it is. if we have more than 20 team the pot goes up. its a 25 us$ entry per player 20 of which goes to the pot.

bring it bitch

Sweet, bike polo is now an official pro sport!

Nice poster. We'll try to be there. What's the matter, we don't rate a bounty?

the bounties are designed to lure teams like you and jackels team to come and crush the champs, if they dare show themselves

not only are you joyce's true protege, ben, you are also promethean in your foresight. you too montana, at least with respect to the latter attribution.

Before I go ahead and buy Megabus tickets, are these dates concrete?

these dates are concrete

I'll be in Minneapolis over winter break and can easily make the trip. Any East Coasters possibly looking for a 3rd?

Huge Party on the 31st of Dec.

Polo will be on the 2nd and 3rd for the tourney,

Some other activities on the first,

Jonny

Whelp, I do believe that The Bookhouse Boys from Minneapolis will be making our first tournament entry for the New Year's Championships.

We got a ride and a place to stay lined up as of 3pm today.

I know of at least one other team, if not more, that will be coming from Minneapolis.

Fuck yes.

winter holiday for you and you family /lady/boyfriends from the 31 - 10th if you bring them we will take care of them and show you the best fucking time.

I am going to be there. I am going to learn how to steal cars so I can pay for a flight. Or maybe some other East Coasties want to drive?

i'll be there. and i'm probably driving. but i'm probably not driving home. heading west for a few months. or maybe i'll just stop in madison.

Just got green light from "work", will be there 30th dec to 4th jan with appropriate fuel (and maybe some xc skis, Kev...).

fuck yea. jackel you in, what about that fancy ass van that yall roll with.

chicago ben , lucky ducky i know we have our differences but your expected to show. as well as a full representation of the southern midwest and chicago.

milwaukee what you got up your sleeve. how many you gonna bring, you working out. im counting on you guys to take out alexis and his team.

Thanks for the personal invite. Some St Louis kids are already talking about it. It'll come down to money for me, not our differences. If I can only attend one winter tourney this year, it'll be Bike Polo Spring Break. If I can afford two, I'll see y'all in Madison.

Madison is a top notch host city... any idea on a format?

yeah brian- 3 v 3 to 5pts.

no dice nyc...MKE!

you foot goes down and you have to tap out as well, if doug shows up you have to tap him

i was really trying to make this trip work, but i think i'm actually going to be gone by then. i just accepted a new job and they've got me training in San Juan, PR from Dec. 15 through Jan 15!!! it's really crazy that it'll actually require that much time away, but i'm anticipating a relocation to the Southeast(maybe Jacksonville if i'm lucky) after that. so anyway i'd love to, and Doug was actually going to try and get his buddy Lee back from Hawaii for this tourney, kinda reunite since Lee and I played together a while back, but seriously, i wish i could sounds really fun

well ill keep my fingers crossed

i'm wondering what out of towners may want to form up with mke A squad team members. we currently have 4 top notch players(the rest are moving/have moved to NYC/PDX, have messed up knees, or stopped showing up for variious reasons.)

so i'm looking at ottawa, NYC,Philly, RVA, chicago, do any of those cities maybe want to meld with mke top players this tourney?
we havent worked out our teams yet because 4 is an odd number in polo talk.
let me know either on here or privately if you think you have some A level folk who want to join forces with MKE

no dice nyc...MKE!

Phila might need a third. We're almost certainly coming, but Al won't make it. We might also be picking up Chris from NY, but if not, I'd definitely play with MKE. That was supposed to be for Jake, obviously. Stupid computer.

no dice mke . . . NY/PHILLY

ok... thats too bad we coulda been called "the beerbratcheesesteaks"

any other interested folks want to join up with some mke A players and go for a win in the new year!

no dice nyc...MKE!

I might go. I don't have a team.

mke will be moving our thursday game to wed this week becuz of the holiday so we will sort out our team issues, and we could have a spot for you on a part mke team.

Jill- same goes for you i will report back with team possibilities after the holiday

no dice nyc...MKE!

MKE is A-OK with me. i'm a vegan so no pre-game cheese meals for me, but i can score goals sometimes. and make sweet passes. i manage to play defense sometimes, too. sometimes.

if i can get onto a team, i'll go. i want to play.

Get in the wagon, Adam.

I talked to ben schultz yesterday from Chicago and he and i agreed that if either his team or my team wins any award money from the tourney (i know unlikely) that we will throw the money to the team that has the most miles traveled collectively. Milwaukee can i get you on board as well, i'm guessing that the rest of madison teams are up for this? I think there will be financial ability taken into account as well.

I hope this ups the anti for those who might be wavering from coming out west,

jonny

yeah, so I get Paul to fly from San Juan, PR to Madison WI (look that shit up, it's far!) for a couple days and we win if we win, AND/OR we win if you win. sounds good to me.
now i just have to get him to book another flight.

where is this "good indoor facility" the map above has no street markings and i unfortunalty can't tell madison landmarks by birdseye view yet

no dice nyc...MKE!

the map above is a picture of our current kitchen space which will be used for a party or two, we are going to be having the games in one of three or four locations depending on weather. A garage space that is a little small but probably about the same size as the DC courts,

or a gymnasium that might ask for a few decisions by the players to modify their bikes (ie, no rear brakes) but we are probably going to rent a surface that can be used instead.

Third location is a warehouse space on the outside of town that is a good size but away from the center of the town.

Fourth, if weather permits the thunderdome. I think there will be games here no matter what unless the weather is absolutely horrid and we can't play here. Every team will play a game here just because it is the only court that is used for bike polo that is heated and outside.

Here's a striking photo, taken by our beloved Kev, of Crandall at the Thunderdome during the Winter Classic last year. When it wasn't quite "horrid" enough.

This was fun as hell. One of my greatest polo memories.

chicagobikepolo.com

The weather was absolute shit that day, but the tournament was a ton of fun and i think that is why we are going to have some outdoor games no matter what on Jan. 1st, 2nd or 3rd,

jonny

i am really glad we played in the thunderdome on day two (of the nyc in mad). it definitely made the whole event that much more fun and memorable.

nyc

you can remember anything? i guess that head injury wasn't so bad after-all.

nonetheless, i'm still buying a helmet today

nyc

thats great, i was wondering how you would split up the ten dollars between three, its much easier for you each to take a five, instead of trying to figure out how to pay out a 1/3 of a penny (usd) . we promise not to let you down

On january 1st, the blackhawks are hosting the red wings at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Last year's outdoor game between the penguins and the sabres was incredible, crosby even stole a page out of the grass polo book by dribbling the puck through the air. You can enter a ticket lottery here, but i have no idea how much they will end up costing. But at worst, we'll find a big screen to watch it in Madison somewhere.

I've entered the drawing. I'm slowly cultivating a love for the Redwings, can't wait to see this game...

Montana, I'll fight you for Chris. Otherwise, anyone want a solid B player from NYC?

oh ya, and i updated the description of events at the top.

Cheering for the Red Wings from New York is like cheering for the Yankees from Detroit.

TOP CENTER 4-EVA

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

A few comments here so people know about the tourney.

-First, we have plenty of housing, stay as long as you like.
-Second, the dates of the tourney are the 2nd and 3rd. The 1st and the 4th we might have polo and other events but they are not important. If you want to book a ticket that comes in on the 1st and leaves on the 4th you will not miss any of the tournament.
-It is sometimes cheaper to fly into Milwaukee or Chicago. You can work out details with Chicago Bike Polo and Milwaukee Bike Polo about rides. Also, there are cheap buses from both Airports to Madison. If we have enough people who want to fly into Milwaukee we can set up a Pick-up at the airport.
-If you fly into Madison, we will pick you up at any time.
-We might have some catering work to help subsidize your trip.
-We have extra bikes and a shop in madison, if you want you can fix up a bike for the tourney.
-It is sometimes cheaper to ship bikes. If you ship a bike to Madison, i will have it put together for you once you get here and i can ship it back to you for really cheap you will be shocked.

Things are really starting to come together for this tourney. We have lots of players confirmed and even more thinking about it.

i was tryin to be a southerner thinkin of trying this out but sadly seems like its a bit to close to my trip up the east coast and to the families in carolina. but if i stumble upon some monies i would love to do this. even though id feel bad cause i always talked to my friend from there bout coming to visit her but could never pull it together but now that shes gone and polo is in the blood i could pull it off.

anyhow ill know around the first week of december!

hope yall can make it down for the BIKE POLO SPRING BREAK and SESPI!

got my flight!

with menace and doug and cecly and chris, and johnny youall could driven. and with gas at 50cents a quart it would have been a steal

yeah but this way you're stuck with me for a whole week

oh shit

and you get to drive me home

Given the present state of the American economy, and in a effort to reduce year-end overhead expenditures, the staff and management of Total Polo Laboratories are prepared to make room in the Company car for another team (3 players+bikes) of Mid-Atlantic hardcourt bicycle polo players hoping to attend the NYC in Madison tournament. Your contribution to the cost of gas and tolls will afford you all the luxuries a 1990 Ford Taurus station wagon can provide. Although the accomodations will be modest, the price will be unbeatable. All interested parties will be given serious consideration.

What are your dates, Montaner? I'll bring some road cookies and a jug of egg-nog and my mother's best hummel if the dates are right.

I had anticipated leaving on the First, proper early in the AM, but my sudden unemployment gives me unexpected flexibility. Whatever puts the kids in the wagon, let me know.

That sounds pretty good, i could jump on the earliest chinatown bus from here - then i could make some extra cash on new years eve. Could leave earlier for New Years in Madison too if needed though - a stop for some polo in OH or Chicago/MKE? I will be in Madison this week, I'll see what they got planned and advise if getting there early might help us all win some pre-tourney points (maybe short-circuiting the ejector-seat module under Ben Hunter's saddle?). Also, if we need a stop-over on the way, I've got friends and family in Cleveland, Kalamazoo, and Chicago that would be impressed by your beard/hat/pipe and would feed us.

I love the road trip idea much more than the flying. It's way more tiring, but always more of a riot.

Sudden unemployment? What the hell happened?

Meh. Irreconcilable differences. Gives me more time to spend in the Lab. Find me two more and you've got a deal.

also, i will put an offer out there. If anyone can find a van that is for sale, i might be interested in buying it. I am heading to NYC from the 9th to 17th and folks could hitch a ride back. Kind of abstract but would be fun.

so what hes saying is, buy the van out east, and then we buy it when it gets here and then drive you back on jan 9th. montana we have a booming economy here in madison and i have the perfect location for you to set up as midwest bureau for the fed. you could even bring capriotti

We can finally elope to the Midwest like we've always dreamed!

great, ill start looking for apartments

Apartments? Don't they sell houses for like $30 out there?

montana. i might be interested. i'm going for sure, but don't have a team yet. johnnymw, who are you playing with? who is going to this thing? who needs teammates? nyc, i'm looking at you. but i would consider other reasonable offers. i'm from maine, so i don't get cold. ever.

its not going to be cold people ,this isnt the winter classic or anything its the new years champs, nothing could go wrong

I think I am playing with Max and an undetermined third.

Git with Menace or Cupcake and let's get rad, already.

darn right. we need us some mustard for our cheese and bread.

(clearly i'm the cheese)

im looking into how mke will be getting to madison for this. none of us have cars and my mom just got a new one she wont let me drive. today i am looking into rental vans that i could pick up from the airport take to madison friday night then return it there then rent another on sunday to get us back to mke after the tourney idk yet how this will work out but basically this is a long wionded way of saying if you are an outta towner who needs a ride to madison from mke on thursday the 1st LET ME KNOW NOW!

i have chris-nyc so far accounted for. anyone else? please let me know asap

no dice nyc...MKE!

Jake is misleading folks:
The tournament starts Friday Morning Jan. 2nd at 10am, showing up on friday evening will mean you miss lots of games and your team is going to have to deal with 4 forfeits.

Madison will be prepared to pick folks up from the airport and having housing for them between Dec. 30th and Jan. 5th. We can do more if you want to stay for me time or come earlier, but i'm expecting most folks between the 1st and the 4th.

Also, jake, check in on prices on renting a van. If it is expensive them maybe we can set something up where someone from madison goes to MKE on the 1st and picks folks up. I think we will have a van or two we can use.

jonny

i edited my post but it musta been after you replied. my post should have the correct date on it currently. being thursday the 1st, mke caravan leaves for madison.

car rental is about 240$ to rent a minivan(fits 6 people(can squeeze 7) and 6 bikes for the weekend(thurs-sunday) the thing is that once in madison we really dont need the van so im gonna call our business account rep at enterprise and see about getting 2-one way deals. which may or may not be cheaper. i'll report back

if you guys have vans though gas is soooo cheap that would make sense too if we just tip the drivers for their time.

no dice nyc...MKE!

Can one take bikes on greyhound? maybe just pile them into the luggage area?

http://www.greyhound.com/scripts/fs/NEWgetfare.cgi?origin=MILWAUKEE+WI&d...

A nother option might be the Badger Bus (badgerbus.com)
Looks to be similar price, and may or may not have more options/trips in any given day etc etc.

it would be hell riding your polo bike from the airport to the badger bus station (is there an airport pickup spot?)

also would have to check on their bike policy which seems to be left up to the driver

no dice nyc...MKE!

the badger bus leaves from the aiport regularly. http://www.badgerbusonline.com/ticketing/BasicSchedule.aspx (Mitchell Airport to Madison Memorial Union)

2. How much per person or team? Who do we talk to for registration?

Ben says at the beginning of the thread that it's $25 per person, 20 of that goes in the pot. Dougie already asked my for the $20 up front and I think I will try to get it to him at The Pit next Sunday.

Sounds like you've got a tight schedule you gotta work the polo around, aquaman.

Not so much a tight schedule. I'm just super excited about playing some polo in the frozen tundra.

Holy shit. I don't check the website for a few weeks and there's 80 something new posts up? So like... is this thing happening or what? I may be interested in checking it out. I've been hearing quite a bit about this "bicycle polo" thing recently.

Okay, a few notes on the tourney,

If you can please install a yellow or light colored tire on your bike. This will make our life much easier at the tourney. Especially if you run a rear brake or a fixed gear.

If your pedals or bike has jagged edges please install new pedals or try to blunt the edges. This is an imperative as we don't want to destroy the playing surfaces. If you have been thinking about buying plastic pedals, this is a good time to make the move. If you have something that your are worried about please email me.

Thanks,

jonny

i have a black tire with yellow writing on it. is that good enough?

i heard Pieter is bringing his frisbee.

and leaving with another black eye!

140x65

actually, i heard he's got a new visor with a face-guard.

surprisingly, the visor has prevented all sorts of facial mallet hits, including a couple in ottawa when i played with the broken nose. never play frisbee at night with drug dealers.

the new visor does neigh have a face guard, but has given him a pretty new nickname...

TOP CENTER 4-EVA

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

oh whats the name. i didnt notice him with a facegaurd today. so informal results comming out the round robin, new york paul sack and co are top of braket b with no losses. and same for hero squad but in the a bracket. mad a follows nyc with chicago barely behind. mad b cosisting of jill with two ribs borken by angelo's bike, jon atwell, and lief are second in braket b with philly and menace's team tied for thirdish.

exellents hows by columbia and the drew sqaud, bird and the single ladies, as well as the ugly twin of the twin cities. ok love all yall peace out and gnight. oh and by the way it seems like montana is going to drop this whole fed thing. something about needing to drink beer while the rest of us scrubed the floors. fine with me

Thanks for the update, Ben. Keep up the good work. I hope Jill heals quickly.

Results day 1: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pSqpbYqQylkfXvBn1TlrrYA

Okay, i wanted to post a full update on the tourney,

First, thanks to everyone in Mad Bike Polo for making this happen, we really wanted to present madison in a good light and i was so stocked by having a successful tournament. I can't say enough thank yous to Max and Jon Atwell for building the courts and hauling shit around all weekend, major props. Also, birdie did an amazing job with the posters and picking up a folks in Milwaukee on friday. I would post the rest of people who helped but it would take up the rest of this post and most folks would get bored, but thank you to the rest of the folks, your work is not forgotten.

Thursday - Jan. 1st Pick up at the Goodman Community Center. We tried to do some knockout rounds but people got pissed after kremin, johnny midwest and i kept beating folks, but hey we still won five bucks. We got a little bit of what gives with the floor spending about an hour scrubbing the floor clean.

Friday - Jan 2nd Round Robins indoors, started at around 11.30 am and played until about 10pm, we broke everyone into two groups and group A played their games in the morning and Group B played their games in the afternoon. This worked really well as there was less sitting around and everyone got to play a game ever 40 minutes or so. Each team played between 7 and 8 games, we could have easily handled more teams and made it work. Also, we used a laptop and a projector to keep stats and the schedule on cue. Was really nice for teams to know when their games where and who was up next. I loved the scoreboard, you always knew the time and the score. Maybe a mobile scoreboard would be nice for tourneys. I want to thank everyone who stayed behind and scrubbed floors, it was huge, i was really touched by the amount of people who worked so hard to make sure that everything was clean.

Saturday - Jan. 3rd Ben and i decided at the last minute to hold games outside at the thunderdome on saturday. The weather was going to be in the high 20s and it made sense to have two courts. We started games around noon and finished at 5pm. It was great, i loved the courts and the setting of the thunderdome was so nice. Even the freezing rain that started coming down near the finals felt like it added to the feel. Here is a break down of the standings.
Finals
MKE vs PHI = 5-4
Semi Finals
PHI vs NYC = 5-3
Quarter Finals
MAD VS NYC = 3-4

1st Jake, Joe and Kremin MKE
2nd Mark, Chris (NYC) and Montana Philly
3rd Doug, Zach and Paul (NYC)
4th Ben, Jonny and Kev (MAD)
5th Cecily, Jon A and Leif (MAD) EDIT: This was originally Jill's team, but she was replaced on day 2 by Cecily after busting two ribs during the final play of their victory over Pieter/Angelo/Adam
6th Pieter, Angelo and Adam (East Van, Ottawa, NYC)
7th Max, Johnny Midwest, Jamie Koy (MAD, NYC, MAD)

Individual Stats
Goals = Jon Atwell 15 goals
Blocks = Ben Hunter 10 blocks

Tournament MVP
Jake Newborn

Sorry, if i can't remember any more, it is a bit complicated from that point on.

Okay, a few points i wanted to make. All tournaments in madison and hopefully in the midwest will be mandatory helmets. While i have seen other injuries happen more often nothing is as scary as seeing someone hit their head. I can understand the argument about not wearing a helmet when folks ride their bikes around town, but when you are playing a sport like bike polo, it makes so much sense.

We have to figure a way to keep collisions down, i don't know how that looks yet but there are a lot of ideas out there that might work. Lets experiment with a few things.

you forgot one stat
eighth finals? MKE vs MAD 5-3

and to fill in folks from not the midwest...That was the first time mke's A team has beaten mad's A team in a match. we did win one chukkar in the 3rd BAMWBPC but they won the best 2 of 3. Just sayin...

Also Im really happy for the sake of the tourney that we won the finals game in one match and not 2 because loss of light was a serious issue. the last 4 minutes of the final game the ball was nearly impossible to see unless it was right below you.

www.mkebikepolo.com

We looked into buying/building/renting a scoreboard for the Midwests. It's very expensive by current tournament-throwing standards. But perhaps in the future...

The fed should buy us a scoreboard
www.mkebikepolo.com

If all the clubs in the states and Canada chipped in a few bux, we could get a countdown and home/away scoreboard. The problem would be shipping it all over the continent to all the tourneys. Administrating that would be the pain in the ass. Most clubs would never see the thing in their hometown.

Thanks for everything Jonny. The use of the scoreboard and projecting the upcoming games for round robin were true innovations, and I personally hope they catch on. That was by far the best round robin organization that I have seen. As far as requiring helmets goes, I think that is a good move as well.

agreed. i loved the scoreboard while playing of course but it also made games more exciting to watch.

Thanks for the edit re: final standings, Jonny.

Awesome. I wish I could have been there. Props to MKE and Philly. Joe-Jake-Kremin--On Wisconsin.

Oh, and haha to Menace, Angelo and Pieter ...

5th Cecily, Jon A and Leif (MAD)
6th Pieter, Angelo and Adam (East Van, Ottawa, NYC)

MALICE for the people.

I seem to have been written out of history thanks to getting my ribs crushed. Cecily did a nice job filling in for me on day 2, but the team that finished in 5th place was, for the first half of the tourney, Jon, Leif, and I. I think we did a nice job of spanking the All Stars and standing up to Philly.

--Jill

you stood me up and put me down multiple times in that game, jill. i always love playing with and against you. you will never be forgotten or erased.

nyc

yup, your memory is in tip top shape. it must be jonny who has mush for brains.

that game you guys played against philly in the round robin was one of the most exciting of the tournament to watch. it was a good game to watch all the way through because you guys we the underdogs and fought so hard.. but jill's breakaway goal to tie philly 4-4 in the last 15 seconds was amazing. everyone jumped out of their seats and went nuts

- Beaver Boys * Milwaukee Bike Polo Club -

THAT GAME WAS AWESOME! i was rooting so hard i lost my voice, or at least that didn't help me keep it
